Security co-operation between states remains elusive. Using a case study with wide implications for European security and stability, the division of former Soviet security assets between Russia and Ukraine, Deborah Sanders considers which factors promote and which hamper security co-operation. She examines the dynamics of security co-operation in three areas: the dismantling of Ukraine's tactical nuclear weapons, the removal of Ukraine's strategic nuclear weapons, and the division of the Black Sea fleet. While the collapse of the Soviet Union opened up numerous possibilities for co-operation between the two countries, it also unleashed long suppressed national feelings and reawakened historical controversies. Sanders argues that the dynamics of co-operation can only be understood if these domestic political factors are taken into account.

This volume gives a full account of the role of amphibious warfare in British strategy between VE Day and the Anglo French assault on Suez in 1956. Ian Speller analyzes the development of postwar strategic planning and the manner in which this influenced the nature of Britain's armed forces in the 1940s and 1950s. By detailing the development of equipment, doctrine and the role of the Royal Marines he sheds new light on the military response to a succession of overseas crises.

The command and control of military operations is a difficult art. "The Challenges of High Command" explores British ideas of how this should be done and, with the guidance of some of Britain's leading military historians, looks at the practicalities of British experience in World Wars I and II. The contributors cast new light on themes as diverse as the trench warfare of World War I, the conduct of the Gallipoli and Norway campaigns, and the command performance of Bomber Harris and Bill Slim. The volume concludes with a major review of how military operations should be conducted in present-day political and technological conditions and includes an informal and frank commentary by General Sir Mike Jackson on his experience in Bosnia and Kosovo.

This volume brings together eminent scholars in the field of defence studies to assess the changing dynamics of military power. It focuses in particular on the move towards joint service co-operation as a way of minimizing costs and increasing efficiency.

This work explains the international engagement with the Kosovo conflict from the dissolution of Yugoslavia to Operation Allied Force. It shows how Kosovo was deliberately excluded from the search for peace in Yugoslavia before going on to demonstrate how a shaky international consensus was forged to support air strikes in 1999. In doing so, it exposes many of the myths and conspiracy theories that have developed about the war and explains the dilemmas facing actors in this unfolding drama.
