For many decades, hybrid devices have been used to connect 2-wire local circuits and 4-wire long distance circuits in telephone lines. This leads to a weIl known problem, whereby echoes are generated. The delay introduced by telecommunication satellites exacerbated this problem and the need for new methods of echo control soon became obvious. The best solution to date for solving this problem was invented in the 1960s at Bell Labs by Kelly, Logan, and Sondhi, and consists of identifying the echo path generated by the hybrid by means of an adaptive filter, a technique that became known as an echo canceler. The echo canceler allowed full-duplex communication which was not possible with older echo suppression techniques. Later, with the development of hands-free teleconferencing systems, an other echo problem appeared; but this time the echo was due to the coupling between the loudspeaker and microphone. It is not surprising that the same solution was proposed to solve this problem, and most of today's telecon ferencing systems have an acoustic echo canceler. More recently, attention has been given to the very interesting problem of multichannel acoustic echo cancellation, which leads to more exciting applications that take advantage of our binaural auditory system.

The study and implementation of microphone arrays originated over 20 years ago. Thanks to the research and experimental developments pursued to the present day, the field has matured to the point that array-based technology now has immediate applicability to a number of current systems and a vast potential for the improvement of existing products and the creation of future devices. In putting this book together, our goal was to provide, for the first time, a single complete reference on microphone arrays. We invited the top re searchers in the field to contribute articles addressing their specific topic(s) of study. The reception we received from our colleagues was quite enthusi astic and very encouraging. There was the general consensus that a work of this kind was well overdue. The results provided in this collection cover the current state of the art in microphone array research, development, and technological application. This text is organized into four sections which roughly follow the major areas of microphone array research today. Parts I and II are primarily the oretical in nature and emphasize the use of microphone arrays for speech enhancement and source localization, respectively. Part III presents a num ber of specific applications of array-based technology. Part IV addresses some open questions and explores the future of the field.

The most outstanding feature of this book is that it treats the design of filters that approximate a constant group delay, and both, the prescribed magnitude and group delay response of one-dimensional as well as two-dimensional digital filters. It so fills a void in the literature, that almost solely deals with the magnitude response of the filter transfer function. The volume contains many of the important results that have appeared in professional journals only recently.

In this book signals or images described by functions whose number of arguments varies from one to five are considered. This arguments can be time, spatial dimensions, or wavelength in a polychromatic signal. The book discusses the basics of mathematical models of signals, their transformations in technical pre-processing systems, and criteria of the systems quality. The models are used for the solution of practical tasks of system analysis, measurement and optimization, and signal restoration. Several examples are given.

Reporting the state of the art of color image processing, this monograph fills an existing gap in the literature on digital signal and image processing. It can serve the needs of different users at different levels: as a textbook which covers a graduate image processing course, as a up-to-date reference for researchers since it offers a broad survey of the relevant literature, and as a relevant information source for development engineers who work in the design and the implementation of various image processing tasks. Part of the material in the book was the basis of seminars at the University of Toronto. The book contains numerous examples and pictures of color image processing results, as well as tables which summarize the results of the analysis. Algorithms implemented in JAVA can be downloaded from the author's website .

There are more than 100 books on Circuit Analysis, Network Synthesis, Ana log and Digital Filters and Signal Processing written at the undergraduate and graduate level and a few more written as Reference and Handbooks. When and if they discuss the design of analog and digital filters, they treat mainly the approximation of the magnitude response of the filters and very little of their phase or group delay response. There is hardly any discussion of designing fil ters that simultaneously approximate the magnitude and group delay response of the filters. Thus most of the books routinely discuss Butterworth, Chebyshev and sometimes the Cauer or elliptic function response of the lowpass prototype filters, followed by the transformations to design highpass, bandpass and band stop filters-all of them approximating their magnitude response only. Due to the rapid progress from analog to digital communication and data transmission that has taken place in recent years, there is a greater need for designing filters that approximate both the magnitude and group delay requirements. So also is the need to design 2-dimensional digital filters, particularly those used in image processing, that approximate prescribed magnitude as well as constant group delay responses. A lot of research work has been published in professional jour nals on the design of these filters in the last 10-15 years.
