Advances in pharmacotherapy and psychosocial interventions continue to improve the success of managing schizophrenia. Early detection and intervention in people with, or at risk for, psychosis give patients and their families hope for a better course of illness and an improved outcome. The interdisciplinary approach, combining pharmacotherapy and psychosocial interventions, markedly increases the chance of long-lasting remission and recovery. However, a cure for schizophrenia has yet to be found. Research, particularly in the past decade, has revealed some of the biological and genetic facets of the origins of schizophrenia, and this has contributed to the better quality of treatment. This book aims to provide a short but detailed overview of current standards of care in schizophrenia. It takes into consideration several treatment recommendations proposed in published guidelines for schizophrenia, including the guidelines by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (2009), the American Psychiatric Association (2004), the Canadian Psychiatric Association (2005), and the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (2005). A major problem with guidelines such as these is the difficulties encountered in translating them into daily clinical practice. Therefore, the fundamental aim of this book is to present the guidelines as clearly as possible in the context of relevant clinical treatment issues. The book does this with the help of figures that provide the clinician with algorithms and summaries of the most important information required for the practical treatment and theoretical understanding of schizophrenia.

This mini-encyclopedia aims to provide a survey of the wide range of interventions available for treating schizophrenia at a level appropriate for non-specialists who are beginning their engagement in the area and for others as a source of reference for the specialist. The pharmacological options are considered alongside psychosocial management approaches and the advantages and disadvantages of each treatment modality are outlined. The entries are written by leading experts, including basic and clinical scientists in academia and industry, and include descriptions of many relevant fundamental psychological and biological processes of the disorder. The volume owes much to the Encyclopedia of Psychopharmacology edited by Ian Stolerman IP (published by Springer-Verlag in 2010), from which some entries are reproduced. Where entries deal with pharmacological interventions, the aim is to provide detailed information on the neuropsychopharmacology of the substances from domains such as clinical, experimental, and molecular pharmacology, insofar as they impact upon understanding of schizophrenia. Articles on non-drug interventions review the most recent evidence base related to commonly applied psychotherapeutic and rehabilitative measures. Other essays focus upon the key concepts and research methods used in the field, describing the main features of investigative techniques and outlining their roles, the types of information obtained and why they are needed; the advantages and limitations of a technique may also be summarized. The essays are complemented by many short definitions of important terms; in the interest of ease of reading, these definitions are not assigned to named authors; they are typically related to specific essays that they cross-reference and relevant authorship details can be found in the latter.

Second only to the common cold, pain is the most common reason for health care visits. It results in significant personal and social costs to individuals, and economic costs to society. Chronic pain has been estimated to cost more than 100 billion annually in the United States, and its estimated annual cost to European countries ranges from 1.1 to nearly 50 billion Euros (nearly 1.5 billion to over 60 billion dollars). In order to treat pain, clinicians need to be able to assess pain and its effects on functioning. However, 100s, if not 1000s, of different measures of pain and pain-related domains exist. Surprisingly, despite the fact that much is known about the psychometrics strengths and weaknesses of existing measures, there does not yet exist a simple pain assessment guide that describes the most useful and psychometrically sound pain measures for health care providers. This book fills this need.

Handbook of Non-Motor Symptoms in Parkinson’s Disease is designed to provide practical tips and emphasize key priorities for treatment of non-motor aspects of the disorder. Low back pain is described as a very common condition that tends to affect about 70% of the population at some point in time with varying degrees of symptom severity. Although definitions vary, sciatic pain is generally defined as back-related pain radiating to the leg (normally below the knee and into the foot and toes) and is one of the commonest variations of low back pain. Patients with sciatica typically experience a more persistent and severe type of pain, a less favorable outcome, consume more healthcare resources and have more prolonged disability and absence from work than those with low back pain alone. Managing Sciatica and Radiculopathies in Primary Care Practice provides a comprehensive, up-to-date overview of the subject and key information for primary care practitioners about low back pain in patients, including definitions and causes, current management approaches, diagnostic and treatment algorithms, as well as clinical practice guidelines.

This handbook discusses developments and the future of gout treatment, which looks promising. Gout has been a well-known disease for over 2000 years, and is the most common cause of joint inflammation in adult males. It has become apparent that no therapeutic target based on hyperuricemia outcome had been defined. Very few controlled trials were available to test the efficacy and safety of treatments, and no research on diagnosis and management had been done despite data showing that patients with gout were generally improperly treated even in the hands of specialists. In the last 10 years, good-quality evidence on gout impact and management has grown exponentially, renal transporters have been recently identified, and a number of new drugs have been approved or are under current development.

