The Great Search recognises the widespread collapse of religion as we have known it. There is a vast diaspora of people living in religious exile from their inherited traditions of faith, and many of them are in search of deeper meaning and a truer relationship with Earth and one another. This book explores the wisdom of nine prophetic teachers from the past, some of whom anticipated this era of religious exile, and all of whom addressed the spiritual yearnings of this time when the very future of humanity's relationship with Earth is imperilled.Part of the widespread spiritual search of today is the yearning to know the divine, not just to know about the divine. It is the desire to ground spiritual wisdom in experience rather than in statements of faith. It is the conviction that the light of God shines in the body of Earth and in one another, and deep within us all.The author’s hope is that by turning again to Earth and our true spiritual depths we will find the strength, the imagination and the vision for healing, and a new sense of home.

Dazzling Darkness is a true story about searching for one’s authentic self in the company of the Living God. Rachel Mann has died many ‘deaths’ in the process, not the least of which was a change of sex, as well as coming to terms with chronic illness and disability.Through these experiences she has discovered that darkness is as much a positive place as a negative one, inhabited by the Living God – the Dark God, the Hidden God. This is the God that many of us, because we try to make our lives safe and comfortable, are too afraid to meet. This is the God who is most alive in those things we commonly associate with the Dark – failure, loss and brokenness. The Christian church has legitimated certain ways of talking about God – male, fatherly, monarchical and so on. Many believe these descriptors tell the exhaustive truth about God. In accepting the complexity of her sexuality and identity, Rachel Mann has been able to explore with a greater freedom what God might look like to an ‘unconventional creature’ like her. This second edition of Rachel’s passionate, celebrated and nuanced book has been thoroughly revised and extended, with new chapters which re-examine what it means to live with ill-health and being trans nearly a decade on from the original publication of Dazzling Darkness.Rachel Mann is an Anglican priest, poet, scholar and broadcaster. The author of eleven books, her work has been shortlisted for the international Michael Ramsey Prize, and has been called ‘exceptional’ (Rowan Williams) and ‘astonishing’ (Michael Symmons Roberts). She regularly broadcasts on BBC Radio 2 and 4.

A personal perspective on the Middle East is offered by the author of this autobiography, who recounts her experiences over a 40-year period as a doctor working in Israel, Lebanon and the occupied territories. It is an uncompromising account of life and politics as viewed by an outsider. Runa Mackay gives her own views of political situations such as the Six Days War, the birth of the Intifada, Iraq's invasion of Kuwait and the Israeli deportation of Palestinians living in the occupied territories, as seen through the eyes of a doctor attending the victims of war and exile.

Ghillean Prance, Director of Kew Gardens, applies his knowledge as botanist and scientist and his deeply held Christian beliefs to the basic questions that surround our destruction of the earth and what we can do to change course.

Specifically designed for congregational use, this contains 255 songs for straightforward arrangements, either four-part harmony or with piano accompaniment.

Biblical songs of justice, World Church songs of protest and praise and songs of experience from late 20th century Britain.

This series of 40 visionary paintings, poems and reflections highlighting issues of climate justice and asking 'How can we bring about positive change together?' was first shown at COP26 by Tearfund. Climate change has been called the single greatest issue facing humanity and this little book offers us much-needed inspiration, challenge and hope for the future. Post-COP26 it's a rallying call for people to keep on using their creative energies in the work of turning the fate of planet Earth around, before it's too late.

Poverty robs people of their dignity, agency and power. Church Action on Poverty and its partners work to build a movement in which people and communities can reclaim those essential aspects of life. This anthology of stories, prayers, reflections and liturgy is published to coincide with the organisation's 40th anniversary and to inspire continuing work towards those ends.

