SOLJER SOLJER is a story based on an imaginary infantry battalion of the Third Gorkha Rifles - the sixth battalion. The composition, training, camaraderie, duties in all the other infantry battalions of our Army is almost the same except that certain customs undergo a change as they adopt to the ethnicity of the troops in that Regiment. So the visible changes would be the manner of the battle cry, salutation, greeting, decorum in festivity with the troops, or ceremonials in the Officer's mess.

The present book is a humble endeavour made by the author to explore and bring to the fore various implications of Intellectual Property Rights which are in conformity with TRIPS Agreement in developing countries in general and India in particular. It has addressed various concerns of developing countries which must be taken into consideration taking into account their unique socio and economic paradigm. This book has coalesced heterogeneous elements of TRIPS, IPR, Sustainable Human Development and public interest into a perfect synthetic whole. This book also reviews some of the seminal impacts of the TRIPS Agreement on issues such as innovation, dissemination of technology, access to health care, development and use of biotechnology, and functionalism of multilateral environmental agreements, with special reference to Convention on Biological Diversity

In the decades prior to 1991, India followed a highly statist and interventionist development policies leading to a period of a severely distorted production structure. This culminated in too deep economic crises at the outset of the ninety nineties. Faced with a severe balance of payments crisis, India entered into an IMF influenced structural adjustment program. In addition to the conventional expenditure switching and reducing policies, as part of the IMF agreement, a range of far-reaching economic policy reforms was launched in July 1991 in the external, industrial, financial and public sectors. Although the reforms mainly dealt with industry and trade policies, these policies do have its impact on the external sector. It is in the context of this that the present study examines the effect of the reforms on the external sector variables like exports, imports, terms of trade etc. The book is divided in to eight chapters begin with introduction, survey of theories of international trade and the impact of reforms on selected macroeconomic and external sector variables. In the subsequent chapters country group wise and commodity group wise, export growth and instability has been examined. Thereafter, the pattern and behaviour of Indian import were studied with respect to pre and post reform period. The trend as well as instability in the terms of trade faced by developing country like India in the liberalised regime was also examined. Lastly, the study has come out with a conclusion that the liberalisation has allowed the Indian economy to attain a higher degree of integration with the world but at the same time the economy has also became more vulnerable to external factors.

The revival of interest in Gandhi's studies in recent years is phenomenon. This revival centers on Gandhi's life and his thoughts which is not only unique in the history but also useful for the generations to come. This book takes a critical stand on the contemporary debate which wants to see Gandhi as postmodern. To contest those for whom Gandhi is a postmodern thinker has been main problem of the work. To resolve the problem has not been very easy task because while pursuing the research involved, it has been realized in so many places that there are postmodern resemblances in Gandhi's philosophy. Hence, it has been a very problematic journey. But various hypothesis of the research problem became useful yardsticks in resolving those apprehensions. This work is divided into seven different chapters excluding introduction and conclusion. In the first chapter Contesting Postmodern Gandhi an illustrative attempt has been made to make readers familiar with the problem as well as objective of the work. In the second chapter Gandhi and Modern Civilization an elaborate discussion has been given to clarify that Gandhi's critique of modern civilization is different from postmodern critique of modernity. The third chapter Some Reflections on Postmodern Methodology is written to clarify methodological stand taken by both Gandhi as well as postmodernists. In fourth chapter Contesting Postmodern Notion of Truth through Gandhi's Satya a painstaking effort has been made to present the core of Gandhi's philosophy (Truth) at length. Surprisingly, both Gandhi as well as postmodern studies is sharing their notion on truth but Gandhi's truth and postmodern truth are completely different from each other. Chapter fifth Contesting Postmodern Localism through Gandhi's Swaraj & Swadeshi emphasizes that Gandhi's ideas of Swaraj & Swadeshi are dissimilar to postmodernist discourse of localism. Chapter sixth is entitled as Gandhi vs. Postmodernity on the Question of Identity. This chapter shows that Gandhi's individual and postmodern subject are poles apart from each other. In seventh chapter Gandhi and Different Facets of Feminism a serious discussion has been made to present that apparently Gandhi's idea on women may seem to be identical with different facets of feminism but ultimate objective of Gandhi's studies are completely different from feminist goal. In the concluding observation a final effort has been made with the help of detailed studies which are scattered here and there in this volume to reject the claim that Gandhi is a postmodern thinker. I have strongly raised my disagreement with the postmodern Gandhi. I have made the stand that neither of Gandhi's philosophy can be categorized as postmodern. Either it is truth/non-violence, Swaraj-Swadeshi, or his idea of self or modern civilization; they all are developed from different perspective. It is blunder to say that Gandhi was a postmodern. This work strongly discards those who have claimed that Gandhi is a postmodern thinker.

