Perfect for fans of Percy Jackson and the Olympians! From the Newbery Honor–winning author of The Golden Fleece comes a middle grade volume adapting the classic epic poems The Iliad and The Odyssey into more accessible prose, featuring black-and-white illustrations throughout. When Telemachus was only a boy, King Agamemnon commanded his father, Odysseus, to join the Greeks in their war against Troy. Now, years later, Telemachus is a man, and his father still has not returned. To bring his father home—or at least learn of his fate—Telemachus embarks on a journey of his own. As he follows in his father’s footsteps, Telemachus undercovers an epic tale of a perilous sea voyage threatened by the man-eating monster Scylla and the raging whirlpool Charybdis, a respite on the island of the beautiful enchantress Circe, and a standoff with the imposing Cyclôpes Polyphemus. Odysseus wasn’t the only soldier in the Trojan War to tangle with mythological forces. Greek warrior Achilles prayed for and received aide from Zeus and, eventually, wore armor forged by Hephaestus while the Trojan prince Hector drew the attention of Athena and Apollo. Tangled allegiances, otherworldly threats, and ruthless warfare make the story of the war unforgettable. Using narrative threads from The Iliad and The Odyssey, Padraic Colum weaves a stunning adventure with all the drama and power Homer intended.

The Children of Odin is a classic collection of Norse Mythology, containing tales of the God Odin – a truly powerful deity associated with healing, death, royalty, the gallows, knowledge, battle, sorcery, poetry, and frenzy. Odin is attested as having many sons, most famously the god Baldr – and his children are known by hundreds of names. This text comes in three main parts: ‘The Dwellers in Asgard’, ‘Odin the Wanderer’, and ‘The Witch’s Heart.’The tales are penned by Padraic Colum, and are decorated with the whimsical black and white drawings of Willy Pogany. Colum (1881 – 1972) was an Irish poet, novelist, dramatist, biographer and playwright – and a passionate collector of folklore. His works, The Adventure of Odysseus (1918) and The Children of Odin (1920) are important in bringing classical literature to younger audiences. Willy Pogany (1882 – 1955) was a prolific Hungarian illustrator of myths and fables, and his stunning, painstakingly intricate drawings are presented alongside the text – so that the two may be better appreciated.

Alice in Wonderland'' is the best known work of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (1832 - 1898), better known by his pen name, ''Lewis Carroll''. Telling the tale of a girl named Alice who falls down a rabbit hole into a fantasy world populated by surreal and anthropomorphic creatures, the book was a huge commercial success on its initial publication in 1865. It was followed by its sequel, ''Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There'', in 1871. The books play at the heart of logical problems and literary nonsense – giving the narrative lasting popularity with adults and children alike. Originally published in 1929, this edition of the ''Alice in Wonderland'' story is accompanied by art work of William ''Willy'' Pogany. Pogany (1882 - 1955) was a prolific Hungarian illustrator of myths and fables, famed for his mythical animals, nymphs, pixies – and botanical detailing. His beautiful and painstakingly intricate pen-and-ink drawings are presented alongside Lewis Carroll''s text – so that the two may be better appreciated. This book forms part of our ''Pook Press'' imprint, celebrating the golden age of illustration in children''s literature.

The worst of being a Christmas Child is that you don''t get birthday presents, but only Christmas ones. Old Naylor, who was Father''s coachman, and had a great gruff voice that came from his boots and was rather frightening, used to ask how I expected to grow up without proper birthdays, and I thought I might have to stay little always. When I told Father this he laughed, but a moment later he grew quite grave."Listen, Chris," he said. And then he took me on his knee—I was a small chap then—and told me things that made me forget old Naylor, and wish and wish that Mother could have stayed with us. The angels had wanted her, Father explained; well, we wanted her too, and there were plenty of angels in heaven, anyway. When I said this Father gave me a great squeeze and put me down, and I tried to be glad that I was a Christmas child. But I wasn''t really until a long time afterwards, when I had found the Fairy Ring, and met the Queen of the Fairies.
