The technology of lasers is now so ubiquitous that there are very few areas of modern life in which these devices do not have some part to play. This text is intended as a practical guide, to help those who work with lasers to do so safely. It begins with a broad introductory review of the main essentials of laser safety and then goes on to present a more detailed discussion of the background to laser safety in the second part. Part three considers practical approaches to safe laser use in some important areas of laser application. Henderson has also included elementary descriptions of laser operation and brief outlines of various laser applications for the less advanced reader.

A reference work covering the major industrial lasers, systems, processes and applications currently in use. The text looks at the curriculum of the Eurolaser Academy as presented by a team of experts in these fields. The material has been used for several years on the month-long international summer schools supported by the Commission of the European Union and during that period has been constantly upgraded and refined. This book should be of interest to UKREA MET; all industries using lasers including automative, aerospace, general engineering, manufacturing, and electronic manufacturing; marketing researchers of lasers and laser manufacturers.

The European Community regards training as a priority area and has therefore developed a series of programmes in the field of vocational training. This book is the result of a pilot project selected under two of these Community Action Programmes. It was initially selected under the COMETT programme, concerned with the development of continuing vocational training in the European Community. Moreover, it was one of the few selected projects to receive further funding under a second selection in the context of the LEONARDO DA VINCI Action Programme for the implementation of a European Community Vocational Training policy. It is with great pleasure that I present the outcome of this project which embodies one of the fundamental objectives of the LEONARDO DA VINCI Programme - training for new technologies in SMEs, which make a significant contribution to economic development in Europe. - K DRAXLER, Director Directorate General XXII European Commission
