The study examines the interrelationships which evolved among the rural polities of Kauru and Pengana hills in the Central Nigerian Highlands. It analyses the relations within and between these polities and between them and the Islamic states which emerged in their neighbourhood and which tried to bring the polities under their control. It considers both patterns of peaceful coexistence and military confrontations. The volume is a significant contribution to the growing body of literature on the historiography of African intergroup relations. It is a major addition in the search for the basis of conflict resolutions in North Central Nigeria.

Born out of the clash between oral traditions and Western literary standards, Native American fiction has grown into a unique and distinct art form. Aboriginal writers merge native and non-native elements and talk to a multicultural audience. Based on six novels published in 1993/94, the author illustrates the individual differences and the common ground existing among contemporary indigenous writers. Their fiction deals with concurrent themes, issues and characters, addressing questions of identity, belonging and 'Nativeness' in the modern world. Presenting heroes who move back and forth between the two cultures and create their own individual lifestyles, the novelsdeconstruct stereotypes and define Native American identity in new ways which reflect the reality of modern indigenous life in North America.

This inquiry has emerged out of a search for a philosophy dealing with modern social problems, e.g. development and underdevelopment. By inquiring into G.H. Mead's socio-philosophical anthropology, the author aims at establishing the basis on which philosophical explanations to given modern social problems may be grounded. In the course of this study, the author concentrates on two aspects: on the one hand, he intends to develop his hypothesis that Mead's line of thought is to a great extent a philosophical anthropology, on the other hand, he has to develop his own terminology as part of the inquiry- e.g., the terms: supportivity and suppressivity of the self.

This monograph deals with the economic analysis and mathematical modeling of the diffusion of interorganizational information systems and networks. One result is that the models have to consider explicitly the various objectives and dependencies between system owner and system user. The proposed models are based on diffusion theory, network economy as well as on a methodical paradigm that closely relates to engineering sciences and has become known as gray modeling. All models are first theoretically developed and subsequently exemplified by suited numerical examples. The results will help economists and system analysts to identify the success factors for the growth of network products and to propose concrete solutions for their introduction.

Children play a vital role in the work of Ilse Aichinger. Through an analysis of Die groessere Hoffnung and other texts, this monograph sets out to explore their significance within Aichinger's world-view, and the implications of this for her writing. The key to these questions lies in Aichinger's interpretation of Matthew 18:3: 'Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.' For Aichinger, this is 'vielleicht das haerteste Gebot der Bibel' (Kleist, Moos, Fasane), because she equates becoming 'as little children' with 'die Ergebung in das o...!, woran wir nichts koennen' (Kleist, Moos, Fasane). The helpless child is a metaphor for humanity, and the 'Spiel' (game, play) of the child is a celebration of life in the face of death.

Pluralism is more than difference in behavioral patterns. It is a fundamental difference in worldviews, and Nigeria typifies it. It implies that autonomous individuals within a societal continuum do not constitute an integral amalgamation of a body-politic. A multi-cultural, multi-religious, multi-ethnic and multi-lingual blend, Nigeria serves as a good laboratory for pluralist test. What Nigeria needs is authority in order to articulate these plural and conflicting world-views into a reasonable discourse or committed dialogue. It is then the challenge of authority in Nigeria to reconcile the apparent incompatibilities within the multiple groups into a reasonable consensus. Plagued with the pathological equivocations of human rights, incessant military coups and counter-coups, vicious ethnic discrimination and lack of regard for meritocracy, Nigeria stands as a classical example of a leaderless society. Derided by foes as a political patchwork, and portrayed by friends as a potential volcano, all that Nigeria needs is authority that can articulate her numerous but diversified potentials into a catalyst for human development.No sustainable political or social foundations could be laid in the absence of this desideratum.

A successful international harmonisation of accounting standards necessitates a detailed analysis of existing differences as well as their cause. This study provides such an analysis, exemplary for the area of intangible assets and two countries, namely Germany and Great Britain. Differences and similarities are determined in a thorough comparison of current accounting rules. The 'Environmental Determinism Theory' is then applied to examine whether the observed differences can be explained based on the legal system, the tax system and the capital market structure existent in each country. Finally, an approach towards a harmonisation of accounting standards with respect to intangible assets is suggested that takes into account not only the economic and legal environment in which accounting operates in Germany and Great Britain but also current international developments.

