The purpose of this edition is to take up Buecheler’s admirable sylloge of Carmina Latina Epigraphica (1895-1926, 3 volumes). Since 1926 many new Latin metrical inscriptions and graffiti have been discovered, which greatly increased the number of epigraphic poetic texts previously known. These inscriptions have to be collected in order to be easily found, known and noticeable; the present sylloge aims at this outcome. An essential apparatus criticus with textual, historical, metrical, linguistic, and stylistic notes (approximately as in Buecheler’s edition) accompanies the edition of the texts. The texts are collected in three sections; the first and major section includes the carmina epigraphica whose metrical nature is undoubted, the second includes the commatica and the texts of dubious nature, the third one the aliena. In sections one and two the texts are arranged essentially according to the diatopic distribution and, inwards, to the chronological one. A concise preface focuses the most important questions in the field of the Latin metrical epigraphy. Many indexes conclude the work in two volumes, comprising about 1600 texts.

Selection of Latin poetry by the renowned Finnish scholar Tuomo PekkanenTuomo Pekkanen is one of the major Latin poets of our times. He is renowned for the Latin translation of Finland’s national epic poem, the Kalevala. The present book contains a fine selection from his Latin poetry, including a poetic paraphrasis of the St Matthew Passion and a Latin Requiem, set to music by the Italian composer Gregorio Santolla. The score of this Requiem is also enclosed. All texts in this volume are in Latin.

The Corpus Inscriptionum Latinarum (CIL) Auctarium series (part of the Series Nova since 2003) publishes monographs and edited volumes that analyse, provide supplements to, and present preliminary work on the inscription volumes. This volume contains discussions about the eighteenth CIL volume of the Carmina Latina Epigraphica, which is currently in preparation.

Saint Augustine famously “wept for Dido, who killed herself by the sword,” and many later medieval schoolboys were taught to respond in similarly emotional ways to the pain of female characters in Virgil’s Aeneid and other classical texts. In Weeping for Dido, Marjorie Curry Woods takes readers into the medieval classroom, where boys identified with Dido, where teachers turned an unfinished classical poem into a bildungsroman about young Achilles, and where students not only studied but performed classical works.Woods opens the classroom door by examining teachers’ notes and marginal commentary in manuscripts of the Aeneid and two short verse narratives: the Achilleid of Statius and the Ilias latina, a Latin epitome of Homer’s Iliad. She focuses on interlinear glosses—individual words and short phrases written above lines of text that elucidate grammar, syntax, and vocabulary, but that also indicate how students engaged with the feelings and motivations of characters. Interlinear and marginal glosses, which were the foundation of the medieval classroom study of classical literature, reveal that in learning the Aeneid, boys studied and empathized with the feelings of female characters; that the unfinished Achilleid was restructured into a complete narrative showing young Achilles mirroring his mentors, including his mother, Thetis; and that the Ilias latina offered boys a condensed version of the Iliad focusing on the deaths of young men. Manuscript evidence even indicates how specific passages could be performed. The result is a groundbreaking study that provides a surprising new picture of medieval education and writes a new chapter in the reception history of classical literature.
