"This past decade or so, the study of East Norse philology has been experiencing something of a renaissance. This volume contains twelve articles written by international scholars from seven different countries. Based on papers given at the Fourth International Conference for East Norse Philology held in Cologne in June 2019, this volume presents the latest research within areas such as Text Witness and Linguistics, Paleography as well as Codicology, Transmission, Adaptation, and Media Change. Three Crowns and Eleven Tears: East Norse Philology from Cologne is the fourth volume published by Selskab for Østnordisk Filologi Sällskap för östnordisk filologi, founded in Uppsala in 2013."

"Health care involves a complex interplay of medical and behavioural expertise. This book offers both a broad overview of medical psychology and some deep dives into specific areas of practice. We are, I suspect, only beginning to discover the ways in which medical and psychological science offer complementary paths for healing. Medical professionals face a broad range of challenges beyond acute healing. As reflected in the chapters of this book, much of current medical practice involves managing chronic conditions that are related to patients behaviour and lifestyle. Whether or not a disease was caused by lifestyle, its course, management, and outcome are often intertwined with behavioural choices. Even in acute care, pharmacotherapy and physical rehabilitation rely on patients adhering to prescribed medication or practices. Behaviour change is therefore fundamental in health care; yet it often receives relatively little time and attention in medical training." -- William B. Miller

How can literature engage readers and speak to matters of concern, inspire attachments, weave affiliations, or forge collectives? How can literature be useful to readers and in society and what are the dynamics between the actors involved? These are some of the questions that have been explored in the research project Uses of Literature The Social Dimensions of Literature, which took place at the University of Southern Denmark (SDU) from 2016 to 2021 under the guidance of Niels Bohr Professor Rita Felski. This journalistic report highlights the most important insights, discussions, and results that have emerged from the five years of collaborative research at SDU through interviews with more than twenty scholars. The research presented in this publication covers topics such as narrative medicine, new sociologies of literature, literary perspectives on love, gender and recognition, new approaches to teaching, as well as precarity and the social dimensions of literature. The report aims to open up the rich portfolio of research that has been conducted at SDU and make it available to other scholars as well as actors outside of academia, such as teachers, librarians, and readers. Both the report and the research project have been funded by the Danish National Research Foundation.

The Kongemose culture has for many years lived in the shadow of the more well-known Ertebølle and the Maglemose cultures. This is not, in any way, due to any inferiority on the part of the Kongemose culture, compared to the other two. But it is, to a very great extent, a consequence of the lack of publication of the relatively rich archaeological record that has emerged over the years. It is my hope to be able, by way of this book, to make a contribution to disseminating knowledge about the Kongemose culture to a much wider audience than the restricted group of archaeologists, primarily from Southern Scandinavia, who normally work with this period.

This volume presents, besides the publication of an Imperial-late antique necropolis outside the Myndos Gate in ancient Halikarnassos, a number of contributions concerning on-going and recent research on tombs and deathscapes. The necropolis outside the Myndos Gate in Halikarnassos. Four articles concern the publication of the 22 monumental tombs and their mosaics, the surveying and drawing of the necropolis, and the inscriptions that belonged to the tombs. In relation to this follows a linguistic analysis of two local funerary terms. Intramural tombs and coffins in Halikarnassos. Two articles shed further light on aspects of death and burial in Halikaniassos -- one through a recently excavated intramural necropolis, the other through some preliminary observations on sarcophagi. The Maussolleion. Two articles revolve around finds made on the site that housed the most famous Karian tomb monument, the Maussolleion. A funerary epigram from Halikamassos. One article scrutinises a funerary epigram from Halikarnassos mentioning a family that moved from Thurii to Halikarnassos. Deathscapes of the Halikarnassos peninsula and Karia. Çukurbük and Loryma. Two articles concentrate on necropoleis outside Halikarnassos -- a first preliminary report on Çukurbük, a prehistoric necropolis on the Halikarnassos peninsula, and the deathscapes of Loryma on the Bozburun peninsula in the Karian Chersones.