Divorce has become an institutionalised part of the family system and its functioning in the developed as well as in the developing countries. Many studies have been done on these divorce effects in the western world. In the developing countries, little studies have been done in this area. Can one rightly apply these findings in the western world to divorcees in developing countries or have culture and level of development an influence on the divorce effects? Igbo of southern Nigeria, a people from a typical developing country, was used in this study which investigates into the psychological effects of divorce on the divorced women and their children. Statistical analysis of the questionnaire findings show that divorce has a significant effect on the divorced women. Divorce has also a significant effect on the children of the divorced women. These results were interpreted in the socio-cultural, economic and general context of the Igbo people; and discussed in the light of the other research findings.

This study of Wolfram's Parzival concentrates on service for riches in medieval knighthood. The epic is interpreted as a conflict between reciprocal feudal loyalty and self-centered mercenary service. The actions of Gahmuret, Anfortas, Parzival, and Feirefiz are held up against the historical background of the crusades, where service for abstract ideals is undermined by service for material gain. Although the power of riches is subdued by the sword in the end, the author maintains that the Parzival is an heroic defense of feudal values in an historical state of decline. He also criticizes traditional Parzival interpretations based on the chivalric system of the virtues, religious didactics, courtly love relationships, and dynastic relationships.

The core of this publication is a profound research conducted from 1993 to 1997, and extended to cover relevant developments in 1998 and 1999. Using the Southern African Development Community (SADC) economies to proxy for the Southern African members of the African, Caribbean, and Pacific (ACP) group of States which are associated with the EU through the Lome Convention (LC), the study comprehensively explicates the EU-ACP co-operation in a scientific but uncomplicated manner. It presents carefully argued cases, trying as much as possible to augment the qualitative arguments with empirical evidence. To discern the rationale and impact of EU-SADC relations within the framework of the LC, besides making a bearing on the historical aspects of these relations, the study also infers to the propelling forces of international trade and international economic linkages generally, as well as the posited associations between export performance and economic growth. In addition, it compares and contrasts the merits of the LC with factors that undermine the operational efficiency of the arrangement.Also, it proposes a range of plausible measures that should be implemented in order to enhance the efficiency of co-operation between the EU and the SADC within the framework of a revamped EU-ACP co-operation arrangement. In addition, this second revised edition is extended to cover latest developments related to the debate on post-Lome IV EU-ACP relations. Hence, it outlines also the ACP and EU negotiating mandates, and explores the key aspects of the EU-commissioned regional economic partnership agreement (REPA) studies.

This book springs from the practical interaction of two absorbing interests: in covenant, thanks to many years of lecturing on the Scriptures, in which covenants provide a sure road from start to finish of the Bible; and in liberation, an interest sharpened by more than a decade of working in a Lima parish with people struggling desperately to break free from the cycle of poverty, oppression and premature death. Theirs is part of the struggle for liberation throughout Latin America and many other parts of our global home. Reflecting with the poor on their situation in the light of the Scriptures has led to a fuller realization that covenant and liberation are two sides of the same coin - liberation is for covenant, and covenant is to consolidate and promote freedom as befits God's family. First comes a synthesis of the biblical covenants, indicating their continuity but also the unique characteristics of each one. Special attention is paid to the new covenant, often reflected in terms of kingdom, community, family and mutual love.Then it is indicated how new light may be drawn from such a central biblical theme in order to view correctly and share personally in today's liberation struggles.

In many countries (part of) the rental housing market is subject to regulations concerning determination of rent and security of tenure. The author provides fresh theoretical analysis of these measures by taking into account special features of the housing market, like indivisibility, mobility cost and incomplete contracts. The impact a rent ceiling has on contracting, the allocation of the housing stock, rationing cost and on rents in the free housing sector is examined. In some cases tenure laws provide for tenure security and rules for the updating of rent while leaving the initial rent for new leases freely negotiable. The analysis shows that the efficiency of the market could be improved through this type of regulation.

This study explores theoretical aspects of translation in a relevance-based framework dealing with communication and cognition and investigates the feasibility of relevance theory, in the light of already existing translations of a legal text and a literary text, if the translators' practical work is involved. Although a number of investigations are available which either deal with aspects of communication and cognition or which focus on the transference of written and spoken material from one language to another, approaches combining whatever seems the best or the most useful from these two areas are still uncommon these days. Thus, on the one hand the present study is a plea for going beyond the more traditional compartmentalisations of linguistic areas; on the other hand, it serves as a repository of findings and insights for critical reflections on translation work in the future.
