The Puritan Ideology of Mobility: Corporatism, the Politics of Place, and the Founding of New England Towns before 1650 examines the ideology that English Puritans developed to justify migration: their migration from England to New England, migrations from one town to another within New England, and, often, their repatriation to the mother country. Puritan leaders believed firmly that nations, colonies, and towns were all “bodies politic,” that is, living and organic social bodies. However, if a social body became distempered because of scarce resources or political or religious discord, it became necessary to create a new social body from the old in order to restore balance and harmony. The new social body was articulated through the social ritual of land distribution according to Aristotelian “distributive justice.” The book will trace this process at work in the founding of Ipswich and its satellite town in Massachusetts.

The 20th century holds many titles that emphasise the extraordinary. It was a century of totalitarianism, but also one of betrayal, an age of extremes and the incomprehensible. Betrayed, that is, at the mercy of unrestrained violence, were not only the people themselves but also, as it were, the idea of the human being. For up to a certain point, one could weigh oneself in an unfounded security of an inner connection between people. As is well known, such certainties were knocked out of hand in that century.Many situations, many images, motifs and sources can be named for this experience of unbounded violence, which now, at the beginning of the 21st century, requires new forms of transmission. In an era flooded with images, however, attention is more difficult. One has to embark on a search for traces, not because the sources are lacking, but because the form of inscription in history is problematic. This search for clues leads directly to the present monograph.

This work examines and compares courtship and marriage patterns that occurred between France and the United States during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Departing from state-centered studies of marriage law, it draws on the methodologies of transnational history, cultural history, and the history of emotion to show that these unions were part of a broader pattern of the larger cultural love affair between the two societies.

This book offers a study of how football became in the 1870s a global sport that was played by high school students on several continents. It provides a horizontal perspective that focusses on the spread of football in the 1870s from its English cradle to Germany, the United States, and Argentina. It will be the very first account of football that does not treat this sport in isolation but brings together the phenomenon of football with the conditions in nineteenth-century high schools and the crisis of urban living and, thereby, explains why this sport was so willingly and quickly accepted into various societies and cultures around the globe.Football was part of the social reform movement that emerged in the second half of the nineteenth century in response to the social ills of urban life. Adults and children spent more and more time inside badly ventilated buildings. Beginning in the 1870s, social reformers and teachers called for the introduction into school curricula of physical exercises that could be conducted on the meadows and sport fields outside cities.

This book presents the very first global treatment of eugenics. Eugenics emerged at the end of the nineteenth century as a global phenomenon that transcended religions, political orientations, and ideologies. It deeply influenced concepts of health care and state policies in many countries. Modern-day specialization and fragmentation of the historical profession have proven as ill-equipped to capture a global phenomenon such as eugenics and instead produced national or even regional studies of eugenics in which authors highlight the perceived national and regional specifics of eugenics in a particular setting. This book, by contrast, provides a history of eugenics that treats this global phenomenon in its complexity and its global span. It does not claim that eugenics in England, Germany, Canada, the United States, China and Japan was identical, but that developments in each country emerged from intensive contacts between eugenicists in these countries with each other. These eugenicists spoke the same language, followed similar trajectories, and shared a common vision.

Having established the idea that places at altitude have been valued as heritage sites, Ryan Sisak sets out in this work to fully explore the discursive impact of recognizing Aerospatial Heritage Sites. Given that five of the six astronauts from Apollo 8 and Apollo 11 have valued and ascribed meaning to five distinct places in outer space—from their initial visits in space to roughly half a century later—what are the implications for other historic events that occurred either in the air or in outer space? Did any of the astronauts who preceded those from Apollo value particular places in space as heritage sites? What about the historic airspace belonging to Edwards Air Force Base, where the sound barrier was first broken, along with other aerial feats? And what about the aerial battlefields from the Battle of Britain and Allied bombing campaigns of World War II above Europe? Did surviving aircrew reminisce such places in the same way that other historic battlefields are also valued as heritage? Thus, in addition to embarking on a parallel study of the intercultural transfers that influenced the historic events in question, this volume will demonstrate the validity and ramifications of recognizing historic places from the air and outer space as heritage sites. This work aims to establish Aerospatial Heritage Sites and aerial battlefields as intangible heritages that although may be represented in the air or outer space by relative places at altitude, are actually encapsulated within the spatial stories told or recorded by the people who valued them first.
