The Incredible Years – förlag

Approximately 2/3 of all children referred to mental health agencies are labelled as having Oppositional Defiant Disorder, Conduct Disorder, or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. These children are at increased risk for poor outcomes including academic failure, deviant peer groups, drug use, violence, and delinquency. Identifying and treating these children as early as possible offers promise for strengthening child protective factors such as social, emotional, and academic competence and effective parenting, thereby preventing and reducing the development of conduct problems and other secondary risk factors. The book has two elements -- first it allows parents to tell their stories: sharing what it is like to have a "problem" child as well as the long and painful route to finding support and recovery through parent and child training. The book also elucidates in detail the "collaborative process" of therapists working together with families. This process combines the knowledge and expertise of the clinician with the unique strengths, perspectives, culture and goals of parents. Essentially the goal is to empower parents by making them active partners in the therapy process, teaching them parenting strategies to cope effectively with their child and strengthen their relationship as well as build support networks. The book uses case examples to illustrate these points and provides examples of how to tailor the parent programs for high-risk populations and multicultural families. Examples of when and how to add adjunct therapies such as child and teacher training are also discussed, providing a comprehensive guide for the collaborative process for therapists using the Incredible Years® programs.

All children misbehave sometimes! Some children are temperamentally more difficult to parent because they are impulsive, hyperactive, inattentive, or delayed in some aspect of their development. This invaluable handbook uses the Incredible Years® Parenting Pyramid® as the architectural or construction plan for specific parenting tools that help prevent behaviour problems from occurring and promote children's social, emotional, and academic competence, and healthy lifestyles. The book helps parents to build a strong positive relationship foundation before using respectful discipline tools to reduce target behaviour problems. The book also focuses on tools for building family relationships and support networks as well as problem solving methods and self-regulation skills to manage stress.

This book provides parents and teachers of children on the autism spectrum (aged 2-5 years) with strategies for promoting childrens optimal social, emotional, language, and academic competence. It includes verbal and nonverbal strategies to help caregivers to enter in childrens attention spotlight and expand their interest and joy in relationships with others. The book includes sample adult-child social and emotion coaching scripts for interacting with children and suggestions for modelling, initiating, and prompting social behaviours and joint activities. Also included are other connection and communication strategies such as sensory games, visual prompts and pictures, gestures, pretend and puppet play, and intentional communication. Through repeated, sensitive and responsive interactions, parents and teachers can learn to enter the child's attention spotlight and to jointly share experiences that bring the child interest and joy. This results in a strong interpersonal connection and gradually leads to the child's desire and ability to communicate and share emotions and experiences with others. This child-focused and developmentally based way of communicating and teaching leads to a stronger relationship, more emotional connection, more emotion regulation, and less frustration for parents, teachers, and the child!
