The investigations of multiscale problems in multibody system contacts is a most interesting and timely topic which is the subject of intensive research for more than a decade. Many questions have already been answered and the mechanically sound description and simulation is increasingly being applied to practical engineering problems. The IUTAM Symposium on ”Multiscale Problems in Multibody System Contacts” in Stuttgart, Germany which was held February 20-23, 2006 facilitated discussions between researchers active in the ?eld and enabled us to review the current state of the subject, and to identify the important topics which require further e?ort. Multiscale problems occur very naturally in contact mechanics. Typically thecontactforcesandstressesareveryhighandthey aretransmittedwithina veryshortperiodoftime.This leadstoquestions,e.g.howtheslowrigidbody motion and the fast motion changes can be considered simultaneously or how interface e?ects couple with wave propagation and the large-scale motion. The purpose of the symposium was to provide a basis for discussion and exchange of new concepts and ideas between scientists from all over Europe and the world. Emphasis was placed also on sharing algorithms and concepts with young researchers who only recently entered the ?eld of mechanical c- tacts.

Turbulence remains one of the most challenging problems in classical physics. The papers collected in this volume are the proceedings of an IUTAM S- posium on turbulence, entitled Computational Physics and New Perspectives in Turbulence. The symposium was held in September 2006, at Nagoya U- versity in Japan. The last few years have witnessed a rapid and dramatic rise in our ability to compute highly complex physical systems. As in other ?elds, this has had a major impact on the way in which we approach the problem of turbulence, opening up a new phase of research by providing an opportunity to study the nature of fully-developed turbulence in unprecedented detail. Leading experts in turbulence were brought together at this Symposium to exchange ideas and discuss, in the light of the recent progress in computational methods, new perspectives in our understanding of turbulence. The Symposium also fostered a vigorous interaction between those who pursue computations, and those concerned with developments in experiment and theory. There were 104 participants representing 13 countries, and the presen- tionsandconsequentdebateextendedoveraperiodoffourdays.Throughout, emphasis was placed on the fundamental physical interpretation of turbulent phenomenon. The topics covered included: (i) computational physics and the theoryofcanonicalturbulent?ows;(ii)experimentalapproachestofundam- tal problems in turbulence; (iii) turbulence modeling and numerical methods; and (iv) geophysical and astrophysical turbulence.

This work brings together previously unpublished notes contributed by participants of the IUTAM Symposium on Hamiltonian Dynamics, Vortex Structures, Turbulence (Moscow, 25-30 August 2006). The study of vortex motion is of great interest to fluid and gas dynamics: since all real flows are vortical in nature, applications of the vortex theory are extremely diverse, many of them (e.g. aircraft dynamics, atmospheric and ocean phenomena) being especially important. The last few decades have shown that serious possibilities for progress in the research of real turbulent vortex motions are essentially related to the combined use of mathematical methods, computer simulation and laboratory experiments. These approaches have led to a series of interesting results which allow us to study these processes from new perspectives. Based on this principle, the papers collected in this proceedings volume present new results on theoretical and applied aspects of the processes of formation and evolution of various flows, wave and coherent structures in gas and fluid. Much attention is given to the studies of nonlinear regular and chaotic regimes of vortex interactions, advective and convective motions. The contributors are leading scientists engaged in fundamental and applied aspects of the above mentioned fields.

The Symposium brought together many of the world's experts in fluid mechanics, microfabrication and control theory to discover the synergy that can lead to real advances and perhaps find ways in which collaborative projects may proceed. The meeting website shows the high profile of the meeting (IUTAM sponsorship brings a very considerable cachet: keynote speakers are leaders in their fields; representatives from industry are from companies who have key requirements in flow control -- Airbus, BAE SYSTEMS, Rolls Royce, MTU, ONERA, Renault, Peugeot-Citroen -- gathered largely from the aerospace and automotive communities. A key driver was the improvement in flow efficiency to reduce drag, and thereby emissions arising from transport. One session was dedicated to industrial representatives offering views on current problems and the identification of appropriate MEMS technology to provide solutions. About 65 papers were presented. Academics from North America, the UK, France, Germany, Switzerland, Spain, Italy, Israel, Australia and China attended.

