Between 1993 and 2006, Robin Gillanders made photographs of Ian Hamilton Finlay’s garden, ‘Little Sparta’ at Stonypath near Biggar in South Lanarkshire, Scotland.Throughout that period, he also collaborated with Finlay on several of his artist’s books, posters, and cards, and they gradually became close friends, up until Finlay’s death in 2006.As a Concrete Poet, Finlay is widely recognised as one of the most significant artists in the UK in the mid to late 20th Century, while art historian Sir Roy Strong has said of Little Sparta that it is "the only really original garden made in this country since 1945".

The formation and impact of the landmark exhibition Strategy: Get Arts, staged at Edinburgh College of Art as part of the Edinburgh Festival in 1970Watch Brian Cox and Sir Nicholas Serota discuss Strategy: Get Arts and Richard Demarco in an excerpt from RICO (The Richard Demarco Story) (2021), directed by Dr Marco J. FedericiAuthored and guest edited by Dr Christian Weikop, a renowned specialist on modern and contemporary German art.Includes work from Joseph Beuys, Gerhard Richter, Blinky Palermo, Klaus Rinke, Stefan Wewerka, Günther Uecker and many more.Based on archival research at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art (SNGMA).Featuring guest contributions by academics and curators, including individuals directly involved with Strategy: Get Arts in 1970.Incorporating numerous arresting ‘event photographs’ of the exhibition, taken by George Oliver, Monika Baumgartl, and Richard Demarco, many never seen before and published here for the first time.Based on close archival research, Christian Weikop uncovers unknown and exciting narratives, as well as artist networks, concerning this provocative 1970 exhibition, held at ECA. The author has previously considered the British press reception of SGA in an article for Tate Papers, but this Studies in Photography-EUP book publication goes far beyond that article and any other scholarship on the exhibition by taking into account the contributions of all 35 artists based in Düsseldorf, and incorporating testimony of individuals who were involved in this landmark exhibition, or who were later engaged in archive exhibitions or recreation projects. Weikop explores the formation of the exhibition in the context of a late 1960s culture of protests and occupations, and demonstrates that SGA was a pivotal ‘Shock of the New’ moment that would leave its mark on art education. You can find out more about Strategy Get Arts at the ECA here

A thought-provoking combination of visually powerful imagery and comment*Includes 260 stunning photographs by more than 50 international contributors*Keynote essay by Patricia Macdonald*Features an interview with Dan Bailey and George Monbiot*Includes essays by Robert Macfarlane, Owen Logan, Kate Brown, Siobhan Lyons, Andrew Simms, Natasha Myers, Ayelen Liberona, Jared Diamond, Leslie Hook, Adam NicolsonSurveying the Anthropocene presents a range of approaches to image-making concerning the environment by some of the best artist-photographers working worldwide, alongside texts by some of the most illuminating writers on environmental questions, at a pivotal moment in the human relationship with the planet.Photographic approaches to environmental imagery have altered fundamentally in recent decades, largely as a result of increasing socio-ecological awareness. This insightful international survey, with a strong representation from Scotland, considers the varied range of current working practices of a representative selection of artist-photographers, both renowned and emerging, whose image-making explores human-caused environmental change. It concentrates particularly on work which relates to the types of impact, on climate and the web of life, that are sufficiently significant and globally widespread to appear in the future record of the rocks as a new geological epoch - the Anthropocene. The concept of the Anthropocene has engaged the attention and imagination of a wide range of commentators from very different backgrounds and walks of life. It therefore provides an excellent context in which to discuss, in an open and cross-disciplinary way, the range of responses of artist-photographers and cultural writers to our present global situation of multiple, interconnected environmental and social crises - and the options for human ingenuity in addressing these.Contributing photographersJack Aeby, Antoine d'Agata, Benoit Aquin, Mandy Barker, Olaf Otto Becker, Daniel Beltra , Alex Boyd, Marilyn Bridges, Alicia Bruce, David Buckland, Edward Burtynsky, Anne Campbell, Thomas Joshua Cooper, Cortis & Sonderegger, Dalziel + Scullion, Pedro David de Oliveira Castello Branco, Bryan Debus, Susan Derges, Terry Evans, Tim Flach, Hamish Fulton, Sophie Gerrard, Lorne Gill, Emmet Gowin, Alexander Hamilton, J.J.
