The Imperial Japanese Navy (Nihon Kaigun) 1900-1945' is a comprehensive study that provides biographical information on several thousand Japanese officers of Admiral rank who served the Empire between 1900-1945, from the time that they attained flag rank, with photographs of most of the senior Admirals. The book also includes an order of battle of the Japanese Navy (IJN) during these years, with a listing of the highest administrative and field commands and their commanders. To complete the overall scope of the subject matter, seven chapters provide information about the aircraft carriers, battleships, and cruisers of the IJN, with histories that include the dates that the vessels were launched, their eventual fates, and photographs of these important elements of the IJN.

With the Soviet invasion of Poland on 17 September 1939, a secret and extraordinary pact came into effect. Two opposing ideologies, National Socialism and Communism, joined forces to wipe the hated Poland off the map. Even plans for a sub-Poland were eventually dismissed. This co-operation had earlier historical roots, but was also born out of practical necessity. Besides the origins of cooperation, we will reflect on the practical implementation of this pact. Europe's two largest armies fought the same opponent from opposite directions. With ideological diversity, conflicts and accidents lurked. Caution was imperative. Curiosity was there too; about each other's weapons systems, each other's armies and officers, and about the 'Jewish' political commissioners. Fear of friendly fire played a role a well, because accidents happen, and indeed things went wrong in several places.

In the end, the spoils had to be divided. What were the implications of September 17th? Who actually won the most, and how did things continue? The partition of Poland was the kick-off of a hugely complex military and historical event. So far, the Devil's Pact has attracted more diplomatic-historical interest than factual. Thanks to new sources, including the released Russian archives (with German material), this pact can now be charted in more detail for the first time. This victory was celebrated, but it was like dancing on a volcano; it ultimately did not allow itself to be smothered.

In February 1945 the German front at Stettin made one final offensive. What make this extraordinary is the fact that the last desperate push was mounted by non-German volunteers serving in the Waffen-SS. The main body of the division was composed of Scandinavian volunteers, Belgians and Dutchmen. This text presents a history of the Dutch volunteers of the Waffen-SS from 1941 to 1945.

Dr Jan Luijten (1932), a neurologist and psychiatrist by profession, was living in Bergen op Zoom during the Second World War. He describes the battles of the Canadian forces for the liberation of the Dutch province of Noord-Brabant in this well documented and finely illustrated book. The author offers interesting new insights into the fighting and the decisions made by the Allied Commanders and their German counterparts.

Van Der Zee re-creates the life story of Fritz Pfeffer, a German born Jewish dentist, who under the name of 'Dussel' -- which means 'day-dreamer' or even 'dullard' -- prominently appears in the diary of Anne Frank. In Het Achterhuis, Anne Frank describes this man, who was her roommate in hiding for almost two years, as a narrow minded, irritating and gloomy figure. This material, including Pfeffer's last letter to Kaletta, his lover, dated 15 November 1942, came into the hands of the well-known Dutch historian Nanda van der Zee. With the help of Pfeffer's son, who gave her a wealth of unpublished photographs, as well as friends and acquaintances of Kaletta and Pfeffer from Germany, Holland, Belgium and South Africa and the Pfeffer archives of the Anne Frank Foundation, she re-created the story of his life. This book, which was published in the Netherlands in 1990, is the merit of Nanda van der Zee that she corrects the image that Anne Frank gave of Pfeffer and in essence rehabilitates him. He emerges as an affectionate man and a caring, warm lover. This new image proves to be a correction to the 'Diary' and may alter some of the hagiography surrounding Anne Frank. The testimony this book provides will penetrate deeper than a more empirical, historical account. It is a valuable supplement to the 'Diary'. The most significant value however lies in the author's underlying message: that war has a total, senseless and destructive effect on everybody.

The encounter at Tannenberg went into history as a decisive historical battle. The actions of Erich Ludendorff indeed formed the highlight of a series of battles that prevented the tsarist army already advancing to Berlin in 1914. It was also the prelude to the enormous power Ludendorff accumulated later during the war and would turn out to be so disastrous for the German empire.

