Paul addresses his readers as God's Temple in his Letters to the Corinthians, which are among the earliest documents of Christianity. This volume provides a synthesis of the historical and exegetical dimensions to Paul's cultic imagery. Previous theories (spiritualisation, substitution, comparative religions approach) cannot stand in view of the analysis of the broader historical context as well as reconsideration of Paul's theological perspective. This historical interpretation integrates relevant Qumran texts published since the 1990's, insights about the early Jesus-movement's Jewish origins, and canonical as well as extra-canonical Gospels in the discussion about cultic imagery. «Paul and God's Temple» sheds new light on Paul's relation to contemporary Judaism and temple-theological traditions, while putting Paul's cultic imagery in a rhetorical-critical and reader-oriented perspective.

Theologizing in the Corinthian Conflict is a collection of twenty exegetical studies on 2 Corinthians. Most of the texts were originally presented as papers during the annual meetings of the European Association of Biblical Studies. Some of the literary-critical issues of 2 Corinthians are touched upon in several contributions. Other essays focus on a variety of theological and interpretive questions: hermeneutics, the narrative and social world, revelation terminology, Paul’s theology of God and Christ, the understanding of the Spirit, the letter and the Spirit, conflict and reconciliation, poverty and wealth, debt theology and the collection, identity formation, synagogue beatings, parental beneficence, new creation and righteousness of God, dying for and being raised for, life after death, eschatology and new covenant, mysticism. In their diversity, the contributions of this book have in common that they are concerned with theological topics in exegetical perspective using a variety of approaches and methodologies. The goal of this book is not to reconstruct the theology of Paul, but to gain a deeper understanding of Paul’s theologizing in the Corinthian context of conflict and reconciliation.

"The Spirit Helps our Weakness"
Rom 8:26a in Light of Paul's Missiological Purpose for Writing the Letter to the Romans

“The Spirit Helps Our Weakness” examines the fundamental question of how precisely the Spirit aids the weakness of believers. After an initial discussion on the way Rom 8,26-27 has been interpreted, the study explores the central issues and conclusions in scholarship on the Romans debate. Building upon that scholarship, this study contends that Paul’s purpose in writing the letter revolved around a missiological imperative, which permeates the letter. The second part of the work provides an exegetical analysis of Rom 8,26a, including the way in which the clause fits within its broader context, particularly within vv. 26-27. In light of Paul’s missiological motivation, this study argues that the Spirit serves as activating agent to accomplish God’s mission. Ultimately, the missiological nature of the Spirit, working within believers, underlines the priority for Paul’s ministry and by extension, his purpose for writing the Letter to the Romans.

Oldest Gospel and the Formation of the Canonical Gospels
Part I: Inquiry. Part II: Reconstruction - Translation - Variants

Part I: The Gospel that was part of Marcion’s collection in the first half of the 2nd century is the oldest of all Gospels. The author presents a meticulous reconstruction and argues that all canonical Gospels are dependent on this Gospel. This sheds new light on the formation and tradition history of the gospels, contributes new insights on the history of the New Testament text and textual criticism, and has significant consequences for how to assess the formation of the canonical edition of the New Testament and the history of earliest Christianity in general. Part I contains the methodological foundation, substantiating the hypothesis that canonical Luke is a revised edition of this oldest Gospel. On this ground, a model of the Gospels’ tradition history is developed. A detailed epilogue comments on recent research on and reconstructions of Marcion’s Gospel and analyzes the methodological differences of these approaches. Part II: Reconstructing the text of Marcion’s Gospel is essential for the two basic tasks of establishing this Gospel’s priority over canonical Luke and understanding the formation process from this oldest Gospel to the canonical Four-Gospel book. Part. II offers a reconstruction of the oldest Gospel. Its text is established on the basis of evidence provided by the heresiological witnesses and the textual variants. A detailed commentary makes every single decision of the reconstruction transparent and carefully traces the steps of the tradition history for individual sayings and pericopes. The volume includes an English translation as well as an extensive list of the correspondences between the attestations for Marcion’s Gospel and the variants of canonical Luke.
