Les dix-sept regards sur les « spectateurs » réunis dans le présent volume s’inscrivent dans un projet de recherche de longue haleine sur l’essai périodique en Europe. Le recueil prolonge la publication de plusieurs volumes dans notre collection sur les « Lumières » et la mise en place d’une base de données, tous consacrés aux « spectateurs » de langues romanes. À la différence de ces derniers, il envisage cependant non seulement les « spectateurs » français, italiens ou espagnols mais aussi des périodiques anglophones, russes ou germanophones. En élargissant ainsi la perspective, cet ouvrage espère mieux prendre en compte le rayonnement des « spectateurs » à l’échelle mondiale. Et il tente en particulier de donner quelques éléments de réponse à une question essentielle : quelles sont les raisons qui ont permis à ces journaux, un siècle durant, et d’un bout du monde à l’autre, de connaître un succès sans précédent dans l’histoire de la presse littéraire ? Ce livre contient des contributions en français, allemand, italien, espagnol et anglais.

The Spectators, also known as Moral Weeklies, were an important magazine genre which came into being in the early 18th century and which shaped European identity by developing the strategies of critical journalism and by popularizing the ideas and values of the Age of Enlightenment. Investigating modes of storytelling in the Spectators is an important starting point for a paradigmatic investigation of our historical, cultural and philosophical evolution since the Enlightenment and the impact of these magazines on issues of identity in today’s Europe. In this collection on ‹Storytelling in the Spectators›, we present a series of contributions which study English, French, Spanish, Italian, German, Dutch, Czech, Polish and Danish-Norwegian periodicals.

In 1719, the former secretary of State and famous English writer Joseph Addison passed away and was burried in Westminster Abbey among the great national poets. A few decades later, the great lexicographer Samuel Johnson defined Joseph Addison’s prose style as the quintessence of Englishness in his Lives of the English Poets. This selection of essays ambitions to celebrate the tercentenary of his death by showing that Addison was part of the European as much as the English Enlightenment. It explores how European countries and cultures played a decisive, if somewhat ambiguous role in his career and writing. It finally offers insights of Addison’s huge literary and journalistic legacy in Europe.