Each adoption is a unique event for the people who are personally involved, or for those who feel connected to the parents-to-be. The adoption period takes you to a new world and can wear you down emotionally if you are not prepared for what can be expected. It is not the regular pregnancy with which some people like to compare it. It is a pregnancy between cold bureaucracy on one side and the daily feelings of vulnerable tenderness on the other. Many books have been written about the ins and outs of pregnancies but there was never a book to prepare oneself for that very special time we call adoption. Geeri Bakker takes you there with her positive attitude and her sense of humor. She takes you along the unpredictable, uncomfortable and sometimes seemingly endless path that is the adoption procedure. THE ADOPTION HANDBOOK teaches adoptive parents-to-be how to face stress in its many appearances during the sometimes dark and winding road that leads to their adoptive child. To illustrate the book, Geeri Bakker shares her own story of the procedures that she and her husband endured when adopting their two children. It is not the (Dutch) procedure that makes this story so touching and at times breathtaking. It is the way that stress burrows into hearts that desperately wish to adopt a child; something that anyone going through an adoption procedure will recognize. THE ADOPTION HANDBOOK helps adoptive parents acknowledge their feelings of stress during their long-term 'pregnancy' and deal with them: facing the main goal, and feeling energetically able, both physically and mentally, to 'conceive' their child when the time is right. It is only normal that pregnant couples gather information to prepare themselves. So now it is time that adoptive parents prepare themselves, as well. For the well-being of this special child, given to you to have, hold, love, cherish, and to let it grow and grow up in your family.

There is scarcely an historical subject which arouses the fantasy as much as the history of the secretive Order of the Temple. Although it has been disbanded for nearly 700 years, books continue to appear about these religious knights. In these books it is claimed that the Templars uncovered the grave of Jesus, that they were the discoverers of America and the guardians of the Turin Shroud or that they found the Holy Grail. There are also critical writings about the Templars. They were supposed to be drunkards and devil worshipers. Koert ter Veen decided it was time that the truth behind the sagas and myths was studied and told. In this impressive, elaborate and richly illustrated book, he tells the factual tragic history of the Order. At the beginning of the fourteenth century, the French King Philip IV, due to shortage of money, ensured the misbegotten name of the Templars. The King wanted to possess the supposed riches of the Templars by discrediting and destroying them. The position of the monk-soldiers was weakened by their lack of success against the Islamic forces during the Crusades. The Order was destroyed, but its undeserved bad reputation lingers on. This informative and interesting book will entertain a large readership, from scholar to layman.

Even fifty-nine years after the actual fighting the Battle of Arnhem still represents a most telling defeat for a great many people. The fierce and bloody fighting for the bridge across the river Rhine near the capital of the Dutch province of Gelderland is perhaps one of the best-known episodes in the history of the Second World War. Scores of books, newspaper articles, documentary and even some feature films have been dedicated to the planning and execution of Field Marshal Montgomery's plan of attack. As the liberation of the part of Holland above the great rivers only seemed a matter of time, its tragic outcome had traumatic consequences for all who participated in the fighting. Tragically, the crossing of the Rhine appeared to be a bridge too far'.

This book is one of the first scientific publications that the subject food combines with genetics and genomics and information provides about new options for prevention and management of disease. This complex interplay between genes, food and environment is not only a fascinating new field of research but a new vital area for maintaining health and adequate healthcare. The book gives the most recent knowledge about the effects on chronic diseases such as neurological and cardio vascular disorders and a number of rare metabolic disorders such as phenylketonuria (PKU and coeliac disease. The meaning for pregnancy and the first years of life is prominently described. The situation in developing countries (India) is discussed with proposals for structural improvements. The authors have written their contributions on request of patient organisations who wish a scientific basis for health policy and action in this field. The book will be published under auspices of the World Alliance of Organisations for the Prevention of Birth Defects.