H.C. Andersens tales are considered as classical fairy tales in China. How Wenjie Li they have achieved this canonical status is one of the concerns of this book. Taking a historical point of view, this book has explained how the Chinese translations and interpretations of his tales, since they were first introduced and translated, have contributed to their canonization, and how they have shaped the various images of Andersen in different temporal periods. Moreover, considering translation as a social practice taking place in a polysystem, this book has further explicated how socio-political factors like economics and ideology, as well as human factors such as patrons, translators, and readers, have influenced the Chinese translations and interpretations of Andersens tales. In addition, by referring to the Chinese target texts, English mediating texts and Danish original texts, this book has clarified the intertextual relations and influences operating among different versions of Andersens tales.

Danish literature from 1000 to 1900 is an account of Danish literature from the earliest period to the modern breakthrough of the late 19th century. Together with Danish literature in the 20th and the early 21st century this volume forms a complete history of Danish-language literature. At a time when information about individual authors and their works is only a quick click away and constantly updated, it can be an advantage to gather together this myriad of information and place it in coherent order particularly for readers unable to read Danish. That is the basis for these two volumes on Danish literature. They provide a framework within which the richness of information about authors and their works can be appreciated as forming a rich, connected and connecting narrative. Danish Literature from 1000 to 1900 is an inclusive and networked literary history that does not turn literary texts into mute museum pieces. The volume includes an analysis of the world famous Danish History of Saxo Grammaticus of the middle ages as well as a presentation of the renaissance masterpiece, Memoirs, by Leonora Christina Ulfeldt. The writings of the leading enlightenment author, Ludvig Holberg, are also introduced and the romanticist novelist Thomasine Gyllembourg, the fairytale author Hans Christian Andersen and the philosopher Søren Kierkegaard are key figures of the historic exposition. The volume is concluded by an introduction to the authors of the modern breakthrough. Central international contributions to literary studies and extensive discussion on periodization is included in Danish Literature from 1000 to 1900 so that readers may relate this periodization to the periodization of other national literatures. The volume also includes chronological overviews and notes on literary studies discussion of historiography and influential recent research and approaches to Danish literature.

The fornaldarsögur Norðurlanda (literally ancient sagas of the northern lands, but often referred to in English as mythical-heroic or legendary sagas) are a group of some 35 Icelandic prose narratives relating the exploits of kings and heroes of late iron-age and early Viking-age Scandinavia -- before the unification of Norway under Haraldr hárfagri and the settlement of Iceland in the late ninth century, and hence before the dawn of reliable historical writing. In their present form, the fornaldarsögur are generally presumed to date from the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries and thus represent one of the younger, post-classical genres of saga literature, but most have at least some basis in significantly older tradition. Although many, with their stock characters and fondness for the fabulous, have been dismissed as historically unreliable and of scant artistic merit, their great and lasting popularity is attested by the very large number of manuscripts in which they are preserved -- over a thousand in all, the earliest from the beginning of the fourteenth century, the latest from the beginning of the twentieth. Most were also recast in verse, either as rímur, lengthy poems in complex metres, or in ballad form, and they have also served as sources of inspiration for writers as diverse as Adam Oehlenschläger and J.R.R. Tolkien. The essays in the present volume emanate from the research project Stories for all time: The Icelandic fornaldarsögur, based at the University of Copenhagen, the principal aim of which was to survey the entire transmission history of the fornaldarsögur. In keeping with the focus of the project, the essays presented here deal with various aspects of the transmission and reception of the fornaldarsögur, from their earliest manifestations until the present day.

