Brill's Companions to Classical Studies: Warfare in the Ancient Mediterranean World – serie

After decades of controversy, there is now a growing consensus that Greek warfare was not singular and simple, but complex and multiform. In this volume, emerging and established scholars build on this consensus to explore Greek warfare beyond its traditional focus on hoplites and the phalanx. We expand the chronological limits back into the Iron Age, the geographical limits to the central and eastern Mediterranean, and the operational limits to include cavalry, light-armed troops, and sieges. We also look beyond the battlefield at integral aspects of warfare including religion, the experiences of women, and the recovery of the war dead.

Aegean prehistory was born out of the search for the Trojan War. Since the time of Heinrich Schliemann, new forms of evidence have come to light and innovative questions have arisen, including examinations of warfare as a concept. This volume interrogates the nature of warfare in the Bronze Age Aegean for scholars and teachers with knowledge of the ancient Mediterranean, who wish to access the state of the field when it comes to the ways that specialists approach warfare in the prehistoric Aegean. Authors review evidence, consider the social and cultural place of war, and revisit longstanding questions.

Focusing on military diet and supply from Homer through the Roman Empire, Diet and Logistics in Greek and Roman Warfare explains regional dietary options and reassesses traditional notions of “provisioning” while exploring topics ranging from strategy and subterfuge to trade and terror. Through fresh insights drawn from current research and excavation spanning the Greco-Roman world, contributors confirm how providing food and drink for soldiers was critical to every army’s success and survival. This volume stimulates reevaluation of ancient militaries and encourages new research.

Brill’s Companion to Ancient Greek and Roman Warfare on Film is the first volume exclusively dedicated to the study of a theme that informs virtually every reimagining of the classical world on the big screen: armed conflict. Through a vast array of case studies, from the silent era to recent years, the collection traces cinema’s enduring fascination with battles and violence in antiquity and explores the reasons, both synchronic and diachronic, for the central place that war occupies in celluloid Greece and Rome. Situating films in their artistic, economic, and sociopolitical context, the essays cast light on the industrial mechanisms through which the ancient battlefield is refashioned in cinema and investigate why the medium adopts a revisionist approach to textual and visual sources.

Brill’s Companion to War in the Ancient Iranian Empires examines military structures and methods from the Elamite period through the Achaemenid, Seleucid, Arsacid, and Sasanian empires. War played a critical role in Iranian state formation and dynastic transitions, imperial ideologies and administration, and relations with neighbouring states and peoples from Central Asia to the Mediterranean. Twenty chapters by leading experts offer fresh approaches to the study of ancient Iranian armies, strategy, diplomacy, and battlefield methods, and contextualise famous conflicts with Greek and Roman opponents.

This Companion whose contributions come from an outstanding array of experts deals exclusively with the military campaigns of Philip II and his son Alexander the Great and the forces that fought in them. In addition to discussions of the strategy and tactics of the two commanders, the Companion examines those elements that went into the determination of these strategies and tactics. Chapters will be devoted to the logistics of these campaigns, military recruitment and training, the care of diseased and injured soldiers, military organization and equipment, and much more. While no study can ever be truly complete, this Companion comes far closer that any such previous attempt.

Considering war from a female perspective, diverse case studies from the Ancient Near East to the Roman World show the many faces of women’s involvement in war and campaigning and try to answer the question of why ancient Greek and Roman authors tend to object to women participating in military activities. It combines studies on literary and material sources and examines “famous” cases of women at war such as the myth of the Amazons, the portrayal of Artemisia of Halicarnassus, and the military role of Macedonian royal women.

This volume contains contributions from global experts on the nature of military courage and cowardice in ancient Greece, Rome, Mesopotamia, Israel, and Egypt. Using ground-breaking concepts in human emotions (including fear), behavior (bravery, boldness, recklessness, flight), and motivation (tangible and intangible rewards), the book problematizes traditional dichotomies associated with expected reactions to danger on the battlefield. In analyses of historiography, epic, epigraphy, numismatics, philosophy, and myth, authors demonstrate that no individual was impervious to the stresses of ancient battle.
