We still do not know the causes of either main form of colitis, but we are getting closer. We do know, however, a lot about the changes that occur in the bowel of people with colitis, and how to return them to normal. It should be only a matter of time before we know why these changes happen, as well as what has happened. Colitis simply means 'inflammation of the large bowel' (the colon). Doctors use the word in only two contexts, ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease, known collectively to doctors as 'inflammatory bowel disease'. People may also link irritable bowel syndrome and diverticular disease to colitis. It is often difficult to persuade people with irritable bowel syndrome that this is what they have, that it is not a true 'colitis' and they do not have something more serious, such as inflammatory bowel disease or cancer. Most of this book is devoted to ulcerative colitis and Crohn's, it would not be complete without chapters on how to distinguish these inflammatory bowel diseases from irritable bowel, diverticular disease and colon cancer, the symptoms of which can mimic those of colitis.

Good, restful, sleep is an important part of your total health, sufferers from sleep problems would give a lot for a good night's rest. There is no uniform pattern to sleep problems, a great deal depends on an individual's make-up. A poor night's sleep is often due to the fast, stressful pace of life that has now become normal, positive steps to manage stress need to be developed or a tense, wound-up state of mind results. Sleep problems include difficulties in switching off, frequent waking and a sense of being unrefreshed on waking. Other contributory factors include over-reliance on caffeine, alcohol or chemical sedatives to help us unwind. Bad working habits play a large part in preventing sound sleep. These can slowly creep up on us until they reach a problematic level before we realise that something must be done to rectify the situation. Why are we surprised that we find it difficult to switch off when trying to sleep? This book contains positive strategies to solve these problems and break the negative cycle. The major systems of alternative medicine included in this book have a different perspective to conventional medicine on the issue of sleep problems.

Imagine someone is trying to drill a hole in your head, right through one of your eyes. Imagine your stomach is heaving, your sight disturbed by weird effects of light and shade. Imagine there are pins and needles in your fingers and toes, and your brain is so confused that you can't get out the words you want to say. Imagine you have migraine! That is an extreme description of what it is like to have a migraine attack, but a sufferer will recognise some of the symptoms. Even the "lucky" ones who only suffer from sickness and a throbbing, one-sided headache, that can be enough to incapacitate them for days on end. This book is aimed at anyone who feels that conventional medicine isn't the whole answer, it can of course be used in conjunction with conventional medical treatment. This book looks at the dietary component that bedevils many migraine sufferers' lives. It's not just a question of cheese, red wine and chocolate -- there can be a much more complex pattern of food intolerances and sensitivities, if these can be identified real improvement can be achieved without large doses of prescription drugs.
