One of the primary objectives of this book is to highlight the profound difference between two types of AI that pursue distinct goals: emulative AI, which seeks to build machines whose output is similar to, or even superior to, that of the human brain, and investigative AI, whose purpose is to make invisible information within data visible by uncovering the laws through which individual behaviors self-organize into collective behaviors. The former is better known, as it serves as a useful tool for automating human labor and generating market profits; the latter is less widely recognized but is more scientifically oriented towards saving lives (in the medical field), explaining otherwise inexplicable phenomena (in the geophysical field), and enhancing our understanding of the material and abstract world. The literature on growth and poverty is voluminous and still evolving. This title distills the most important lessons from developing countries’ experience with growth and poverty. It provides a broad understanding of the impact of economic policies on growth and poverty reduction in developing countries. After describing basic economic relationships that summarize the workings and the measurement of the macroeconomy—and after confirming that growth is the most critical factor in alleviating poverty—the book turns to individual policy areas. These include the various roles of government, among them setting fiscal policy and maintaining an environment conducive to the effective operation of a market economy. Policies governing money supply, exchange rates, and the financial sector are also covered. After assessing several decades of experience with development assistance, the aim of which has been to place poor countries on a path of sustainable long-run growth, the study turns to a discussion of external debt. In the 1980s and 1990s, debt contracted by low-income countries from commercial and official sources became unsustainable, crippling their growth, keeping millions in poverty, and forcing an international reappraisal of lending policies, the centerpiece of which was a set of debt-forgiveness policies that was put forward with the launch of the Jubilee 2000 debt relief campaign. Mainstream economic analysis has traditionally overlooked gender. The individual-the basic category of analysis-was regarded as genderless. This volume provides a unique overview of methodologies that are conducive to a successful legal transplant in East Asia and Oceania. Each chapter is drafted by a scholar who holds direct professional experience on the legal transplant considered and has a distinctive insight into the pragmatic difficulties related to grafting an alien institution into a legal tradition. The range of transplants includes the implementation of contractual obligations, the regulation of commercial investments and the protection of the environment. The majority of recent legal reforms in these geographical areas have aimed at improving national economic performance and fostering trade and have been directly inspired by European and North American institutional experiences. There is also, however, a tendency to couple economic reforms, aimed at attracting foreign investment, with constitutional reforms that improve the protection of individual rights, the environment and the rule of law.
