This book explores recent developments in the dynamics of invertible circle maps, a rich and captivating topic in one-dimensional dynamics. It focuses on two main classes of invertible dynamical systems on the circle: global diffeomorphisms and smooth homeomorphisms with critical points. The latter is the book's core, reflecting the authors' recent research interests.Organized into four parts and 14 chapters, the content covers rigid rotations, circle homeomorphisms, and the concept of rotation number in the first part. The second part delves into circle diffeomorphisms, presenting classical results. The third part introduces multicritical circle maps—smooth homeomorphisms of the circle with a finite number of critical points. The fourth and final part centers on renormalization theory, analyzing the fine geometric structure of orbits of multicritical circle maps. Complete proofs for several fundamental results in circle dynamics are provided throughout. The book concludes with a list of open questions.Primarily intended for graduate students and young researchers in dynamical systems, this book is also suitable for mathematicians from other fields with an interest in the subject. Prerequisites include familiarity with the content of a standard graduate course in real analysis, along with some understanding of ergodic theory and dynamical systems. Basic knowledge of complex analysis is needed for specific chapters.

The text presents the birational classification of holomorphic foliations of surfaces. It discusses at length the theory developed by L.G. Mendes, M. McQuillan and the author to study foliations of surfaces in the spirit of the classification of complex algebraic surfaces.

This book takes an in-depth look at abelian relations of codimension one webs in the complex analytic setting. In its classical form, web geometry consists in the study of webs up to local diffeomorphisms. A significant part of the theory revolves around the concept of abelian relation, a particular kind of functional relation among the first integrals of the foliations of a web. Two main focuses of the book include how many abelian relations can a web carry and which webs are carrying the maximal possible number of abelian relations. The book offers complete proofs of both Chern’s bound and Trépreau’s algebraization theorem, including all the necessary prerequisites that go beyond elementary complex analysis or basic algebraic geometry. Most of the examples known up to date of non-algebraizable planar webs of maximal rank are discussed in detail. A historical account of the algebraization problem for maximal rank webs of codimension one is also presented.

This text introduces the basic concepts of function spaces and operators, both from the continuous and discrete viewpoints. Fourier and Window Fourier Transforms are introduced and used as a guide to arrive at the concept of Wavelet transform. The fundamental aspects of multiresolution representation, and its importance to function discretization and to the construction of wavelets is also discussed.Emphasis is given on ideas and intuition, avoiding the heavy computations which are usually involved in the study of wavelets. Readers should have a basic knowledge of linear algebra, calculus, and some familiarity with complex analysis. Basic knowledge of signal and image processing is desirable. This text originated from a set of notes in Portuguese that the authors wrote for a wavelet course on the Brazilian Mathematical Colloquium in 1997 at IMPA, Rio de Janeiro.

Hasse-Schmidt Derivations on Grassmann Algebras
With Applications to Vertex Operators

This book provides a comprehensive advanced multi-linear algebra course based on the concept of Hasse-Schmidt derivations on a Grassmann algebra (an analogue of the Taylor expansion for real-valued functions), and shows how this notion provides a natural framework for many ostensibly unrelated subjects: traces of an endomorphism and the Cayley-Hamilton theorem, generic linear ODEs and their Wronskians, the exponential of a matrix with indeterminate entries (Putzer's method revisited), universal decomposition of a polynomial in the product of two monic polynomials of fixed smaller degree, Schubert calculus for Grassmannian varieties, and vertex operators obtained with the help of Schubert calculus tools (Giambelli's formula). Significant emphasis is placed on the characterization of decomposable tensors of an exterior power of a free abelian group of possibly infinite rank, which then leads to the celebrated Hirota bilinear form of the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) hierarchy describing the Plücker embedding of an infinite-dimensional Grassmannian. By gathering ostensibly disparate issues together under a unified perspective, the book reveals how even the most advanced topics can be discovered at the elementary level.

Thisbook presents recent advances on Kobayashi hyperbolicity in complex geometry, especially in connection with projective hypersurfaces. This is a very activefield, not least because of the fascinating relations with complex algebraicand arithmetic geometry. Foundational works of Serge Lang and Paul A. Vojta, among others, resulted in precise conjectures regarding the interplay of theseresearch fields (e.g. existence of Zariski dense entire curves shouldcorrespond to the (potential) density of rational points).Perhapsone of the conjectures which generated most activity in Kobayashi hyperbolicitytheory is the one formed by Kobayashi himself in 1970 which predicts that avery general projective hypersurface of degree large enough does not containany (non-constant) entire curves. Since the seminal work of Green and Griffithsin 1979, later refined by J.-P. Demailly, J. Noguchi, Y.-T. Siu and others, itbecame clear that a possible general strategy to attack this problem was tolook at particular algebraic differential equations (jet differentials) thatevery entire curve must satisfy. This has led to some several spectacularresults. Describing the state of the art around this conjecture is the maingoal of this work.