Proceedings of the IUTAM Symposium on Fluid- Structure Interaction in Ocean Engineering, held in Hamburg, July 23-26, 2007.The study of gravity driven water waves interacting with fixed or freely floating objects is an active and important field of research in ocean engineering. The accurate prediction of large amplitude ship motions or of marine structures in severe seas is still a delicate problem in the field of fluid-structure interaction. While three-dimensional panel methods have reached the state of maturity in linear sea-keeping analysis, the original problem, governed by strongly nonlinear boundary conditions, is far from being solved efficiently. The principal nonlinearities are associated with the variable wetted surface of the ship hull or the floating body and with the nonlinear hydrodynamic conditions on the free surface. Moreover, marine structures often must be modelled as multibody systems rather than a single body. This causes additional problems due to wave slamming on floating and fixed structures. Furthermore, problems such as coupled structural behavior of submerged or floating systems as well as various wind effects have to be considered for the proper design of offshore systems. This book collects contributions from leading scientists working on the following topics: Ocean waves, probabilistic models of sea waves, fluid-loading on structures including pipes, cables, drill-strings etc., behavior of floating systems, stability and capsizing of ships, coupled structural behavior, sloshing in tanks, CFD validation and verification.

During its 2004 meeting in Warsaw the General Assembly of the International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (IUTAM) decided to support a proposal of the Georgian National Committee to hold in Tbilisi (Georgia), on April 23-27, 2007, the IUTAM Symposium on the Relation of Shell, Plate, Beam, and 3D Models, dedicated to the Centenary of Ilia Vekua. The sci- ti?c organization was entrusted to an international committee consisting of Philipppe G. Ciarlet (Hong Kong), the late Anatoly Gerasimovich Gorshkov (Russia),JornHansen(Canada),GeorgeV.Jaiani(Georgia,Chairman),Re- hold Kienzler (Germany), Herbert A. Mang (Austria), Paolo Podio-Guidugli (Italy), and Gangan Prathap (India). The main topics to be included in the scienti?c programme were c- sen to be: hierarchical, re?ned mathematical and technical models of shells, plates, and beams; relation of 2D and 1D models to 3D linear, non-linear and physical models; junction problems. The main aim of the symposium was to thoroughly discuss the relations of shell, plate, and beam models to the 3D physicalmodels.Inparticular,peculiaritiesofcuspedshells,plates,andbeams were to be emphasized and special attention paid to junction, multibody and ?uid-elastic shell (plate, beam) interaction problems, and their applications. The expected contributions of the invited participants were anticipated to be theoretical, practical, and numerical in character.

This volume constitutes the Proceedings of the IUTAM Symposium on ‘Scaling in Solid Mechanics’, held in Cardiff from 25th to 29th June 2007. The Symposium was convened to address and place on record topical issues in theoretical, experimental and computational aspects of scaling approaches to solid mechanics and related elds. Scaling is a rapidly expanding area of research having multidisciplinary - plications. The expertise represented in the Symposium was accordingly very wide, and many of the world’s greatest authorities in their respective elds participated. Scaling methods apply wherever there is similarity across many scales or one need to bridge different scales, e. g. the nanoscale and macroscale. The emphasis in the Symposium was upon fundamental issues such as: mathematical foundations of scaling methods based on transformations and connections between multi-scale approaches and transformations. The Symposium remained focussed on fundam- tal research issues of practical signicance. The considered topics included damage accumulation, growth of fatigue cracks, development of patterns of aws in earth’s core and inice, abrasiveness of rough surfaces, and soon. The Symposium consisted of forty-two oral presentations. All of the lectures were invited. Full record of the programme appears as an Appendix. Several of the lectures are not represented, mainly because of prior commitments to publish elsewhere. The proceedings p- vide a reasonable picture of understanding as it exists at present. The Symposium showed that scaling methods cannot be reduced solely to dimensional analysis and fractal approaches.

Inelastic media constitute a rich source of interesting and important problems in theoretical, experimental and computationalmechanics. Solid cellular materials (foams, lattice materials, honeycombs, etc.) are attractive and have resulted in the creation of an active subject for structural, mechanical and material scientists in recent years. Indeed, constant progress in the manufacturing techniques are improving their properties and reducing their costs; and mass productions and industrial applications are beginning.
