Russian expert Mark Galeotti provides an in-depth look at the siege that pitted Ivan the Terrible and Russia's first standing army against the Khanate of Kazan, leading to Muscovy's rise. The Khanate of Kazan, one of the greatest Turkic successor states to the Mongol Golden Horde, had for generations been a thorn in Muscovy's side, raiding its lands for slaves and plunder. The newly crowned Ivan IV, who would become known as Ivan the Terrible, was determined to end the threat once and for all, leading a massive army against Kazan in 1552, comprising the Streltsy (musketeers), Russia's first standing army, and a massive artillery and engineer train, including an English expert in siegecraft. Kazan was finally taken and brought directly into Muscovy's control, making it a truly multi-ethnic empire. The next four years would see a bitter guerrilla war against the Russians, but they were committed to the march south – going on to conquer the Astrakhan Khanate and the move east into Siberia, setting the scene for the rapid expansion of the Russian Empire under Ivan's Romanov successors. In this gripping tale of Russian history, expert historian Mark Galeotti explores the major land and river offensive that saw Kazan fall to Ivan the Terrible's Army. With colourful battlescenes, detailed 2D maps and 3D diagrams, this book showcases how this siege marked the rise of Muscovy and ultimately helped lead to the Russian state today.

A fascinating look at the campaign that launched the Chindit myth and saw Orde Wingate's long range patrol group wreak havoc across the Japanese lines.Arriving in Burma in 1942 to survey the environment and finalise his development of long range penetration units, Major General Orde Wingate set up the training and deployment of the Chindits. Under Operation Longcloth, the Chindits crossed the Chindwin into Burma in February 1943. The 3,000-man patrol undertook considerable feats of physical endurance, attacked enemy positions, sabotaged lines of communications and made themselves a nuisance to the Japanese. The survivors returned in May 1943, bringing to an end the first Chindit campaign. With detailed maps, stunning artwork and period images, this book looks at the origins and training of Wingate's long range penetration units and how Operation Longcloth became the basis of the Chindit legend. Written by expert historian Robert Lyman, the work explores how Wingate and the Chindits were heavily publicised even though the operation was a failure and their effectiveness was controversial.

An illustrated study of the organization, training, tactics, and operations of the US Navy during World War I, both before and after the US formally joined the Entente Powers. In 1914, the US Navy was the third-largest navy in the world. Although World War I brought no opportunity for the type of capital-ship fleet action for which it had been trained, the US Navy carried out (alongside the Allied navies) a wide range of other missions such as patrolling, convoy escort, laying mines, antisubmarine warfare, landing parties, and manning 14in. naval guns ashore on the Western Front, all while pioneering naval aviation against a background of gunboat diplomacy in the "e;Banana Wars"e; in the Caribbean. This absorbing new study examines the US Navy's varied activities in the different theaters of World War I, paying particular attention to the considerable array of uniforms, personal equipment, protective clothing, and insignia employed, including those used by the first female US naval personnel. Complementing naval warfare expert Brian Lane Herder's insightful research are archive photographs and eight newly commissioned color plates, providing a detailed and vivid account of the many facets of the US Navy during this pivotal chapter in its history.