The Pharmaceutical Industry in India has been a success story for the development of an Indigenous and self-reliant industry. The pharmaceutical sector of Indian economy is an imperative module of health system and planners fittingly acknowledged its role by awarding it the 1970 Patent Act. However the launching of economic reforms in 1990s, creation of WTO and implementation of TRIPS agreements in 2005 altered the economic paradigm of Indian Pharmaceutical Industry. The Act encouraged significant numbers of foreign pharmaceutical companies to participate in the Indian market and Indian Pharmaceutical Industry entered into a new era of competition and consolidation. The present work is the outcome of author's many years of research and an endeavor has been made to cover the latest pharmaceutical issues holistically and analytically. The book deals in burning subjects like Pharmaceutical R&D, Pharmaceutical FDI, Pharmaceutical Prices and problem of accessibility and impact of TRIPS on Indian Pharmaceutical Industry.

There is a general thinking that the benefits of industrial development have not spread uniformly across the length and breadth of the country. It is in this context that industrialization and territorial development has acquired a significant topic of discussion. It has also influenced various policies decisions of the Government. In India both central and state government have devised policies for territorial development through industrialization with the objective of reducing regional imbalances. However, a significant feature of industrial development in India is that it has concentrated in few states like Gujarat, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, where industrial growth rate is high. Further, even within the advanced states, some districts are industrially backward districts. As a consequence there has been an intra-state disparities. It is against this backdrop that the present study focuses on territorial disparity in industrial development in the state of Gujarat, particularly in the post reforms period. The study attempts to examine the effects of reforms on industrial development in the state of Gujarat, in terms of growth of industries, employment, output, value added and investment in manufacturing sector. The study has been sub divided into eight chapters. It is evident from the study that the reform process have to some extent reduce territorial industrial imbalance in the state of Gujarat.

The manifesto is new not only as such but above all because it is to be worked out, constructed and possibly turned into an action by the reader. Although the book is not morally and politically neutral because of some stands that I take and a selective huge review of issues and materials of which some are hard to come by, all the essential choices and solutions belong to the reader. Nothing is given on the platter let alone on the silver platter. It is readers manifesto. Therefore, the book is not an expose calling for a certain action or a collection of principles, programs and initiatives to be followed but rather a broad choice of issues, circumstances and aspects facilitating and promoting readers thinking processes and conclusions. Consequently, the readers task is immense and it amounts to a number of answers to a summarized question : How is it possible to inject into the world substantial does of change to see it a more harmonious, friendly and equitable place to live in .

India's foreign policy's approach to integrate the North East region with our neighbours does pose various challenges on account of illegal migration, drug trafficking, illegal trade, trade in narcotics and arms trafficking and insurgency related problems impacting decisively the political and security scenario of the region in particular and socio-economic and cultural fabric of the people of the region in general and thus threatening India's security and strategic interests. North-East India that comprises of eight states today namely; Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura is relevant both strategically as well as economically from the perspective of Indian foreign policy. The region shares territorial contiguity and cultural, ethnic, linguistic commonalities with South Asian neighbours- Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal in particular. For example, the region shares 98% of its border with Bangladesh adjoining with Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram and Tripura. Bhutan borders with Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim. Nepal is adjoined to Sikkim. The North-East region, thus, serves as a gateway for India's foreign policy towards South Asia in particular and East and South East Asia in general. It is in this context that the North East India becomes relevant for India's foreign policy towards SAARC, India's Look East Policy, Bay of Bengal Initiative and Mekong Delta Initiative. The political, security, social and economic developments in the North East have wider and decisive repercussions for India's relations with the countries of South, East and South East Asia. The direction, dynamics and dimensions of India's foreign policy towards South, East and South East Asia determine the parameters of political, security, social and economic developments in the region of North East India. Thus while North East India integrates India's foreign policy with our neighboring countries and economic associations and groupings like SAARC and ASEAN, our foreign policy, on the other hand, provides immense economic, investment and commercial opportunities for the region and the people of North East India having a great bearing on people's economic and social conditions with a far reaching impact on politico-security scenario of the region. Thus security of the North-East India determines the security of India as the region is so strategically located. It is in this context that the study of India`s Foreign Policy towards South Asia occupies an important place from the prospective of the North-East India. The success of India's foreign policy towards South Asia would depend on the nature of security scenario in the North-East as the region would play an important role as a gateway for India's foreign policy towards South Asia.

