Consistent advances in biometrics help to address problems that plague traditional human recognition methods and offer significant promise for applications in security as well as general convenience. In particular, newly evolving systems can measure multiple physiological or behavioral traits and thereby increase overall reliability that much more. Multimodal Biometrics provides an accessible, focused examination of the science and technology behind multimodal human recognition systems, as well as their ramifications for security systems and other areas of application. After clearly introducing multibiometric systems, the book demonstrates the noteworthy advantages of these systems over their traditional and unimodal counterparts. In addition, the work describes the various scenarios possible when consolidating evidence from multiple biometric systems. This authoritative, comprehensive volume on multimodal biometric systems concisely and clearly outlines their great promise for higher reliability than conventional human verification systems. It is an essential resource for researchers, professionals, and students who will need to know and use the concepts, principles, and methods of advanced biometrics.

Human Identification Based on Gait is the first book to address gait as a biometric. Biometrics is now in a unique position where it affects most people's lives. This is especially true of "gait", which is one of the most recent biometrics. Recognizing people by the way they walk and run implies analyzing movement which, in turn, implies analyzing sequences of images, thus requiring memory and computational performance that became available only recently. Human Identification Based on Gait introduces developments from distinguished researchers within this relatively new area of biometrics. This book clearly establishes how human gait is biometric.Human Identification Based on Gait is structured to meet the needs of professionals in industry, as well as advanced-level students in computer science.

Face recognition has been actively studied over the past decade and continues to be a big research challenge. Just recently, researchers have begun to investigate face recognition under unconstrained conditions. Unconstrained Face Recognition provides a comprehensive review of this biometric, especially face recognition from video, assembling a collection of novel approaches that are able to recognize human faces under various unconstrained situations. The underlying basis of these approaches is that, unlike conventional face recognition algorithms, they exploit the inherent characteristics of the unconstrained situation and thus improve the recognition performance when compared with conventional algorithms.Unconstrained Face Recognition is structured to meet the needs of a professional audience of researchers and practitioners in industry. This volume is also suitable for advanced-level students in computer science.

Biometrics such as fingerprint, face, gait, iris, voice and signature, recognizes one's identity using his/her physiological or behavioural characteristics. Among these biometric signs, fingerprint has been researched the longest period of time, and shows the most promising future in real-world applications. However, because of the complex distortions among the different impressions of the same finger, fingerprint recognition is still a challenging problem. "Computational Algorithms For Fingerprint Recognition" presents an entire range of novel computational algorithms for fingerprint recognition. These include feature extraction, indexing, matching, classification and performance prediction/validation methods, which have been compared with state-of-art algorithms and found to be effective and efficient on real-world data. All the algorithms have been evaluated on NIST-4 database from National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).Specific algorithms addressed include: learned template based minutiae extraction algorithm; triplets of minutiae based fingerprint indexing algorithm; genetic algorithm based fingerprint matching algorithm; genetic programming based feature learning algorithm for fingerprint classification; comparison of classification and indexing based approaches for identification; and fundamental fingerprint matching performance prediction analysis and its validation. "Computational Algorithms For Fingerprint Recognition" is designed for a professional audience composed of researchers and practitioners in industry. This book is also suitable as a secondary text for graduate-level students in computer science and engineering.

Computer vision algorithms for the analysis of video data, is obtained from a camera aimed to the user of an interactive system. It's is potentially useful to enhance the interface between users and machines. These image sequences provide information from which machines can identify and keep track of their users, recognize their facial expressions, gestures and complement other forms of human-computer interfaces. Facial Analysis from Continuous Video with Applications to Human Computer Interfaces will present a learning technique based on information-theoretic discrimination which is used to construct face and facial feature detectors. The book will also describe a real-time system for face and facial feature detection and tracking in continuous video. Lastly, this book will present a probabilistic framework for embedded face and facial expression recognition from image sequences. Facial Analysis from Continuous Video with Applications to Human Computer Interfaces is designed for a professional audience, composed of researchers and practitioners in industry. This book is also suitable as a secondary text for graduate-level students in computer science and engineering.

Palmprint Authentication is the first book to provide a comprehensive introduction to palmprint technologies. It reveals automatic biometric techniques for personal identification using palmprint, from the approach based on offline palmprint images, to the current state-of-the-art algorithm using online palmprint images. Palmprint Authentication provides the reader with a basic concept of Palmprint Authentication. It also includes an in-depth discussion of Palmprint Authentication technologies, a detailed description of Palmprint Authentication systems, and an up-to-date coverage of how these issues are developed. This book is suitable for different levels of readers: those who want to learn more about palmprint technology, and those who wish to understand, participate, and/or develop a palmprint authentication system. Palmprint Authentication is effectively a handbook for biometric research and development. Graduate students and researchers in computer science, electrical engineering, systems science, and information technology will all find it uniquely useful, not only as a reference book, but also as a text book. Researchers and practitioners in industry, and R&D laboratories working in the fields of security system design, biometrics, immigration, law enforcement, control, and pattern recognition will also benefit from this volume.
