Grandma cobra has lost her tooth, and she is furious because she can t find it. To make it worse, it is a moonless night and the jungle is pitch dark. Maybe that slimy frog Mandu has stolen it thinking that it's a treasure. And Kumi, a little adivasi girl, is out there in the dense forest looking for the chataka bird. But why? Because the fields of her village are parched, and the chataka is the messenger of rain, for it is known to ride on the monsoon winds. The Toothless Cobra takes the readers into the heart of the wild and reveals its mysterious creatures in all their majesty, all their moods. Its charming illustrations bring the animals to life and capture them in action in their natural habitat. This collection of short stories promotes the idea of positive human animal interactions and encourages young readers to love and care for animals.

TERI Energy & Environment Data Diary and Yearbook (TEDDY) is an annual publication brought out by The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) since 1986. It is the only comprehensive energy and environment yearbook in India that provides updated information on the energy supply sectors (coal and lignite, petroleum and natural gas, power, and renewable energy sources), energy demand sectors (agriculture, industry, transport, household), and local and global environment sectors (environment and climate change). The publication also provides a review of the government policies that have implications for the sectors of the Indian economy.

As extreme weather events – the heat wave in Delhi in May 2022 and the unusually heavy rains in September 2022 – become more frequent, fulfilling the predictions of climate change experts, reducing the emissions of greenhouse gases that drive the climate change becomes increasingly urgent. Next to coal-fired power stations and the industrial sector, it is transport that accounts for a major share in these emissions, which makes Clean Transport in India a particularly timely publication. The book not only presents all the relevant statistics but, more important, explains the implications of those numbers and the interconnections between different facets of transport: for example, the greater number of vehicles on roads may seem to favour mobility but in fact makes roads more congested—and the congestion makes air pollution more severe, thereby aggravating its impact on health.

Would you like to reduce your monthly electricity bill? Help reduce power outages in your neighbourhood? Improve air quality in your city? And all while making a measurable impact in slowing global warming and climate change? If you answered ‘Yes’ to any of these questions, this book is for you. That said, if you are looking to buy or replace electrical appliances for your home, this book also outlines the factors and features to consider, including energy efficiency labels, to maximize usage while minimizing electricity consumption.

Have you noticed how quickly advertisements of immunity boosters have mushroomed recently? Turmeric latte, tulsi, amla, ginger, . . . the list goes on. Whether such supplements really work or whether the effect is purely psychological is a different matter—but Nutraceuticals in Human Health goes a long way in helping you to make sense of what nutraceuticals are, to examine the oft exaggerated claims of their benefits, and to separate marketing gimmicks from truth. Whereas marked changes in the lifestyles of Indians, particularly those living in cities, have greatly increased the incidence of such lifestyle-related disorders as diabetes and hypertension and in diseases of the heart, the covid-19 pandemic has made people greatly conscious of their health and well-being. That consciousness has also fuelled the demand for ‘nutraceuticals’, a term that the Oxford dictionary offers as a synonym for ‘functional food’, defining it simply as “a food containing health-giving additives.” However, there is much more to nutraceuticals than that.

India has displayed climate leadership. It has decided to become net zero by 2070. The transformative journey to net zero would, naturally, present formidable challenges. Rising Ambition describes how with smart policies India has been achieving remarkable success with renewables. This success has been generating greater confidence and higher ambition. In a forward-looking move India has embarked on a Green Hydrogen Mission. The book sets out the contours of the pathways to net zero with key milestones. It analyses policy choices at critical inflection points of the energy transition. It suggests ways to minimize the cost of the transition and to achieve early success. It makes the case that this investment in moving away from fossil fuels would help India become a developed country with a green competitive economy. The book comprehensively analyses policy choices across all sectors for India to become net zero. It explains complex issues with clarity in simple language. It is written for the layperson as well as for the experts—a must read for all those concerned about climate change Key Features: Explains India’s net zero commitment and its implications with clarity and depth.

Coal: phase down or phase out brings together salient facts and figures about coal in India and the world to give the reader an overview of the trends in reserves, production, prices, and utilization of coal. More than that, the book highlights the major problems – particularly those related to the environment – that confront the coal sector and not only traces the evolution of relevant policies in India from the nationalization of the sector and the re-entry of the private sector but also explains the forces that shaped those policies. The book attempts to meet the objectives of the ’Concerned Citizen’ series by putting across these different facets of the coal industry simply, clearly, and concisely. Where necessary, some technical terms and concepts are explained so that a lay person can understand them easily. Contents: What is coal? How to measure coal quality and quantity? Uses of coal: electricity generation, cooking, etc. Environmental issues in mining coal: impact on forests, air and water Safety issues in coal mining Environmental issues related to the use of coal Mitigating the environmental impact of coal Social impacts of coal mining Using coal at pit head or at load centres:

The environment is defined, perceived, and valued diversely by different countries, cultures, and communities. A healthy environment ensures human security, which means everyone has the access to food and water, employment and livelihood stability, resilience to climate change and extreme weather events, and also social and political stability. As the demand for food, fodder, fuel, and raw material grows, it increases the pressure on the environment and the competition for natural resources. Both human and natural activities have caused the physical, chemical, and biological degradation of the environment. The Environment covers the basic components of environment, ecology, biomes, and biodiversity. The book gives an analytical understanding of the topics. While the book covers major international topics, it has a strong focus on India too. The book will help candidates appearing for competitive examinations such as civil services. It is also extremely useful for readers interested in environment science, environment chemistry, and related subjects.