Human rights are derived from the dignity and worth inherent in the human person. Human rights and fundamental freedoms have been reiterated in the Universal declaration of Human Rights, 1948. Democracy, development and respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms are inter-dependent and have mutual reinforcement. The human rights for women, including girl child are, therefore, inalienable, integral and an indivisible part of universal human rights. The full development of personality and fundamental freedoms and equal participation by women in political, social, economic and cultural life are concomitants for national development, social and family stability and growth-cultural, social and economical. All forms of discrimination on grounds of gender is violative of fundamental freedoms and human rights. If human rights need to have genuine meaning, they must be correlated to public involvement, and this participation should be preceded by empowerment of the people. A sense of empowerment necessitates a sense of dignity, self-worth and the ability to ask questions with a spirit of legal entitlements and political consciousness based on rights. A process of political empowerment and a sense of rights empower citizens to participate in the public sphere. The splendour of human rights has to be maintained with nobility and glory. There cannot be any wearing down of values, deterioration of quality or any cobwebs in the procedure. In the pages of the book Author makes the courts speak on every aspect of the Human Rights under a proper subject heading and thus provides useful and faithful guideposts for the weary wayfarer who is always in a bit of hurry travelling on the long and arduous path of legal research. The book is of course a Good Professional Tool. The beauty of this book is that it will be of good use to one and all, whether it is student, novice or a perfect professional.

This book on 'Environmental Jurisprudence of Courts of India' provides a general overview of the enactments passed by the Indian Parliament for environmental protection such as the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974, the Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1981, the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986 and the Environment (Protection) Rules, 1986, Wild Life (Protection Act), 1972, The Public Liability Insurance Act, (1991), The Biological Diversity Act, 2002, and National Environment Policy 2006. The Book discusses in detail the approach of the Indian Judiciary in development, protection and conservation of environment in India. It also sheds light on how the Apex Court has developed a unique Environmental Jurisprudence in India by evolving several principles and Doctrines from time to time in order to harmonize the 'right to development' and the 'right to environment'. It addresses evolution and role of Public Interest Litigation in shaping the Environment protection regime in the country and developing new and visionary principles of far reaching consequences such as Sustainable Development, Intergenerational Equity and Intra generational Equity, Polluter Pays Principle, Precautionary Principle, Public trust Doctrine etc.

Human needs are endless. Market is influenced by consumer choice and business activities revolve round consumers. Consumers do not revolve round the market. It was towards the end of 20th Century that more and more goods started coming in the market in closed or sealed packet's, boxes containers etc. the contents of which could not be externally examined and there was likelihood of consumers being deceived and explored by unscrupulous manufacturers and sellers. Therefore, in order to counter these problems and safeguard interests of consumers, there was need for adequate consumer protection legislation and formation of consumer societies. It is in this background that consumerism emerged as a protective umbrella to provide production to consumers against defect in goods and deficiency in service by the service providers. In this book an attempt has been made to enumerate remedies under various Laws for the purpose of Protection of Consumer's right. Since this is an research work so it is not possible to enumerate all the remedies available to Consumers in Law of Land nevertheless some important Laws are mentioned.

Though, it is often believed that those economies which are strongly competitive are able to attract more FDI, but still the relationship between FDI inflows and its impact on competitiveness is an issue of enquiry. Foreign direct investment involves long term relationship reflecting a lasting interest and control of a resident entity in one economy in an enterprise resident in an economy other than that of the foreign direct investor. (World Investment Report, United Nations, 2002). On the other hand, competitiveness is a diverse concept as different economic agencies define competitiveness in different ways. The fundamental principle, which allows the distinction between notions of competitiveness of nations and competitiveness of enterprises, focuses on where the creation of economic value takes place. The economic value is only created within the context of an enterprise, whereas, a nation's environment hinders or supports this process through its policies. The present book is an attempt to provide an insight into impact of FDI on macroeconomic variables having a bearing on competitiveness in the context of Indian economy along with, in the context of Indian firms. Defining competitiveness differently in the context of economy and firms may help us in providing a more comprehensive assessment of impact of foreign direct investment on competitiveness of India.