This concise, fully illustrated handbook is the ideal resource for busy medical professionals and trainees with an interest in best-practice, evidence-based approaches to the management of insomnia and related sleep disorders

Cancer-related fatigue (CrF) is increasingly recognized as a significant problem for patients with cancer at all stages, including those undergoing therapy and in remission. In fact, studies have shown that CrF causes patients more distress than pain, nausea, or vomiting and yet fatigue is still often undertreated and rarely studied. However, several new treatments such as are being investigated to determine the most effective ways to manage this debilitating symptom and improve patient quality of life. Cancer-Related Fatigue will provide a concise overview of this condition, with an evidence-based discussion of diagnosis, treatment, and long-term management.

Depression is a common mood disorder that affects approximately 10% of the global population at some point in their lives and can cause serious psychological, physical, and cognitive distress. Additionally, patients with depression are at a greater risk for cardiovascular disease, stroke, functional impairment, disability and all-cause mortality. Aside from the impact on the individual, this condition presents a very real economic burden, as depression is the most predominant mental health problem among working-age patients and the leading cause of lost work productivity. Despite advances in screening and treating depression in recent decades, a vast majority of patients with depression do not actively seek treatment and, of those that do, only a quarter have been found to receive adequate and effective interventions. Handbook of Depression, Second Edition is a concise review of assessment tools, available and emerging pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatment options, and consensus management guidelines that center on enhancing the clinician-patient relationship and improving patient quality of life. Cowritten by expert US- and UK-based authors, this handbook has an innovative global focus that consolidates current knowledge in a convenient, pocket-sized guide that is ideal for every day reference in a clinical setting.

This Guide assesses the key clinimetric attributes in the assessment of Parkinson's Disease (PD), with the intention to offer rapid and pragmatic information on the most relevant scales used in PD. Parkinson’s disease affects approximately 4 million people globally and is most commonly seen in people over the age of 50. The disease is a progressive disorder of the nervous system, and presents a number of movement and cognitive symptoms, thereby greatly affecting a patients quality of life. The use of scales for assessment in neurological disorders such as PD arises from the need to quantify disorders and states (such constructs as disability, symptoms, quality of life). Assessment scales are often categorised into two categories: generic (i.e. those scales usable in any health condition), and specific (i.e. scales developed for exclusive use in PD). They can have a variety of components: single-item and multi-item or composite scale; unidimensional and multidimensional; and as disease-centered and patient-centered measures. The creation and validation of scales is complex, with scales undergoing numerous studies to assess criteria such as acceptability, reliability, and responsiveness. In the process of validation of a scale the following attributes should be tested to ascertain whether a scale is an effective instrument of measurement.

Atlas of Rheumatoid Arthritis is a high-quality educational initiative, written by leaders in the field of rheumatology, containing a collection of approximately 150 relevant images, with extended descriptive captions and a comprehensive bibliography. The Atlas of Rheumatoid Arthritis will provide clinicians with a visual guide to rheumatoid arthritis, focusing on assessment, diagnosis and treatment, including newer research into the signalling pathways involved in the pathogenesis of RA, before focusing on the treatment of RA. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is the most common and most serious of the inflammatory arthritic disorders, and it dominates clinical rheumatological practice. Effective, early treatment is vital as this can slow the course of the disease and reduce joint damage. RA is usually treated using disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs), most commonly methotrexate. The newest treatments target the disease-causing immune elements specifically and directly.

Breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer and the leading cause of cancer death in women worldwide, accounting for nearly a quarter of the total new cancer cases each year.  Of these cases, approximately  15–25% overexpress HER2, a transmembrane RTK kinase that is associated with aggressive tumor growth and poor outcomes.  However, in the past decade, survival rates of patients with HER-positive breast cancer have significantly improved due to increased screening, HER2 testing, and breakthrough HER2-targeted drug therapies.Handbook of HER2-Targeted Agents in Breast Cancer  provides oncologists, primary care physicians, trainees and other healthcare providers with a concise, accessible, and up-to-date survey of the field, including a review of our current understanding of the biology of the HER2 pathway and the rationale for targeting it in early-stage and advanced breast cancer, an overview of HER2-testing, and evidence-based discussions of available HER2-targeted regimens in the adjuvant and metastatic settings.

For over 30 years, the stepped care approach has been used in the management and treatment of hypertension. This approach advocates the use of initial monotherapy to reach the desired blood pressure, and the subsequent use of additional drugs with complementary modes of action, until the target BP is achieved. However, current control rates for hypertension suggest that such an approach may be outdated and no longer effective in the management of hypertension. Clinical trials have shown that more than 50% of patients require a combination of drug therapies to achieve their target BP. Some proponents of combination therapy have argued that the risk of adverse side effects and non-compliance will be lower than that compared to monotherapy, which initially requires higher doses to be administered to be effective. Consequently, there have been increasing calls of the necessity for a much more combined approach in the treatment of hypertension. Adding to this, Combination Therapy in Hypertension will cover current control rates of blood pressure worldwide, the benefits of monotherapy and combination therapy, examine the effectiveness, risk of adverse effects, compliance, and cost of the available therapies and will also include information on relevant outcome studies.
