Der Briefwechsel des Malers Hans Purrmann (1880–1966) und des Juristen und Schriftstellers Wilhelm Wittmann (1881–1920) ist Zeugnis einer Jugendfreundschaft der Jahre 1899 bis 1910. Leider sind nur die Briefe Purrmanns an Wittmann erhalten. Sie bieten einen spannenden Einblick in die frühen Jahre des Malers, der durch diese Freundschaft Zugang zu einer für ihn neuen Welt erhält, die von Bildung, Literatur und intellektueller Auseinandersetzung geprägt ist. Aus den Briefen wird deutlich, wie intensiv sich Purrmann um künstlerische Perfektion bemüht, wem er in dieser frühen Phase begegnet und was ihn formt. Zudem enthalten sie neue Erkenntnisse über das Frühwerk des Malers und dokumentieren das Zeitkolorit um 1900 in Deutschland. The edition makes accessible for the first time the complete correspondence between the collector and founder of the Folkwang Museum Karl Ernst Osthaus and the painters Henri Matisse and Hans Purrmann. The correspondence thus opens up new sources on the early reception history of Matisse's works in Germany, on the genesis of early major works by the painter, and on the founding of the Académie Matisse. The edition of the widely scattered correspondence offers numerous new insights not only for Matisse research, but also for the study of Hans Purrmann and the founder of the Folkwang Museum. The correspondence is supplemented by a foreword from the Hans Purrmann Archive as well as an introduction by the editors, an index of persons, and a bibliography.