Text in English & Dutch. "Soul Survey" is an expedition through the dark corners of our mind. It registers our reaction to loss, illness, addiction, death ... or actually anything that challenges our balance in life. In eleven chapters, the book displays a number of very recognisable emotions and beliefs through Victorian-Romantic photography and poetry, quotes and words of wisdom. Each chapter is introduced by an image of "One Cup...", a still life photo project about the passion of Jesus Christ. Drinking that one cup meant pain, loneliness and death for Him, but eventually resulted in new life...

Could the twin brothers be considered lucky, being the only concentration camp survivors from the Jewish community in Elburg. And what about the few dozen out of 660 men deported from Putten who returned after the war, were they lucky? In "The Silent Final" Henk Vaessen shows that for those who survived the war camps the suffering did not stop when they were liberated. For the spectator the war lasts from the beginning till the end . . . for the victim it lasts the rest of his life. And even then it is not over. . . The story confronts the reader with controversial subjects like the 'second and third generation syndrome', the relationship Judaism-Christianity and anti-semitism. At the same time the author interweaves humour and gravity in the daily life of the main characters.

Many books have been written about how we might save life on Earth. Some people believe that saving the Earth will cost 125 billion dollars while others claim that 1000 billion dollars will not be enough to achieve that goal. The solution as described in this book will not cost a penny! Indeed, all people will get the possibility for enlarging inner wisdom and material welfare. Forming a better future requires a different way of thinking, a different way of living together. That is the message of this book. On scrutinising the history of the world, one may discover a number of remarkable issues which are typical for human development. It determines the state of affairs in our present society and reveals a number of serious problems putting our entire world at risk. This situation is giving rise to a number of possible future scenarios which do not seem to be all that bright and shining. Are we going to let this happen? Does mankind want to evolve like plants and animals or do we want to show that we are intelligent creatures determined to shape our own future? Look at the positive developments in our current society and look at the results a spiritual society may offer. The spiritual society may provide different objectives and principles and might genuinely solve problems. Thus, it might be a world of love in which people strive to be in balance with our planet as well as with the universe. This ideal future might become a real world in which the term 'together' refers to warm human values instead of purely economic ones. Your future, our world?

Using documents from German, American, and Hungarian archives, and previously unpublished photographs, the author describes Hitler's obsession with the Hungarian oilfields near Nagykanisza and how it influenced his military and political actions. He also discusses the tragic extradition of the Hungarian Jews by SS-commander Eichmann.

Since the fall of 'the wall' in 1989 enormous changes have been taking place in Central Europe. Political, national, cultural and geographic patterns that have shaped Central Europe up until the time of the First World War are again beginning to emerge as the power and dynamism of the Wilsonian right to self-determination and autonomy which national communities will inevitably claim for themselves, is asserted. The biggest minority issue is that of the Hungarians. The Treaty of Trianon (1920), which for 75 years has influenced the workings of the power constellation in the region was responsible for depriving Hungary of two-thirds of its territory and for turning millions of Hungarians domiciled in surrounding countries into second-class citizens. Even today Hungarian communities are still being exposed to the cruel and relentless psychological and physical terror that, in some states, has taken on the form of genocide. Things are starting to change though. The structure of countries caught in the grasp of tyranny such as Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia, has already disintegrated and now the Hungarians are struggling for the rights and autonomy. Up to now, the west has not paid enough attention to the Hungarian interest. Dr Laszlo Maracz writes in his book that the opinion about Hungarians is defined by stereotypes and prejudices. The Hungarians are stigmatised as nationalists, revisionists and anti-semitists. This judgment is in violent contrast with those brave Hungarian rebels who in 1956 fought empty-handed against the Soviets to gain freedom. In the upheavals of 1989, the Hungarians supported the revolution to topple the 'Rumanian genius', Ceaucescu. The west makes an error of judgment. In spite of the historical set backs that have led into national disunity. Hungary is the only loyal country in this region to support the democratic west.