Jesus unflinchingly walked the road that he had chosen, knowing its cost. In our lives we find ourselves on roads not always of our choosing, often puzzling, sometimes full of light when faith seems easy, sometimes darkened and troubled. As we journey through the events of Holy Week we find Jesus sharing that human perplexity and struggle, always fully engaged, determined to accompany us on the journey that lies ahead, giving us confidence to pray and act for the needs of those close to us and for the needs of the world.Janet Killeen uses a variety of perspectives to get close to the events of Holy Week. Some of the events are far from holy: treacherous, hostile and increasingly isolating for the Man at their heart, who comes to us in his isolation, in confrontation and rejection, in the sorrow and anguish he experienced, so that we might never be alone.Janet Killeen studied English and American literature, and taught in a London comprehensive school for over thirty-five years. She has published poems, short stories and two novels, and is a regular contributor to Wild Goose books.

Iona Abbey Kitchen, run by two cooks and powered by volunteers, provides nourishing food for the Iona Community’s weekly guests. It aims to serve tasty, colourful, healthy, mainly vegetarian meals, many of which are reflected in this cookbook where Anja Jardine, Abbey Cook for over 17 years, has collected people’s favourites. Easy to cook at home, these recipes won’t just fill a hole in your stomach, but will also nourish your soul. Includes (often with vegan, gluten-free and dairy-free alternatives) soups, salads, numerous vegetarian main courses, fish and seafood, meat, sandwich spreads, bread, sweet treats, drinks and – as many Abbey guests will affirm – the best porridge ever. ‘What I can do here is draw attention to the way Anja writes about food, with a mixture of enjoyment and ethical discernment. She draws on her own childhood on the other side of the Iron Curtain, to remind us that food should never be taken for granted. In Britain now, an increasing number of people are living in poverty – with poor housing, low income, unaffordable fuel bills and more and more families going hungry. The cheapest food on offer in the supermarkets is often the least nutritious. But who can blame those who buy it? So, living with austerity that’s the result of government policies, one reaction is rage at unfairness – but another (which you will find here) is a celebration of simple nutritious food which is affordable.’Jan Sutch Pickard from the introduction

‘My trip is this teabag, giving up its loveThis perforated planet, in my steaming mug’ Every day is a poem. From the first cup of tea in the morning as the recycling lorry trundles down the street to those final random thoughts before we drop off at night. As the children grow up and someone we love dies; as we rage against life and love brings us home. ‘Dear Life, Dear All, Dear Me, Dear YouA prayer, a sign, some shy synchronicitySome days all we ask for is some kind of clue’ Martin Wroe lives with Meg, a painter, in North London where their devotion to each new day begins with tea. At one time on staff at The Independent and later The Observer and a former chair of the Greenbelt Arts Festival, Martin is an associate member of the Iona Community and a regular contributor to BBC Radio 4’s Thought for the Day.

A practical leader’s guide to delivering art and wellbeing sessions to the community. In a gentle and wise way Shaeron Caton Rose has brought together her wealth of experience in community art to offer us this practical guide to leading groups. Behind the clear step-by-step instructions that take us through leading a group – from making an agreement to reflecting on the process – she unlocks joyful possibilities of discovery. She encourages us to ‘have a go’ at creative activities, but also to sit within the process so that what the art is revealing to us is shared and loved. Shaeron shows us how to slow down, how to value our bodies, how to pay attention to the world around us, how to be calm and positive and also to recognise and value our brokenness and incompleteness. Using inexpensive resources and practical suggestions, this book is a gift from Shaeron’s treasure trove of ideas, taking us to a place of playful adventure and profound transformation.Rev Dr Barbara Glasson, former President of the British Methodist Conferenceand team-leader at Touchstone, Bradford This is a daring book. It dares us to help people engage with the deep spirituality that comes from getting your hands dirty. Art is not just an ‘add on’ to life. It is essential to helping us articulate where we came from, who we are and who we hope to be. Art ‘interrupts us’, slows us down and helps us to notice something new in the world around us and, perhaps most importantly, in ourselves. Shaeron Caton Rose shows us, with simple step-by-step methods, how to make ‘something new’ happen in our hearts and in our imagination. This book asks you to do something different and enjoy reaping the rewards. Try it. I dare you.Chris Howson, artist and Chaplain to the University of Sunderland

An Advent Calendar with a difference - in the form of a book. Instead of cardboard cut-outs the 'windows' we open are word-pictures and stories from the Land called Holy. Readers can respond with prayer.