Indian Infrastructure Sectors including Airports, Roadways, Telecom Sector, Electricity Sector, Ports, SEZs, Natural Gas Sector, etc., had developed a lot in the last 15 years after liberalization took place considering the developments all across the world. A lot of development projects in these sectors are taking place through public -private partnerships. The law relating to development of infrastructure sectors require a new look considering the requirements of regulators in the respective sectors. The regulators are required to balance the strategic dimension of the sectors and also the capital requirement which can lead to development of the sectors. Thus the objectives set out for the readers of the book include, o Creating an insight on development of infrastructure. o Discussing the laws of infrastructure development. o Discussing the control of the regulatory bodies over the development of relevant sectors. Volume 1 deals specifically on balancing the rights of rural persons with development deals relating to Special Economic Zones, issues relating to Land acquisition, rehabilitation and resettlement, etc. There is examination of socio-economic condition and regulatory law of Natural Gas Sector, Telecom Sector, Power Sector, Roadways sector and independence of Airport Economic Regulatory Authority of India.

India has entered the new Millennium without the aura of the much-touted millennium. Indian democracy is shallower and hollower now than a decade ago. If India has to develop into a full-blown democracy, instead of merely gloating over sustaining democracy as its greatest achievement, India ought to strengthen its democratic structures and institutions and make concerted efforts for clean, corruption-free, efficient, secular, transparent and people-centric governance; rapid expansion of civil space for rapid secularisation and democratisation of state and society with secular public institutions mediating between both; equip and energise the judiciary for expeditious justice delivery, especially for the masses who cannot afford to spend and cannot afford to wait; and protect and uplift the weaker sections from poverty, illiteracy, unemployment, and social oppression. As the nation has been caught between the two evils Congress and BJP, team-Anna's anticorruption surge, launching of the Aam Aadmi Party led by Arvind Kejriwal who played a major role in team-Anna, the AAP's stunning performance in the Delhi Assembly elections held in December, all happened in quick succession. The AAP's "model politics" being tried out in Delhi, and expected to be tried out in Parliament through the Lok Sabha elections will decide the nature of the future of Indian democracy. There is much to be said in favour of and expected from the AAP's "alternative politics". For this, understanding the perception of reality is as important as understanding the elusive reality itself. That is best done by identifying the fault lines in governance, the perfidies of the governors, and the pitfalls of the governed, through critiquing the system, seeing it through the common man's "looking glass". This book is a critique of the political scenario prevailing today as seen through the common man's "looking glass".

The Second Volume of Laws of Infrastructure Development deals with requirement of regulatory laws in certain growing infrastructure sectors in India. For example, the Natural Gas sector requires an independent Sectoral Regulator. Presently the regulator which regulates oil also regulate natural gas sector. Indian Retail Sector which is a very important sector does not have a regulatory law or a regulator. There had been controversy in the context of foreign direct investment in the retail sector. Some of the states of India had embraced it, while others are yet to take a decision. The Book looks into the way ahead and the path that is necessary in India to create an ideal environment for infrastructure projects in all sectors including Ports, Special Economic Zones, Electricity Sector, Telecom Sector, etc. The law and policy has to be modern and the regulator require autonomy.

When a Pushcart Prize nominee for poetry with six or seven books to his credit and a writer whose translations of an Urdu poet have been nominated for a Nobel who also has six or seven books to her credit get together and bring out a compilation of their essays on India in a post-modern, minimalist, aporia-ridden effort what will the result be? A delectable potpourri, a Cortazarian hopscotch, a collage, a montage, a bricolage, an assemblage of fragments 'shored against ruins' that is poetic in pieces, literary at times, critical, theoretical and surface-centred at others and sketchy too at places, definitely. Will this book be banned, burned, be controversial(ized) or silenced and marginalized for questioning concepts like nation, caste and religions, while also questioning Gandhiji, criticizing

The author of a story book has the compulsions of dealing with the vagaries provided by life and the dichotomy that is life. The stories of the book are in a way reflections of life itself. Each story therefore is cast with different mould, as the genre remains the same the take off and landing is on perpetual stagger. The gripping point of each story in the book comes from its uniqueness, the unparrelleled themes, the changing facades, and unblinking heroics of the combatants in each story. An angler casts his net in familiar waters; the story writer does not have that luxury. The drama could start as a costume one and end up in a slow tempered modern day love theme. The seven colours of rainbow, the seven Ras of Indian stagecraft, the seven oceans come vibrantly in to our focus. The reader says, "Write what you like, will read what I like." The question majorly worrying the author to bridge the gap betwen the two likes and their lies the difference between the Gold and the Bronze medals, the wayword and the cutting edge of success.