Text in Dutch. There exists in the history of the Roman Catholic Church is hardly a bloodier chapter than the struggle against the Cathars, who were rebelling against the moral decay of the Orthodox clergy. Catharism unfolded in the course of the 12th century in the south of France to a direct threat of traditional Christianity. Eventually was commissioned by the Pope to fire and sword put an end to the rise of Catharism. The way they accepted their cruel fate and convinced of their faith fire deaths occurred, still speaks to our imagination. Angie Nolen describes the history of the Cathars and brings the locations where the crusade against them took place in picture.

On 22 September 1914 between 6.20am and 7.55am three British cruisers went down off the Dutch coast, HMS Aboukir, Hogue and Cressy. Of the combined crew of 2296 no less than 1459 men perished on their ships or in the sea. There were 837 survivors. The perpetrator was a simple German submarine, U-9. This event in the early days of the First World War came as a big boost to the Germans. But for the British it was a dire blow, the biggest loss ever inflicted on the Royal Navy, hitherto deemed invincible. The suffering was the more grievous now that among the fatalities were thirteen young boys, aged 15 and 16, while most of the other victims were reservists, mainly young family fathers from a few villages in the Chatham area. After some years of research the author has written a uniquely accessible reconstruction of this tragedy. Successively he pictures the build-up to this calamity, the crew's trials and tribulations, as well as the consequences of the incident from both a British and a German point of view. The hard times of the crewmembers had to go through are reflected in the personal accounts of some of the survivors of the catastrophe. Two Dutch merchant vessels had rescued a number of them and the men were then received and looked after in Holland. That too is part of this pitiful tragedy, which, though almost forgotten, was one of the largest calamities ever in the history of naval warfare.

During a trip on the Trans-Siberia Express, an older abbot and his companion, a young physicist, discover love, each in his own way. They travel from Moscow to Vladivostok, calling in on some eighteen cities along the way. In each city the abbot answers questions from the local congregation. These penetrating lessons of life are enhanced by private conversations between the abbot and his companion -- and other people they meet. The humanistic, 'enlightenment nature of the Lessons, increasingly brings the abbot in conflict with the Church'. His companion gradually realises that real life is much more interesting than his scientific occupations. The long trip through the vast Siberian emptiness leads both of them to a fierce inner struggle, which culminates in a dramatic ending.

Dago Steenis (1925) articulates a view that explains why, at this point in evolution, humankind is on the brink of historic development. The existing cultural crisis makes it imperative that we embrace a fundamental revolution in our way of thinking, including our approach to service. This will enable us to deepen our understanding of the natural world, our role as human beings and culture. Armed with this deeper understanding we will be able to rise above our more primitive traits and create a truly humane society. The world population will need to unite politically to overcome the global problems it now faces. For only a united humanity will be able to effectively address the current global concerns. The first step towards world unity under a world government is to create a World Unity Movement.

Based on the 'theory formation of entrepreneurship', as has been developed over the past few decades by political economists, sociologist and social-economic historians on the notion 'entrepreneurship', this study will focus on how entrepreneurship in the Netherlands, specifically during 'Trade Capitalism' (1350-1815), took shape and what its contribution has been to the period of 'Total Capitalism' (as from the late 1980s). Three sub-periods during 'Trade Capitalism' will be studied. The first sub-period runs from 1350 to 1580 and is considered to be the upbeat to the 'first modern economy' in the world. In the second sub-period, running from 1580 to approximately 1670 (the so-called Dutch "Golden Age"), this first modern economy reached its absolute zenith. During the then following third sub-period, from 1670 to 1815, we see forms of economic stagnations and a gradual decline in trade in the Netherlands. Perpendicular to each of these three periods, four dimensions related to the functioning of entrepreneurship will be applied so as to assess the entrepreneur's standing in practice. These are 1) identifying and making optimal use of 'opportunity conditions', 2) institutional development in which government played an important role, 3) socio-cultural aspects affecting entrepreneurship, and 4) specific personal characteristics of the entrepreneur. All of these also provide insight into the entrepreneurship in the past and its contribution to the present-day Total Economy.

