This School presented topics of current interest in high energy physics including Superstrings, Unified Theories and Cosmology.

This volume is a collection of papers presented at the Summer School, ICTP, 14 June - 30 July. Topics covered include: comparing the elementary quark versus the preonic approach to unification, quark matter and nuclear collisions and effective actions and topological string amplitudes.

The proceedings of the Annual Trieste Summer School on High Energy Physics and Cosmology covers many of the leading research areas in these fields. They are valuable resources for active researchers, including advanced graduate students as well as postdoctoral fellows.

In this volume recent developments in the nonperturbative aspects of string theory, duality in N = 1 string compactifications, orientifolds and F-theory as well as the matrix model description of M-theory are reported. The D-brane approach to black holes and their entropy is also discussed.The phenomenological part is devoted to the main fields of present-day astroparticle physics: supersymmetry, neutrino physics and cosmology. The two most important aspects of supersymmetry are covered: Searches for superpartners (G Kane) and mechanisms of supersymmetry breaking (G Dvali).Results from recent neutrino experiments and their implications are presented (S Pakvasa). The central issues of modern cosmology such as inflation (R Brandenberger), formation of topological defects (T Vachaspati) and dark matter (M Kamionkowski) are discussed.

This volume presents introductory lectures on the Standard Model and Higgs physics, as well as QCD. These lectures provided the particle physics background for the main topics of the school: astroparticle physics and modern cosmology.

In this volume, precision tests of the Standard Model and a wide spectrum of physics beyond it, such as supersymmetry, grand unification and the fermion mass problem, are covered. The emphasis is on the areas where new experimental results will lead to significant progress: neutrino physics, CP violation and B physics. The articles written by top level experts in the fields, give a comprehensive view of the state-of-the-art of modern particle physics.

The ICTP has been holding a Summer Workshop in High Energy Physics and Cosmology since 1981. The primary goal of these workshops is to bring together active physicists from around the world, and to provide a platform where the frontier developments in the field are presented by leading workers. The atmosphere for the workshop was active and stimulating and each area was represented by leading physicists in the field.

These lectures give an elementary introduction to the important recent developments of the applications of N=1 supergravity to the construction of unified models of elementary particle interactions. Topics covered include couplings of supergravity with matter, spontaneous symmetry breaking and the super-higgs effect, construction of supergravity unified models, and the phenomenon of SU(2) x U(1) electroweak-symmetry breaking by supergravity. Experimental consequences of N-1 supergravity unified theory, in particular, the possible supersymmetric decays of the W± and Z0 bosons, are also discussed. The treatment presented encompasses a broad class of models, both of the tree breaking as well as the radiative breaking of SU(2) x U(1). Rules of tensor calculus and the explicit construction of the Lagrangian of the Supergravity-matter couplings are given in the appendix.
