A gentleman's fortune, a disputed inheritance and a life told backwards from the ruin at the end of it. Lever is at his bleakest here; the charm of the military novels has gone and what is left is the account book. This edition adds a gallery of 46 plates after painters including Erskine Nicol, Edvard Munch and Hubert Robert, alongside ten illustrations restored and coloured.