From the time when Alexander the Great conquered the world and almost until the Romans lost theirs, a small village in Thy survived all sorts of challenges, among these climate change, opening and closing of the Limfjord estuary and possibly wars, in a location well away from the 'civilised' world. Preserved partly by the inhabitants continuous use of chalk for floors and forecourts and partly by subsequently having been covered by accumulating layers of sand or clay, large amounts of bones, bone tools, ceramics, metal objects, macrofossils and many other materials have now been excavated and analysed. This work was done by a small team consisting of an archaeologist, a zoologist and a couple of experts in macrofossils. The results considerably widen our knowledge about husbandry, agriculture, hunting, fishing, bone tool making, metal work, textiles and much more from the period considered. Important finds such as whale-bones, a single cockerel, maybe even a donkey are among the more exotic finds that broaden the bigger picture. The analysis also shows how the village mound evolved, with houses being expanded or made smaller, and farms being relocated over time. The Smedegård publication presents much of what is missing in terms of our knowledge of many Iron Age settlements in Denmark and can help the reader to achieve a more vivid impression of life in the Early Iron Age of Denmark.

Hans Christian Andersens long-standing canonical status among his Russian readers is owed specifically to his fairy tales. For the nearly two centuries of their presence in Russian culture, these stories have become an organic part of the cultural memory of generations of readers, his texts constituting a particular cultural code that is employed in various artistic fields. The scholars involved in the Andersen in Russia project, whose works are published here, aimed to analyse the cultural code of Russian Anderseniana. They have explored specifically the legacy of Andersens fairy tales, which has influenced the most diverse spheres of Russian culture: literature, literary criticism, music, film, theatre, various media forms, and the art of illustration.

The current volume offers a comparative approach to the study of the dissolution of monasteries in Scandinavia. In a Northern European context the Danish reformation has often been portrayed as uncompromising, and yet the dismantling of the monasteries in Denmark was neither easy, nor a fast process. The last Danish monastery was not closed down until 1621. In other words, the central question is why it took so long? Theologians of Wittenberg were clear on the matter of the monasteries. As a consequence, the task of closing them down was transferred to lay authorities. The process was further complicated by close relations between monasteries and princes and noble families, whom had often contributed in establishing the monasteries. Power balances among these parties changed over time and they varied depending on state and government. Religious orders equally played a part in this process. Despite the many differences, more general patterns can still be traced. This volume addresses the above themes of variation and general patterns. The essays are authored by scholars from a number of disciplines and nationalities and are based on a wide range of sources. They are the outcome of an International conference held at the Centre for Medieval and Renaissance Studies, University of Southern Denmark to mark the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation.

Shame and guilt are quintessential human emotions. They are reflective emotions and also what we might call social feelings; they affect individuals as well as collective cultures. Shame and guilt are similar in that they both reveal a failure of the self in regard to common norms. However, shame concerns the self and a persons self-identity, whereas guilt is linked to specific actions towards others. SHAME ON YOU explores shame and guilt in a Western and Scandinavian context focusing on a wide range of authors: from 19th century writers such as Carlo Collodi and Henrik Ibsen through modernist writers such as Frans Kafka, Virginia Woolf, Djuna Barnes and Marguerite Duras to contemporary writers such as Elizabeth Gilbert, Charlotte Roche and Yahya Hassan. The individual chapters focus on the cultural alteration of shame and guilt an alteration that is indicated for example by pointing out the contrast between the repression of sexuality that has historically been prevalent and the demand for enjoyment today. This development also implies a change in the position of the subject. Hence, the focus on shame reveals a change in the subjects relation to him- or herself. The book has a mainly literary perspective, but the first three chapters open with theoretical and historical assessments of shame and guilt.

