Born in 1965 about 100 kilometres from the former imperial porcelain factories of Jingdezhen in China, BaiMing is a multi-facetted visual artist. A professor and lecturer, he isdirector of the Department of Ceramics at the Academy of Art and Designof Qinghua University in Beijing, and of the Shangyu Celadon International Art Centre of Contemporary Ceramics. He also heads two workshops, where he boldly mixes ancestral techniques, traditions and practices with those of international contemporary art. The delicacy of his technique in ceramics, painting and lacquer has revitalised Chinese porcelain, freeing it from its archaic forms. His creations have won major Chinese awards and are recognised by collectors around the world.ChristineShimizu, curator of the exhibition devoted to the artist at the KeramisCentre in Belgium, brings together various authors in this book: Mael Bellec, Antoinette Faÿ-Hallé, Jean-François Fouilhoux, Catherine Noppe and Ludovic Recchia. Jephan de Villiers’ book is an invitation to break away from the alienating burdens of everyday life and immerse ourselves in an imaginary civilisation. Here, we set out with the artist on a journey to encounter a lost world, where nature and culture were once closely entwined, where humanity lived in harmony with the elements.Trees and water are of central importance throughout the artist's work. Whether as a reminder of the origins of life or as testimonies of ancestral beliefs and practices, nothing has been invented in this singular world of sculptures. Everything in his work has been composed and transferred from a forgotten world. His creations are made from materials derived from natural objects that have fallen to the ground: splinters of wood, bark, water chestnuts, rays' eggs, mysterious sea balls washed up by the ocean and fragments of horseshoe crab shells.For the artist, the time he devotes to his work means being alone, in the strictest sense of the word. It is time spent scouring the ground, in search of materials gathered "on the edge of the world". James Joyce, one of the greatest writers of the 20th century, spent several weeks in Ostend during the summer of 1926. In order to escape the oppressive heat of Paris he, his wife Nora and his daughter Lucia chose fashionable Ostend to cool down. From Paris he wrote several letters, mainly to the American Sylvia Beach who had her famous bookshop - Shakespeare and Co. - in Paris, as well as to Briton Harriet Shaw Weaver who supported him financially. During his stay, Joyce takes long walks along the beach, his daughter Lucia takes photographs that are published for the first time, and in a pharmacy, Joyce meets an Irish friend whom he hasn't seen for more than 20 years. During his stay the family undergoes a terrible summer storm which will affect Finnegans Wake, his latest publication.  In one of his letters (dated 11 August 1926) he writes about Ostend: "This is by far the best place we have been in for a summer holiday."