These poems were written in a disturbing and troubling context – an emotional time of absence and loss which also proved to be an opportunity to search and remember. Out of the shadows, the darkness, and often the injustice, the need to lament and mourn goes hand in hand with the special significance of small moments and ordinary occasions.   So the poems attempt to express the poet’s calling and the value of poetry and creativity as they contemplate moments of loss and joy, both in my own life and in the lives of others near and far. And above all else Wintersong is a book with a longing to keep hope alive.More than human wisdom, looking is the poet’s charge:to mark and mourndeath and loss;to not let things go byunnoticed; to respondto the daily miracles, the musicof wind in the trees, across stones, in the grass, the shimmer of the willow –how I see your facein the darkness of absence.(‘From within the dark times’)

Inspiration for each day of Lent, Holy Week, Advent, Christmas and beyond, including short passages from scripture, reflective poems, suggestions for meditation or action, and short prayers.

A social and economic history of Lowland Scotland over the last 300 years as told through the story of the author's family.

Every human day is freighted with baffling questions. About pain and love, about joy and purpose. In an age when we're shy of certainty and suspicious of authority, many of us no longer turn to the great houses of faith for inspiration. But for all we've let go, there are good habits to hold onto. Drawing on wisdom from the ages and insights from the everyday, this humane collection of daily readings is the ideal travelling companion on the bumpy road to peace, love and understanding.

A resource which aims to help individuals, pairs or groups embody the season of Lent through the intersection of classical Hatha Yoga practice and Christian spirituality. The eight sessions can be practised on a chair only or on an exercise mat indoors or outdoors.  At its core, this book is a holistic exploration of Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 which is full of universal opposites, paradoxes and dualisms: ‘A time to be born and a time to die … a time for love and a time for hate.’ Lent is the time when many Christians focus on Jesus’ confrontation with the oppositional forces of good and evil in the desert, as well as his last days leading to his crucifixion. The author believes that mind-body dualism in any sector is dangerous, but in religious communities it is toxic. ‘In our digital age, this is the season for embodiment,’ she says. ‘The holistic modality of yoga offers a toolbox for more embodied wholeness, unity and peace – moment by moment … Attentiveness to ourselves as autonomous subjects rather than objects can result in more compassion, empathy and wellbeing. For me, Jesus-centred embodiment is the way towards better self-care, and improved relationships with others, the Earth and all living things, as well as deeper intimacy with the Source of all breath.’ Pauline Steenbergen is an Associate Member of the Iona Community, a Church of Scotland minister, a Spiritual Director, an ecumenical pioneer and a Yoga Scotland teacher. Spiral bound for ease of use.

Preston, Urzula Glienecke, Jan Sutch Pickard, Stef Benstead and Church Action on Poverty, Alex and Jo Clare-Young, Janet Killeen, Janet Lees, John McCall, Peter Millar, and other members, associates and friends of the Iona Community. Someone once said that what they appreciate about books like this is all the different voices. Reading collections like this, they said, helped them to feel part of ‘a little community of hope’.  May this book accompany you on your journey through Holy Week and beyond.  May it help you to feel part of a community of hope. ‘And now I would like to invite you to imagine hard ground – a pavement or concrete. Or dry desert floor, cracked and hard. Imagine it in as much detail as you can: how it looks, the colours, how it would feel beneath your feet or if you touched it with your palm. Maybe imagine how it would smell. Then imagine a plant breaking through the hard ground …’  (Urzula Glienecke)
