Is contemporary Black British gospel music a coloniality? What theological message is really conveyed in these songs? In this book, Robert Beckford shows how the Black British contemporary gospel music tradition is incrisis because its songs continue to be informed by colonial Christian ideas about God.Beckford explores the failure of both African and African Caribbean heritage Churches to Decolonise their faith, especially the doctrine of God, biblical interpretation and Black ontology. This predicament has left song leaders, musicians and songwriters with a reservoir of ideas that aim to disavow engagement with the social-historical world, black Biblical interpretation and the necessity of loving blackness. This book is decolonisation through praxis. Reflecting on the conceptual social justice album ‘The Jamaican Bible Remix’ (2017) as a communicative resource, Beckford shows how to develop production tools to inscribe decolonial theological thought onto Black British music(s). The outcome of this process is the creation of a decolonial contemporary gospel music genre. The impact of the album is demonstrated through case studies in national and international contexts.

Mediating Black religious studies, spirituality studies, and liberation theology, Philip Butler explores what might happen if Black people in the United States merged technology and spirituality in their fight towards materializing liberating realities. The discussions shaping what it means for humans to exist with technology and as part of technology are already underway: transhumanism suggests that any use of technology to augment intellectual, psychological, or physical capability makes one transhuman. In an attempt to encourage Black people in the United States to become technological progenitors as a spiritual act, Butler asks whether anyone has ever been ‘just’ human? Butler then explores the implications of this question and its link to viewing the body as technology.Re-imagining incarnation as a relationship between vitality, biochemistry, and genetics, the book also takes a critical scientific approach to understanding the biological embodiment of Black spiritual practices. It shows how current and emerging technologies might align with the generative biological states of Black spiritualities in order to concretely disrupt and dismantle oppressive societal structures.

This book fills a gap in religious studies literature by providing a historical study of Black gospel music in Britain. While Black gospel music is a global phenomenon that evolved in many places, including the Caribbean, America and Europe, many still look to America for an understanding of its origin. Dulcie Dixon McKenzie challenges this approach, asserting that there is no universal, ‘one-size-fits-all’ historical account of Black gospel music. Instead, McKenzie offers an alternative to the American-dominated discourse, presenting Black gospel music as a tradition that was birthed in the churches founded by African Caribbean migrants during the post-war years in Britain. This book is structured around three main themes—context, culture and conservation—and features first-hand accounts from founding members of African Caribbean Pentecostalism, as well as from selected pioneers of singing and music within the various historic congregations. It explores topics such as the arrival and settlement of African Caribbean ancestors in Britain, the exporting of African Caribbean religious beliefs and practices, the growth of African Caribbean Pentecostal churches in Britain, and illustrations of a distinctive African Caribbean Pentecostal style of congregational worship.

Using the concept of a “religious market”, this volume explores how African Traditional Religions and churches within Prophetic Pentecostalism in Zimbabwe seek to attract and retain members and clients.Chapters provide extensive coverage of two of the leading churches, namely, Emmanuel Makandiwa’s United Family International Church (UFIC) and Walter Magaya’s Prophetic Healing and Deliverance Ministries (PHD). Contributors also explore the strategies adopted by Pentecostalism in general, while others focus on African Traditional Religions. They show that although Prophetic Pentecostalism has gained a significant share of the market in Zimbabwe and in Southern Africa in general, it is not without controversy. In particular, it has been associated with the abuse of women and exploiting members and clients for financial gain.Innovation and Competition in Zimbabwean Pentecostalism is an important contribution to understanding the marketization of religion.

Focusing on the three leading religious traditions in Africa (African Traditional Religion, Islam, and Christianity), this book shows how belief in the supremacy of sacred words compels actions and influences practices in contemporary Africa."Sacred words” are taken to mean holy texts as in divination, the Quran and the Bible. Toyin Falola evaluates how religious leaders engage with sacred words, both orals and texts, engendering practices that reveal the expression of religious beliefs, the impact of those beliefs, and the knowledge contained in them. Attention is given to the key ideas in the words chosen by religious leaders, and how they form a continuous knowledge system, impacting the politics of managing society and people.

