The numerous items of everyday material culture that we employ in housework, cleaning, office work and entertainment are more than mere disposable objects. In a sense, they represent one of the ways for us to understand the idiosyncratic lifestyles and traditions of various places and peoples. A great number of these household items and daily necessities come from the handiwork of anonymous craftsmen, who have learned their skills through family inheritance or apprenticeship. This book presents 120 selected items of everyday use, currently available in Shanghai in one way or another. Alongside photographs and illustrations, the book also includes interviews with craftsmen living in Shanghai, who specialise in bamboo, wood, straw, iron, and cloth, to portray and share the endeavors of craftsmen as a whole, as well as the intimate details of their lives in Shanghai. Hopefully, this book will help to introduce the ideas of environmental friendliness and resource preservation to readers looking for novel concepts, and to people who care about the development of Shanghai.Text in English and Chinese.

The essence of design is "wisdom creates value", and the current market design needs are showing a diversified trend. The design has a technical and comprehensive aspect; there are also personalised, differentiated needs. W&R has been trying to consolidate the foundation of how to balance design services through talent cultivation and reserves. Compared with scale and integration, it is more urgent to guide and cultivate talent and teams with high-quality design senses and special capabilities to reinforce W&R's future competitive advantage, and continuous, steady development. The establishment of One Studio was an important part to W&R's development, as it provided an opportunity to form a pioneering team of creative and energetic designers, and created space for the ongoing development of young designers who dare to do things.Architectural design itself is a discipline and profession that is closely linked with formal beauty. The effect of achievement itself is an important aspect that reflects the level of designers. The best team is incomparably focusing on details, such as the delicacy of diagram paper, logic, the quality of sample reels, and so on. This book is a portfolio of One Studio's architectural design cases, presented through high quality photographs and insightful texts.Text in English and Chinese.

László Hudec (László Edvard Hudec, or Ladislaus Edward Hudec) can only be described as a legend. As one of the foreign architects who fled his native country of Austria-Hungary during troubled times, he ended up making his mark on more than 50 projects, including over 100 buildings during his 29-year (1918 to 1947) stay in a city far away from home.Among them, 25 projects have been listed as Shanghai's Most Historical Buildings. His signature work, the Park Hotel, is counted as national heritage. How did Hudec come to enjoy his legendary status in a foreign land, especially as he arrived with almost nothing in his pocket? Why does he continue to attract new followers even in the 21st century? For the last 14 years, Dr. Hua Xiahong has devoted herself to the study of Hudec and his architecture. The Shanghai Hudec Architecture has shown the essence of Hudec’s projects, which is also one part of the essence of Shanghai’s architecture. To know Hudec, is to know the history of Shanghai and the city’s future.Like an encyclopaedia of architecture, his style has gone through Neo-classicism, Expressionism, Art Deco and Modernism, which not only reflects European and American influences, but also the architect’s personal creativity. Hudec has left behind a lot of work that is remarkable in Shanghai's architectural history.Text in English and Chinese.

This book is a classic of theoretical writing on Chinese gardens by Tongji University Professor Chen Zongzhou, a well-known authority on Chinese gardens. Here, the author sets forth new and novel concepts in garden design and propounds a set of distinctive and penetrating ideas on the subject, including the arrangement of scenes, "in-motion" and "in-position" types of gardens, the handling of hills and water, the planning of buildings, and the laying out of flowers and trees. It elucidates the arrangement of gardens and shows how these relate to human sentiments, and how what is tangible in the garden relates to the intangible. With its unique style this book is not only a theoretical work of garden design, but also a work of rare literary value. This book is published both in Chinese and English. The Chinese version is first written in exquisite handwriting, using the traditional writing brush, then reproduced in photocopy. Included here are photographs of Suzhou Gardens and 32 plates of ancient Chinese garden designs which vividly complement the literature. The book will acquaint the reader with the art of Chinese garden design and will serve as a reference for modern garden designers and tourists. Text in English and Chinese.

Modern Chinese cities, which have developed at a rapid speed and on a massive scale for about thirty years, are confronted with many challenges to becoming more livable, healthy and sustainable. Among a variety of design principles this book suggests that walkability is the fundamental principle to improving quality of life. A walkable city provides a convenient and comfortable walking and cycling environment for all local residents. This book attempts to explore the design innovation of creating a walkable city and to propose solutions within the high-density cities Shenzhen and Shanghai. Selected cases include an urban village in Shenzhen and the CBD and a workers' community in Shanghai as different spatial examples to which to apply specific design strategies for a livable, healthy and sustainable city.

In 2009, the College of Design and Innovation, Tongji University was established. The transition from a former Art and Design Department - steeped in the Bauhaus tradition - to an independent school named 'Design and Innovation' attests to the university's vision to move design education and research beyond an artefact-centred crafts tradition and toward a design discipline that drives innovation at the intersection of business, technology, and the humanities. Every autumn since 2012, the Tongji Unversity College of Design and Innovation has organised a small design research and education conference titled 'Emerging Practices'. The Emerging Practices Conference (EPC) witnesses the developing trajectory of design as a discipline in a Chinese design school that is grounded in thinking and practice addressing local issues and is in the meanwhile actively connected globally. A small group of design scholars and educators, who gathered at the EPC in 2014, announced their intention to explore how design can address the complex issues the world faces today. They called their agenda 'DesignX' using 'X' to refer to the turbulent, unknown future of design. The initial DesignX Manifesto has triggered a deeper interest in asking how designers could play a role in designing for complex sociotechnical systems. This anthology selected viewpoint essays and cases, presented at the EPC 2016, as a preliminary endeavour to understand the challenges and opportunities of designing in such complex systems as healthcare, education, public sector innovation, food and culture, and so on.It is inspiring to see that our drive to reform design education and research - and situate design within a shifting social, economic, and technological context - has attracted the attention and participation of a wider community. Our common challenges arise out of a need to reform design education, bridge design research and practice, design for social well-being, and target sustainability on a planet with limited resources. Contents: Introduction; Viewpoints; Globalization, and the Effective Supply of Design Education; Design and the Economy of Choice; The Expanding Scope and Paradigm Shift of Design; Making Things Happen; The Ethics of Ignoring Rashomon; Chicken Run; Information Visualization; Design, Work, and Intelligence Cases; Embedding Designers in Government Innovation Teams; Policy Design to Improve the Delivery of Old Age Security in Canada for Vulnerable Seniors; Design Research and Practice for the Public Good; Movable Feasts; Design for Human-Robot Acceptability; DREAM Complexity.

For the first time, China has built its own goliath of a building - Shanghai Tower, reaching higher than 600 metres, which has since become a major international site. Its construction lasted 73 months, with more than 500 companies and nearly ten thousand workers involved. Shanghai Tower has a building height of 632 metres, weighing 850,000 tons, covering an area of 578,000 square metres, 127 floors above ground, 5 floors underground, as well as the world's fastest elevator. Shanghai Tower can accommodate more than 30,000 people.Behind these awe-inspiring statistics are digital codes hidden in its construction, which prove to be shocking. With precise calculation and efficiency of these digital codes, the building's completion has become a reality. Each code serves as the tower's DNA strands. By an analytical reading of the 95 engineering codes, this book treats these codes as carriers, pathways to explain a more accurate interpretation of the building in 5 chapters, with focuses on Appearance, Experience, Underground Exploring, Construction Q&A and Concept Decoding.
