Sherwood Anderson’s Winesburg, Ohio, revisits a classic, twentieth-century American text. Scholars from around the world share their intrepretations and shed new light on Anderson’s contribution to Modernism and his legacy to later writers. They look closely at gender relations, masculinity, place, the nature of community, and the elusive American Dream.

An innovative volume of interdisciplinary essays on the significant British writer J. G. Ballard (1930-2009), exploring the physical, cultural and intertextual landscapes in several key novels with a central focus on The Atrocity Exhibition (1970), one of the most challenging texts in contemporary literature. Contributors include established critics of Ballard alongside newcomers. Different spatial concepts underpin the essays, from the landscapes of Ballard’s youth in Shanghai and his life in suburban London, to nuclear testing spaces and outer space exploration. The authors of the essays include prominent Arthur Miller scholars such as Terry Otten and the late Steven Centola as well as young, emerging scholars. Some of the essays, particularly the ones written by the emerging scholars, tend to employ literary theory while the ones by the established scholars tend to illustrate the strengths of traditional criticism by interpreting the text closely. It is fascinating to see how scholars at different stages of their academic careers approach a given topic from distinct perspectives and sometimes diverse methodologies. The essays offer insightful and provocative readings of Death of a Salesman in a collection that will prove quite useful to scholars and students of Miller’s most famous play.

Wise Blood: A Re-Consideration is a collection of nineteen new essays on Flannery O’Connor’s 1952 novel about the spiritual journey of a young man raised in a fundamentalist Christian family. Following the pattern of previous books in the Dialogue series, it offers analyses by established and emerging scholars in North America. The volume comprises five sections: Religious and Philosophical Thought; Comedy, Humor, and Animality in Wise Blood; Influences on Wise Blood; Structural Issues; and Gender, Culture, and Genre. An intensely religious novel by a Catholic author, Wise Blood continues to draw keen attention from literary scholars, theologians, preachers, and lay readers. While Oscar Wilde’s delightfully-witty comedies of manners receive the most fanfare from the general public and much of academia, Wilde’s most “serious” play—Salome—rightfully deserves an equal amount of attention. Written by emerging scholars, established scholars, and notable Wilde scholars at the top of the field, the far-ranging essays in this book—the first collection solely on Wilde’s Salome—provide new readings of the play, allowing us to better assess how and why Salome either fits or does not fit into Wilde’s oeuvre. Framed in a new light in this collection, this fuller understanding of Salome should potentially change the way we read both Salome and Wilde’s entire oeuvre.
