Maya Yoga is the title of Keith Dowman's translation of "finding Comfort and Ease in Enchantment" written by the inimitable Longchen Rabjampa. In the Nyingmapa School of Tibetan Buddhism, this text is considered second to none in its power to evoke the nature of the nondual reality of the Dzogchen view. With poetic mastery, Longchenpa provides the precepts that can instantly illuminate the buddha-reality that is our ordinary everyday experience. He asserts that we are presently under the spell of magical illusion and that by recognizing it we are instanteneously released from a conceptual cage into enchanting reality which is pure pleasure itself. That reality is maya, apparent yet absent, and the recognition of it in that state of natural relaxation is maya yoga. In this renowned atiyoga manual, we find the key to the natural mystical state that Dzogchen, the Great Perfection, constantly evokes.

Ghandruk is a village in the Annapurna region of Nepal and is on one of the country\'s main trekking routes. It is in the centre of the traditional homeland of the Gurung or Tamu people, a Buddhist Tibeto-Burmese people who originated somewhere in Mongolia, spent many centuries wandering around present day Tibet and China, and finally established themselves south of the Annapurna mountain range about 1,500 years ago. Tamu men have long been recognised for their courage, bravery and integrity and were recruited into the British Gurhka Army and also into the Indian Army. They have won many distinctions for outstanding service and acts of self-sacrifice well beyond the normal call of duty. While men were off earning a living away from home, the women had to be equally strong, bringing up families, farming the land and keeping the home together. They are a strong, resilient and intelligent people. Over the years other groups have come to live in Ghandruk, bringing their skills as blacksmiths, tailors and more recently tourist lodge owners. This is the story of the village, of its people, their ancestry, traditions and present day lives.e is really like for the people of the village.

This book was first published in French in 1981 by CNRS, National Centre for Scientific Research (France), under the title L'Homme et la maison en Himalaya. It was subsequently published in English in 1991 by Sterling Publishers, in New Delhi. It seems to us--the author and the publisher--that the earthquakes that struck Nepal in April and May 2015 might be an appropriate opportunity, for obvious reasons, to republish it. These massive seismic events, along with the ineluctable effect of modernity and globalization, will no doubt sound the death knell for a large part of Nepalese vernacular architecture in the affected areas. In fact, this vernacular regional architecture, mostly farmhouses constructed by local builders with locally available materials, without using the services of a professional architect, is likely to gradually disappear.

Volume Two of this collection expands on Volume One with a series of longer, in-depth teachings by Khenchen Appey Rinpoche on five essential subjects: 1) a commentary to inspire faith, based on verses in praise of the Buddha's immeasurable qualities from Sakya Pandita's Clarifying the Sages Intent; 2) oral instructions based on Candrakirti's Entering the Middle Way, offering a practical understanding of the Mahayana path as a whole; 3) a commentary on the first three chapters of Santideva's The Way of the Bodhisattva, which includes an explanation of the ritual for the bodhicitta vow; 4) a rarely given explanation of Gorampa's profound teaching on dependent arising according to the four philosophical schools of Indian Buddhism, entitled Illumination of Samsara and Nirvana; and 5) a detailed commentary on Samantabhadra's Noble Astirations to Sublime Conduct, as the supreme means of dedication. "The five teachings contained in this book are a testament to the in-depth knowledge and realization that defined Khenchen Appey Rinpoche as one of the most accomplished exponents of the Buddhadharma of our times. His realization of the teachings, along with the logical reasoning and thorough analysis with which he elucidated them. invariably enabled his students to have confidence in their authenticity, as well as earning him their deepest respect and admiration. Over and above being an outstanding practitioner, scholar and teacher, Khenchen Appey was a living example of a Bodhisattva. He was unfalteringly compassionate to all and, in spite of his overwhelming qualities. he always remained humble and unassuming." - from the foreword by His Holiness the 42nd Sakva Trizin Ratna Vajra

A Concise History of the Sakyapa School summarizes the history of that venerable tradition, briefly describing also its scholastic curriculum and even enumerating many of its most prominent branch monasteries. A precious contribution when its author wrote it in the late 1960s, when the Tibetans in Indian exile desperately needed such a historical synopsis, it remains helpful and relevant today.

In Nepal’s Mustang District, on the right bank of the Kali Gandaki river facing the large settlement of Tshug (Chusang), is a low hill known as Gönpa Gang, the “convent ridge.” Standing on the ridge are the remains of a Buddhist site, Künzang Chöling. Until recently, nothing was known about the building beyond the fact that it had once been a nunnery, and it is hard now to imagine that a local ruler in the 17th century, awed by its majestic proportions and its exquisite paintings, exclaimed that it was “the jewel in the crown of the realm.” This book brings to light a forgotten gem of Nepal’s architectural and artistic heritage, while the archives of the community offer a window onto the lives of the lama who built it “as a blessing for the land,” and of the nuns for whom it was a centre of spiritual activity for almost three centuries.

The teachings of Bon are organized into nine ways, or nine vehicles to enlightenment, the ninth and highest of which is known as Dzogchen, "the Great Perfection." Among the four principal traditions of Bonpo Dzogchen, the oral tradition from the country of Zhangzhung is of unique importance because it never became a Terma, or hidden treasure text rediscovered long after its original composition. The precepts of Dzogchen were said to have originated with the Primordial Buddha, Kuntu Zangpo, passing down at first through the Direct Mind-to-Mind Transmission and then later through the Oral Transmission of the Twenty-Four Masters, all of whom attained the Rainbow Body of Light. In Zhang-zhung in the 7th century, these precepts were communicated by the last in this line of masters to his disciple Tapihritsa, who subsequently attained Buddha enlightenment through the practice of vision, or Thodgal.

This book is an attempt to elucidate some aspects of the political life of the Fifth Dalai Lama (1617-1682) who established the Ganden Phodrang, his government in the 17th century in Tibet, and especially his relations with the first three administrators (Desi). For the elucidation the book draws mainly from the English translation of the autobiography of the Fifth Dalai Lama (The Illusive Play, Serindia Publications 2014) and contains a vivid account of the lives of the first three administrators of the Fifth Dalai Lama that had remained until now very little known. The author's historical account of the lives of these monk officials is based on the personal observations made by the Fifth Dalai Lama in his autobiography. Desi Sonam Rabten, the first administrator, the architect of the Gelug rise, was doctrinaire and sectarian. He was succeeded,* Depa Norbu, next of kin, who rebelled against the Ganden Phodrang government. However, Desi Trinle Gyatso, the third one, was a faithful follower of the Fifth Dalai Lama's non-, sectarian ecumenical policy.