This is the memoir of Jeno halmaji Bor, Lieutenant-Field Marshal of the Royal Hungarian Army during World War II. During the course of his long life, this Hungarian patriot experienced the history of the 20th Century in the making, having participated as a combatant in both world wars. His autobiography, translated from its original version in Hungarian, chronicles Bor's experiences in the armed forces of the Austro- Hungarian Empire, and later as an officer in the Hungarian Army. The narrative covers his life as a cadet before World War I, his combat experiences during the Great War, and his steady rise through the ranks of the post-World War I Hungarian Armed Forces to become a senior general during the turmoil that surrounded Hungary's occupation by Germany and subsequent fall to the Soviets. The final part of the book deals with the General's life as a POW, then a refugee, before his eventual emigration to the USA.

On 18 September 1944, Day Two of Operation Market Garden, a thunder in the sky alarmed the Dutch town of Heinkenszand. The citizens ran outside their homes, to see a burning bomber flying toward them and parachutes floating down. The American B-24 Liberator skimmed over the buildings and crashed in a polder. Two airmen lost their lives, German soldiers arrested six, and two managed to escape. Local resistance fighters came to the aid of the escaped airmen. This book, written by a grandson of one of the resistance fighters, describes the missions of the crew, the circumstances of the fatal crash and the grim faith of these airmen. This is also the story of the local resistance group that helped the two evaders to hide. We follow the trail of arrested radio operator Elton Southwell, as he takes us on a horrific journey through army bases and concentration camps to a final, cruel welcome at a POW camp in Nazi-occupied Poland. He tells how he barely survived the infamous Black March and escaped from the German guards.

One can find plenty of literature on the life and works of William Shakespeare. Much less if any can be found and read about his three children. This is the first book about the married life of his eldest daughter Susanna with her husband doctor John Hall, a general practitioner in the Stratford-upon-Avon of those days. Through the eyes of Susanna and with her husband's original notes on his patients we get acquainted with the family, neighbours and friends of her famous father. In this was we get to know William Shakespeare more as a family- and townsman. All the persons mentioned did actually exist. From Susanna's point of view we learn about the hard work involved in running a doctor's practice in the first half of the seventeenth century. The book intertwines the cases of Hall's patients with an account of what often tumultuous daily life in Stratford, all based on true facts. With the remarkable dates of her two marriages Eliza, only child of Susanna and John Hall, honoured definitely her dear parents and her beloved famous grandfather.

This novel is based on real events, as explained in the preface. It concerns de battle between "good and evil", between "decency and sexual abuse", in which Iris, a beautiful young woman handicapped by a rare hereditary defect, GSA, genetic sexual attraction, is the ultimate victim. Rarely sexual infatuation has been so graphically described in contemporary literature as in this erotic thriller with a surprising dénouement.

Syria has got a hold on the world for quite some time. The Assad family tries to remain in control using all means necessary, while the rebels are trying to get rid of the dictator. By now the regime's opponents are internally divided. This book will guide the reader to the phoney war between the sectarian groups. The world is watching from afar and questions what to do or what side to choose. In the meantime the refugee problem is getting worse. This book will take the reader to where it is all taking place.

The Crimea attracts a great deal of interest. The area is of great emotional value to Moscow. How this came about history teaches us from 1941 up to 1942, when Von Manstein's 11th army invaded the Crimea and began the siege of Sevastopol. It was the start of the heroic defence of the city by the Red Army. This book also elaborates on the massive collaboration of the Crimean-Tatars and the blood of the Jews which sticks to the hands of SS-officer Otto Ohlendorf and the Einsatzgruppe D.

The Fokkens are well-known, both in Holland and internationally. In their previous work we got acquainted with "the garden gnome", and learned about other exciting details from their sex room. In this book the ladies leave nothing out, allowing the reader to learn about Holland's most famous neighbourhood: the Red Light District. With their stories they enlighten us about, for instance, the "Bon Bon eater", "Pimmetje the Runner", "the Fucker" and "the Turd".
