Instead of examining the impact of media on society, this book explores the impact of society on media. How do communities affect the way media build different issue perspectives or frames? The book adopts a unique community structure approach, using modern national databases, to link selected city characteristics and nationwide newspaper reporting on critical issues.

The studies in this volume support certain common, perhaps universal conclusions about heroes: All cultures have them; all cultures need them; who or what is considered heroic may vary from culture to culture; the heroes of a culture reflect or define culture values; communication is at the heart of hero creation and maintenance. The array of topics associated with heroes is vast in this global, post September 11th, modern media environment. This volume provides a survey and hopefully stimulates consideration of continuity and change with regard to heroes. ""Heroes in a Global World"" is concerned with the role communication processes, practices, and technologies play in developing the form and function of the contemporary hero.

This textbook argues that although corporate media are structurally organized to maximize profits and produce content that generally helps elites achieve their goals; this doesn't mean corporate media have less capacity to facilitate social change than entrepreneurial or other forms of media. The historical evidence and comparative empirical studies presented in this book show that mass media become more, not less, critical of dominant power groups, institutions, and value systems.
