This book collects a set of reflections concerning the planning of contemporary cities by urban design, with a special emphasis on some needs and shortcomings emerged during the coronavirus pandemic. With the ultimate goal of designing accessible, inclusive and welcoming green cities, it discusses the urgent need for new systems of public spaces across the city, together with alternative solutions for individual mobility (especially slow mobility) and social interaction. It is intended for a broad readership, including designers, engineers, architects, social scientists, stakeholders, and public administrators, who deal with various aspects of the realization of the City 4.0.

This book offers the first comprehensive report on the topic of organizational innovation and sustainability of urban regeneration from the public manager's perspective. Starting from a rich set of case studies on urban regeneration from the region of Apulia, in Italy, it develops a framework for measuring their sustainability performance. This book is based on the results of a meeting withing the framework of the SMART CITY 4.0 Sustainable LAB project in which the universities of Emilia-Romagna participate. It covers the topic of smart city regulation from a double perspective. On the one hand, it discusses rights in a smart city. Here, the book analyses the impact that urban transformation in a smart sense can have on constitutional rights, concerning, for example, social inclusion policies. It also discusses the topic of smart work, suggesting some innovative directions for the future. Further it suggests new ways to regulate the use and sharing of data and in general of technologies in smart cities to improve public services. The second part of the book deals with smart cities governance. It provides a fresh reflection on citizen participation and decision-making processes in the city of the future, analyzing some examples of digitalization and drawbacks in its availability throughout the national context (with a focus on the Italian situation). In turn, it discusses the fast evolution of the regulatory framework for automated driving in Europe, as an exemplary case study, offering some timely reflections on human safety. All in all, this book offers a comprehensive review of current questions concerning smart city regulation, merging different perspectives and providing both researchers and professionals with a source of inspiration for new research, developments, and interdisciplinary collaborations.

This book analyses the complex relationship between European historical cities and their visual representations from the postwar period to the present. Using approaches and methodologies from different disciplinary fields, authors address the tangible and intangible transformations of cities in relation to the varied images produced and conveyed by different media over time. To this end, various photographic and cinematographic representations of the city are analyzed, as well as more "unusual" narratives and images as home-movies, video art projects, murals, and street art. All in all, this book presents extensive theories and case studies around the interrelationships between cities and the system of different visualizations that increasingly shape their materiality and experiences. By analyzing how the image of historical cities is constructed and evolves alongside their urban fabric, as well as the transformations this may generate in terms of imaginaries and social structures, it also provides an opportunity to reflect on the role of aesthetics and history in those phenomena lying at the intersection of images, politics, architecture, and urban planning.