The theme of community has perhaps never been of a more vital significance than in our present day and age. The process we refer to as modernity has been synonymous with the gradual fragmentation and disintegration of traditional communities on various levels of our societies. Today, we might be facing the culmination of this process. The spectres of nationalism are undermining various national and international communities. Inequality is on the rise. If people unite it is too often in the mistrust and sometimes hatred of other people. Hans Christian Andersen lived at a time when this process was at its early stages, and he was acutely aware of its potential perils. Alongside the transformations of traditional communities, other communities seem to appear. A recurring element in these culturally specific communities is literature, and Hans Christian Andersen is a key figure here, as his literary and cultural legacy has a magnetic effect on people around the globe. A vivid example of this effect was the conference Hans Christian Andersen and Community. The conference was held at the University of Southern Denmark in 2017 to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Hans Christian Andersens status as honourary citizen in Odense. This book presents a selection of 19 contributions to the conference. In various ways, each chapter activates the concept of community in relation to Andersen as an author and as a citizen of the world he lived in as well as the cultural icon which he has become.

What happens when an old cultural institution is subjected to marketisation and individualisation? How does the institution do justice to the inner core of its traditions, whilst at the same time keeping up with the demands of its individual users, as well as the marketisation requirements coming from the state and society in general? And, how do these responses affect the way that the institution contributes to the generation of social capital? Taking the Danish Folk Church as their core example, researchers representing different academic disciplines analyse these questions in 17 chapters. The choice to use the Folk Church as the main case for evaluating how old institutions respond is in itself provocative and challenging. The book therefore opens with a discussion of why the Folk Church provides an example of a cultural institution worthy of being analysed in this way. The four main parts of the book elaborate on relevant parts of the history of the Folk Church; the nature of marketisation; of individualisation and of social capital as related to the Folk Church. The book concludes with a discussion of the effects of marketisation and individualisation on cultural institutions like the Folk Church. Cultural institutions must ask themselves what happens to What Money Cant Buy in their response to marketisation and individualisation.

This volume contains sixteen articles by international experts from different disciplines touching on various aspects on medieval and early modern cults of saints from different corners of Europe, with a special focus on Scandinavian saints and their artistic receptions up to modern times. The saints represented different aspects of a Christian world-view forming the basis of communal identities, still present in post-Reformation Europe. Notions of cultural memory underpin several of the studies in the volume. Moreover, the reader will also find articles concerning the function of saints cults, in particular how the material culture of these cults was perceived and experienced by the medieval beholder. The book includes a recording of music from the Middle Ages up to modern times focusing on saints and the notion of sanctity.

A multidisciplinary project focusing on supply chain innovation in the offshore wind energy sector has been carried out from 2014 to 2019. Based on in-depth industry involvement, the overall objective of the project is to provide new knowledge on means for Reducing the Cost of Energy (ReCoE) obtained from offshore wind parks through industrialisation of the sector. The project has been managed by the University of Southern Denmark and, beyond own researchers from the Faculty of Business and Social Sciences and the Faculty of Engineering, has also included researchers from the United States, the United Kingdom, and France. The whole project has applied a management approach to ReCoE. This book contains 16 selected articles disseminating practical relevant knowledge about supply chain management practice, maturity, innovation-fostering practice, supply network strategies, operations and maintenance, and emerging issues. The articles are encapsulated by an introduction to ReCoE and perspectives on future developments of research within this area.

Ever since the discovery of Leonora Christinas Jammers Minde in the nineteenth century, its author has been the subject of an increasing number of controversial debates, historical treatises, and creative exploitation. When Leonora Christinas written account of the more than two decades she spent imprisoned in the Blue Tower in Copenhagen was published in 1869, her name was, indeed, already shrouded in legend, an outcome due in no small part to the work of Ludvig Holberg and Hans Christian Andersen among others. Yet the dissemination of Jammers Minde and its self-portrayal of Leonora Christina as an envied, superior martyr, renewed interest in this notorious noblewoman and led to the creation of a multitude of artistic, literary, and historical portrayals. This study examines the image Leonora Christina created of herself through Jammers Minde and the texts interplay with her other writings. Furthermore, Helene Peterbauer chronicles the adoption of the multifarious elements of this image in the scholarly, historical, and literary imagination of this woman.

