The present work is a study on the formation of the Shih-ching. The author poses the hypothesis that this collection of poems, as the standard music and literature passed down to later generations, initially incorporated different cultural heritages through a process which moved from ritualization to secularization, as well as standardization to localization.
In aiming to find the origins of the division of the Shih-ching into sections and subsections and their titles, as "Nan," "Feng," "Ya," and "Sung," the author employs an interdisciplinary methodology, combining ethno-musicological methods with paleography, philology, and archaeology. He draws on new archaeological data of the past two decades that has shed new light on the Shih-ching.

The papers in this volume go back to a conference held September 14-15, 2002, at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, B.C., in honour of Prof. Daniel L. Overmyer on his retirement. The contributions pay tribute to this renowned scholar of Chinese religious traditions, whose work is a constant reminder to look beyond text to context, beyond idea to practice, to study religion as it was and is lived by real people rather than as an abstract system of ideas and doctrines.

The present study on ancient Chinese philosophy invites us to meet a challenging task in philosophical understanding. The so-called "School of Names" (mingjia 名家) is a label for a diverse group of thinkers in the Warring States period (479–221 B.C.) that has sometimes been accused of dabbling in flippant linguistic and conceptual puzzles, paradoxes, or sophistries. Bernard Solomon analyzes the works of its two main representatives, namely Huizi 惠子 (Master Hui, or Hui Shi 惠施, 380–305 B.C.?) and Gongsun Long 公孫龍 (b. 380 B.C.?).
The Chapter One deals with the ten "paradoxes" of Huizi as recorded in the Zhuangzi 莊子. Chapters Two to Six are devoted to five texts attributed to Gongsun Long that have been called cryptic or even a mixture of banality and nonsense. Among them is also found the "White-Horse Dialogue" with its famous dictum "A white horse is not a horse." The aim of Solomon’s investigation is the discovery of the rules of "language games" in the School of Names and of the key to solve their linguistic and conceptual puzzles and paradoxes. His analysis shows in all the texts he interprets an "evidence of an interest in language qua language" (p. 12), which is unique for Chinese thought in the classical era.
Bernard S. Solomon holds a Ph.D. in Far Eastern Languages of Harvard University (1952) and was a long-time Professor of Chinese in the Department of Classical and Oriental Languages at Queens College, City University of New York (CUNY).

Proceedings of the International and Interdisciplinary Symposium at the Art and Exhibition Hall of the Federal Republic of Germany, Bonn, May 10-12, 2012. This volume consists of selected papers from a cross-disciplinary symposium, held by the Ostasien-Institut (OAI, East Asia Research Institute) as part of the project "Europe meets China - China meets Europe." It presents studies on the early encounters between two highly heterogeneous groups, European missionaries and Chinese literati, employing a cultural-psychological framework. Based on research in primary sources, the contributions elaborate on the cultural conditions and psychological interactions which influenced these encounters, thus providing new insights into the history of the Jesuit mission in China.

Christianity was initially a “foreign religion” in China, nevertheless it took roots over the course of several centuries through the process of evangelisation, negotiation, conversion, and contextualization. Therefore, it constitutes a rather complex cultural phenomenon in China. It has been, and still is, viewed from several perspectives and embedded into various, sometimes mutually exclusive, master narratives of Chinese history, e.g., Cultural exchanges between China and the West, Imperialism in China, Modernisation of China and Chinese religious history. Each of these narratives entails a different evaluation of the history of Christianity in China. As this study in German points out, changes in this field of research are an apt indicator for shifts in the conception of national and cultural identity/alterity in Mainland China. They also reflect different perceptions of the relationship between Christianity/Christian groups and Chinese culture/non-Christian population as well as between China and the West.
Based on an analysis of discourses on the historiography of Christianity in China, the author demonstrates the interplay of historical research with Mainland Chinese debates on meta-topics such as paths of modernisations and identity. The focus of this research is on the contributions of Liang Qichao (1873–1929), Hu Shi (1891–1962), and Chen Yuans (1880–1971) for the early 20th century. For the late 20th and 21st century relevant articles from the leading historical journals Jindaishi yanjiu (Modern Chinese History Studies), Lishi yanjiu (Historical Reserarch) and Zhongguoshi yanjiu (Studies in Chinese History) are discussed. In the evaluation of these articles a special emphasis is put on the influence of the historian Zhang Kaiyuan as a pioneer of a new research perspective.
