'Folklore and Fables' is a collection of articles on his beloved Blades, by Sheffield United supporters' liaison officer, club historian and 'encyclopedia of Blades knowledge', John Garrett. A lifelong Blade, whose grandfather first watched the Blades in 1892, John has worked at Bramall Lane for over two decades and began writing his popular, and award-winning, 'Folklore and Fables' feature for United's matchday programme almost 10 years ago. This book is a compilation of his best work, giving his inimitable take on life at Bramall Lane - featuring his family history, music, holidays abroad, club legends and, rather occasionally, football...

In 1968, Yorkshire County Cricket Club won a record 29th outright County Championship title. Blessed with the talents of Brian Close, Fred Trueman and Geoffrey Boycott, they dominated their opponents through sheer desire, skill and belief. It was a golden era for the club, and no one saw it coming to an end. But over the next few years, everything changed. Yorkshire's star players departed and their rivals benefited from the introduction of overseas professionals like Garry Sobers, Viv Richards and Clive Rice. As they decided only to hire those born within the county, Yorkshire struggled to compete with their contemporaries and became one of the worst-performing teams in the land. It was a dire time for the club. But when a young Sachin Tendulkar arrived at Headingley in April 1992, a revolution began. Through his talent and personality, Yorkshire's first overseas player modernised a failing institution and gained experience that helped him become the greatest international batsman of his generation. This is the story of how a promising 19-year-old became an Honorary Tyke... and, in the process, changed the history of England's most successful club.

He is the larger-than-life figure who bounced back from rejection at 16 and graduated from parks pitches to become a Premier League goalkeeper, and later represent his country. Paddy Kenny's career was certainly not straightforward... just like his life. In his autobiography, Kenny lifts the lid on his time on and off the football field - including dressing-room rucks, being beaten for the Premier League's most famous goal and having his eyebrow bitten off in a curry house, just days before he faced Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney and Manchester United. This is Kenny's story... and the gloves are well and truly off.

By the time Dave 'Harry' Bassett swept through the doors in 1988 as the new manager, Sheffield United was a club going nowhere. Crowds were low, money was lower and any optimism amongst the fanbase had long since been spent up. Things got worse before they got better, with the Blades relegated in Bassett's first season in charge before he really put his stamp on the club. What followed was a rollercoaster ride of back-to-back promotions, against-the-odds survivals and a remarkable era of success that means its main protagonists are still fondly remembered at Bramall Lane to this day. For the first time, using exclusive interviews and extensive research, Bassett's Blades charts the inside story of that era through the games, characters and stories that define a generation.

In May 1990 the unthinkable happened and Sheffield Wednesday were relegated to the second division of English football for the first time in six seasons. Ron Atkinson's talented squad - blessed with the likes of David Hirst, Carlton Palmer, Roland Nilsson and John Sheridan - could go one of two ways; stick together or fall apart. A year later they were back in the big time and holders of the League Cup having beaten Sir Alex Ferguson's Manchester United at Wembley. The collection of huge characters formed one of the most iconic sides in the club's rich history. For the very first time, '91 tells the inside story of that incredible season from those that were there; from training ground crisis talks to terrific goals, laughs, tears and beers on the open-top bus.

Imperfect 10 is a searingly honest account of the life of a footballing genius, whose character and personality are worlds apart from the on-field extrovert who thrilled the crowds. Tony Currie, the former Watford, Sheffield United, Leeds United and QPR player with outrageous skills and the confidence to sit on the ball during a game or blow kisses to his adoring fans, was so shy that the avoidance of any kind of conflict or facing up to challenging decisions became his natural modus operandi. Sometimes it is almost impossible to believe that the two sides of the man lovingly known as TC belong to the same person. His private life fell apart, there was a damning relationship at international level and the team trophies he craved eluded him. But he had the crowd on his side throughout. In his autobiography, Currie remembers the magic moments but also the crippling self-doubt and dwindling self-esteem that brought him to his knees as he drifted towards an inevitable retirement and life after football. If there is a happy ending, it is in the acclaim he still commands from fans at Sheffield United, the club he spent most time with. They initially rescued him, and attracted him back up north for an eventual re-connection with the Blades. Tony Currie is a living legend who almost didn't have the will to hang around to see it.