This book concerns the Early Neolithic on Bornholm, c. 3950-3300 BC. Using archaeological finds and excavations, we will study how the first farming society was established and developed. To write an account of how people lived and what their living conditions were like nearly 6,000 years ago is no easy task. The authors felt, however, that the remains and finds from Bornholm dating to this important period may have something to say, and that this could even result in new interpretations. It all began early in our collaboration when excavating the settlement site at Vallensgård, close to the famous Echo Valley (Ekkodalen), near the centre of the island.

In 1859, 1862 and 1863, under the direction of archaeologist Conrad Engelhardt, extensive excavations were undertaken in the bog Nydam in Southern Jutland, Denmark. The investigations revealed that, during the Roman and Early Germanic Iron Ages, extensive major offerings were made here of weapons and other military equipment presumably war booty. Engelhardts archaeological finds from Nydam, and the history of the bog itself, are comprehensively described in the literature, and it can be safely asserted that the locality and its finds occupy a prominent place in the identity history of Southern Jutland. However, as the analyses of the Ejsbøl finds and, not least, the post-war periods other major war booty site at Illerup Ådal, excavated by the Prehistoric Museum in Aarhus, now Moesgaard Museum, began to be published in the 1980s, the need for new investigations at Nydam seemed ever more pressing. Excavating Nydam, as the title suggests, is a book about the Danish National Museums excavations at Nydam in 1989‑99. In addition to a description of the various excavations, the geology of the bog and an identification of the individual votive depositions, the main emphasis is on presentation of the wooden artefacts, the conservation and recording of which would not have been possible without the combined, integrated efforts of archaeologists, scientists/environmental archaeologists and conservators.

On 16 April 1620, Raghunatha Nayak of Tanjore invited Danes to settle down and establish trade in Tharangampadi known also as Tranquebar. Over the next 225 years, several hundred Danes made Tranquebar their home, and over a thousand found their resting place here. During this period, printing was established by German missionaries, a Protestant mission was founded, science and arts flourished, an astronomical observatory was set up and an exploration of the Nicobar Islands took place. The town had to be rescued several times from impending wars. This book shows glimpses of this exciting period from the remains left by the Danes. Arranged as a walking tour of the town, we pass by places where significant people lived and noteworthy events took place.

In a military operation that ran from autumn 2013 to summer 2014, a multinational naval force managed to remove approx. 1,300 tons of chemical weapons and substances from civil war-torn Syria. The operation was led by Danish naval officer Torben Mikkelsen. This book is based on the diary he wrote during the six months he was in command of the Danish-Norwegian-British force. The book provides a frank and honest insight into the work of a naval officer in the 21st century and the challenges inherent in conducting a multinational operation at a time of increasing tensions between the worlds great powers. The book is illustrated with more than 100 maps and photographs, the majority of which have not been published before.

Humanlike robots and digital humans are both fun and useful in many situations. But the more we interact with technology with human traits, the more we believe it to possess real human characteristics like consciousness and personality. As a new breed of artificial beings enters society on a large scale, many of us will start believing they deserve moral consideration and perhaps even rights. In this entertaining and humorously written book, Thomas Telving argues that even though the above scenario is close to inevitable, we should still do all we can to avoid it. Presenting us with thought-provoking future scenarios, state of the art scientific research, and engaging philosophical reflections, he shows us how to avoid some of the scariest pitfalls of human-like technology.

"The joyous experience I have gained is that, as art and life have become clearer to me, more sunshine has entered my heart from without; what a blessing to receive after hitherto dark days. Peace and conviction have entered my soul; such peace, however, can be well combined with the changing life of travel; there was a time when I felt so heavily pressed and tormented at home that being away was at least a cessation of suffering. As the foreign was thus adorned with a halo of peace, I grew fond of it, and since it is in my nature to easily connect with people who return trust and warmth, I felt well abroad and gladly went." "To Travel is to Live!"

