Robert S. Levine is Distinguished University Professor of English at the University of Maryland, College Park. He is the general editor of The Norton Anthology of American Literature and author, most recently, of The Failed Promise: Reconstruction, Frederick Douglass, and the Impeachment of Andrew Johnson. He lives in Ellicott City, Maryland. New to the Tenth Edition, Lisa Siraganian (Ph.D. Johns Hopkins, Editor, 1914–1945) is Associate Professor and the J. R. Herbert Boone Chair in Humanities at the Johns Hopkins University. She is the author of Modernism’s Other Work: The Art Object’s Political Life and Modernism and the Meaning of Corporate Persons. In addition, she has published essays in, among others, Law and Literature, American Literary History, Modernism/Modernity, Modern Fiction Studies, nonsite, and Post45.