This text introduces Ben Ammi, the leader and theologian of the African Hebrew Israelite community, as a systematic thinker and theologian. It examines his many books and speeches in order to provide a comprehensive introduction to his thought in the context of both African American and Jewish contemporaries and precursors.Divided into three thematic sections, History, Law, and Language, the text introduces Ben Ammi’s understanding of the nature of God, the responsibilities of the human, and the narrative of history. Ben Ammi was a deeply spiritual but also remarkably modern thinker who blended scientific thought into his evolving socio-theology, while seeking to remove religion from the realm of mythology. The book evaluates how Ben Ammi’s theology is one bound to concepts of humility and learning how to go with the grain of the natural world in order to find humanity’s true center as a part of nature.

This volume reveals how religion interfaces with inequality in different African contexts. Some contributors undertake detailed analyses of how religion creates (and justifies) different forms of inequality that holds back individuals, groups and communities across the continent from flourishing, while others show how religion can also mitigate inequality in Africa.Topics addressed include gender inequality, economic inequality, disability, ageism and religious homophobia. Specifically focusing on the United Nation's Sustainable Development Goal 10 to reduce inequality within and among countries, this book highlights the extent to which Africa’s ‘notoriously religious’ identity needs to be taken into account in discourses on development.

Is God a white racist? Posed by William R. Jones in his ground-breaking book of the same name, this question disrupted the theological assumptions that marked Black religious thought from early writings of the 1800s to the formation of Black theology in the 1960s. This book compiles his key and essential writings related to over three decades of critical reflection on race, religion, secularism, and oppression in the United States.Over the course of 30 years, Jones pushed questions and considerations that refined Black theology and that gave greater shape to and understanding of Black philosophers’ intervention into issues of racial and structural inequality. His philosophical work, related to the grid of oppression, fosters an approach to the nature and meaning of oppression in the United States, encouraging rational interrogation of structures of injustice and thought patterns supporting those structures.Still relevant today, the straightforward style of communication used by Jones makes these essays easily accessible to a popular audience, while maintaining intellectual rigor, making the book also suitable for an academy-based audience.

How does a regime, whose members have been actively involved in the previous one, appropriate and deploy religious ideas and rhetoric to cast itself as ‘born-again’ and attractive? Exploring intersections between politics, religion and economics, this book examines invention of Zimbabwe’s ‘New Dispensation,’ the regime of Emmerson D. Mnangagwa, and how it has aimed to separate itself from the previous regime of Robert G. Mugabe. Utilizing the concept of ‘invention’, contributors reflect on how Mnangagwa and his publicists deploy religious ideas, concepts and rhetoric in the quest for legitimacy in a heavily contested political field. The book also reflects on the ways opposing political actors have utilized the same template in their quests to secure power. The contributors interrogate the use of time, theological ideas and religious practices to separate Mnangagwa’s regime from Mugabe’s. This book provides insight into how religious rhetoric is used not only to gain, but also to contest legitimacy in Zimbabwe’s political sphere.

This book signifies a distinct separation of the ritual healing process in the Zion Christian Church from traditional African medicine while also attempting to synthesize contemporary medical approaches with indigenous knowledge systems. The Zion Christian Church is recognized for its distinctive amalgamation of religious activities, which include faith healing, prophecy, and significant pilgrimages, particularly the Easter pilgrimage to Moria. Despite the church's emphasis on the Christian identity within its faith healing practices, some observers interpret various rituals and beliefs as syncretic. Consequently, these readings have led to allegations that the church integrates aspects of African traditional medicine and witchcraft into its rituals. This book utilizes the church as a case study to examine healing faith, practices, and rituals thereof within the larger framework and context of African Independent Churches. This theology is used to help place the faith of patients and the importance of God’s role as healer ahead of the healing rituals. Its unique theme-driven, interconnected chapters contain discussions around various practices, encompassing purification and protection rituals as well as therapeutic worship. Consequently, scholars in religious studies, theology, anthropology, and history will find this book an important resource in understanding the role of healing rituals among African Independent Churches.