This is an anthology about technology's role in the modernisation process. It is written by a European group of historians of technology. Technological modernisation is very much a question of transferring technology from an innovating culture to a culture aspiring to economic growth. But technology is not only a lever of riches. Sometimes it was not even that. Technology in this anthology is not defined as artefacts only, but as skills and culture, too. Technology transfer was, perhaps, the most important agent of modernisation. Consequently, modernisation must be understood as a complex internationalisation of technological competence. Technological artefacts will always be embedded in a cultural environment. During transfer the recipient culture is likely to be upset, because transfer of technology invariably means transfer of cultural values. Sometimes the recipient culture refuses the technology transfer, sometimes it manages to shape the technological artefact according to its own cultural values, but quite often the recipient cultures succumb. The modernisation process can be seen as technology transfer smoothing out divergencies between cultures of European nation states. Or a smelting pot of technological artefacts and skills. This volume is an attempt to study the relationship between technology as artefacts and skills and cultural environments, academies of science, education systems and ethical values in a comparative European perspective. The papers were given at a conference in Roskilde in 1992 attended by some 40 historians of technology from Germany, the Netherlands, Scandinavia and the United Kingdom.

Madison Jones is the author of eleven novels, among them are The Innocent, An Exile (film: I Walk the Line), A Cry of Absence, Season of the Strangle, and Nashville 1864: The Dying of the Light winner of the T.S. Eliot Award for Creative Writing. His novel Herod's Wife appeared in 2003. Madison Jones is a central figure in American literature, but paradoxically not well-known. He writes about conflicts between the native and the alien, tradition and progress, and innocence and experience. Like his fellow-novelists George Garrett and David Madden, who have contributed to this volume, Jones shares the regret at the loss of inherited values. He has been praised by the critics Ashley Brown, Monroe Spears, and Lewis P. Simpson, as an important transitional writer. And according to contemporary writers Madison Smartt Bell, William Hoffman, and Lee Smith, his novels are lessons in the possibility of the immediate. As the essays in this collection show, Madison Jones has a dark view of human experience, but also self-knowledge and compassion. He has succeeded in finding his own voice and has created an emphatically moral world that transcends its Southern particulars. Essays by Jewel Spears Brooker, George Garrett, Richard Gray, Jan Nordby Gretlund, Madison Jones, Lewis A. Lawson, David Madden, and Hans H. Skei. Plus interviews and a Madison Jones bibliography.

Over recent decades the concept of literacy has been an important field of discussion in Medieval and Early Modern studies, and questions concerning the uses of literacy, the number of literates, differing writing systems, modes of communication and the interaction between orality and literacy have occupied researchers from various disciplines. The aim of this volume is to introduce Scandinavian literacy to the international field of research. On the one hand, to provide a basis that can contribute to a better general understanding of literacy. Because of the volume's interdisciplinary approach, a relatively wide range of material is invoked to illuminate the subject matter.

In 1998 the Middle East Conflict celebrated its 50th anniversary and now, eight years later, no final general settlement is in sight. Despite peace agreements between Israel and two Arab countries in the nineteen nineties (Egypt and Jordan) and a part-settlement with the Palestinian authorities or PLO in 1993, violence reached its highest level in 2002/2004, and has still not abated, albeit decreased recently. The withdrawal of the Israeli forces and settlers from occupied Gaza is a step in the right direction, but too many uncertainties remain. Just now the political situation is confused in Israel. The Middle East Conflict gives a clear-cut study of the conflict from 1948-2005. It should be fairly easy for readers without any special foreknowledge to read if they have a keen interest in political matters and want to understand this long drawn conflict that over the years developed into what the author describes as war. May be more dramatic than necessary, but the conflict has had a serious repercussions anywhere in the area conflict -- including a damaging civil war in Lebanon -- and also in a larger area than the one this study outs its focus on, namely the direct involved neighbours of Israel and the Jewish nation itself.