As the final whistle went in Sheffield Wednesday's play-off first leg against Peterborough United, it felt like their promotion hopes had been blown, too. The Owls were four goals down, their fan base was in pieces and from a position of seemingly-unsurpassable strength just a few weeks earlier, their world had caved in on them. What followed, over the course of 17 days in May, was unlike anything ever seen before; one of the most remarkable comeback stories in sport, punctuated by breathless late goals, never-say-die spirit and jubilation untold. Told by those with unrivalled access to the campaign's highs and lows, and recording the journeys of those who made it happen, this is the remarkable inside story of the Owls' 2022/23 season - from their pre-season trip to Portugal to club-record runs, from 96 points to 90+8 and from their gut-punch fall, to the greatest play-off campaign in football history.

Putting on a Show is the story of Chesterfield FC's remarkable 2023/24 promotion season. Written by the Derbyshire Times' Spireites writer Liam Norcliffe, this is a detailed account of Chesterfield's record-breaking return to the EFL after six seasons in non-league which saw them almost relegated to regional football and close to going bust. Featuring interviews with players, coaching staff and other key behind-the-scenes personnel, the story also covers Paul Cook's sensational return to the club, how he rebuilt the squad and how the Spireites recovered from losing the previous season's play-off final on penalties to break records galore and storm to the title - all while playing some of the best football the fifth tier has ever seen.

The conclusion of the 2024/25 football season marks a full century since Sheffield United FC last won a major trophy. In the intervening period, 43 other clubs have won the league, the FA Cup or the League Cup, and yet more have played in European competitions. Sheffield United have done none of these things. Winning isn't Everything seeks an explanation as to why United were so good in their first 36 years but have suffered a somewhat unfulfilled century ever since. The book delves into diverse features such as player recruitment, managerial appointments, finances, strategic planning, governance and the composition of the board of directors. Other paths of inquiry question less obvious possible causes: local religious leanings, geography and topography, regional politics and just plain old bad luck.

Carlos Had a Dream charts the remarkable Carlos Carvalhal era at Sheffield Wednesday, which saw him become the first foreign manager in the Owls' long history when he arrived in the summer of 2015. In the months that followed the Portuguese transformed the culture at Hillsborough, turning Wednesday into promotion contenders with a style of football that wowed Owls fans and took them as close to a return to the Premier League as they have been since the turn of the Millennium. It was early in the Dejphon Chansiri ownership era and the Owls played football that reignited belief amongst a fanbase and carried Wednesday to within touching distance of Premier League glory - before it all gradually fell apart. This is the story of that period, told by a man who was at the coalface for every cough and splutter.

'This is History' is a deep dive into the rise of Oasis, built around one of the world's most comprehensive music memorabilia archives. In April 2016, as they slumped to their lowest finish since 1983 and anger turned to apathy, Sheffield United was a club on the floor. A year later, they were reborn; champions of the division, history-makers on the rise again. And the man who dragged out of the doldrums was boyhood fan, former ballboy and player and now manager, Chris Wilder. His story is probably as close to a fairytale as modern football allows. Fifteen years after managing in a Sheffield Sunday League, Wilder has established a reputation as one of English football's brightest talents after tasting success, often against a destabilising backdrop of financial difficulty, at every club he has worked at; including one which had no footballs. Featuring contributions from players, friends and acquaintances who know him well, this book explores that apprenticeship and then how Wilder turned around a sleeping giant, transformed their fortunes on and off the field and reconnected club and supporters. Fans hail him as 'one of their own' and under Wilder, United are united again.
