The author of this book, Gerard Lukken, has always believed that liturgy is not something which is unchangeable or sacrosanct, something to be imposed 'from above'; rather he believes that it must gain shape and content from the situation in which believers find themselves. This involvement is reflected in the hundreds of publications which have flowed from his pen. Lukken's extensive writings offer not only an exciting reflection on the challenges (such as secularization and the decrease in church-going) confronting church and believers, but also on the problems they have faced in celebrating their faith in recent decades. Moreover, his work represents a model for methodological renewal. The key concepts in his theological approach and his evaluation are 'anthropology' and 'semiotics'. These two aspects have left their marks on the organisation of this book which is a selective compilation drawn from his earlier publications. This collection consists of nineteen studies which have lost nothing of their topicality and most of which are now being translated into English, French or German for the first time.By crossing the frontier of language in such a way the editors wish not only to honour a leading specialist in liturgy but also to contribute to academic research into liturgy throughout the world. Gerard Lukken (1933) studied at the Diocesan Seminary in Haaren (Noord-Brabant), the Pontificia Universita in Rome, and the Institut Superieur de Liturgie in Paris. He was professor of liturgy and sacramental theology (from 1967) and director of the Liturgical Institute (from 1992) at the Theological Faculty of Tilburg until his retirement in 1994.

This book is the product of a relatively long history of pilgrimage research in a Dutch theological setting. It is intended as a report for an international audience on this long-running programme.Two lines are followed in the book. The first is the track of liturgical studies, in which an historical, European ethnological and anthropological approach has predominated. The second is a social science track, with specific content coming from psychology of religion. The combination of these two lines has been extremely fruitful.In addition to results of various surveys of contemporary pilgrimage practice and the expansion of research into ritual and cultural context in which modern pilgrims find themselves, special attention is also bestowed on historiographic issues involved in orienting pilgrimage research, and its theoretical and methodological aspects.The places of pilgrimage examined here are Wittem, Dokkum and Amsterdam in The Netherlands, Banneux in Belgium, Lourdes and La Salette in France, and Santiago de Compostela in Spain. The central question which informs the whole study is to what extent one can perhaps speak of a new type of pilgrim today, the "modern pilgrim".

The integration of liturgical action into culture is an irrevocable process, based on contemporary social developments. In this process an important role is reserved for music. Music is constantly challenged to give artistic shape to liturgical texts in an adequate way. Moreover, its expressive richness is being rediscovered presently, and music itself is increasingly being experienced as a liturgical sign. Therefore it is an essential characteristic of continually self-renewing liturgical action that within it the community consciously makes more and more use of the language of the muse. The symposium A"Liturgy and the language of the musesA", lectures which are collected in this book, was devoted to the design of the most important component of the celebration of the Eucharist, the eucharistic prayer. All the lectures touch in one way or another on the consequences for our liturgical action of today's desire for a more inspired design for Liturgy, and in particular for eucharistic prayer, in language and form. An effort is made to formulate a more precise answer to the question of how the essential elements of this prayer can be expressed optimally.

Christmas exerts an enormous attraction today even apart from its Christian character as a celebration of the incarnation of God in the Person of Jesus. Even marginal or indifferent Christians crowd the churches on Christmas Eve and in highly commercialized and technologized Western societies the Christmas season is celebrated with enthousiasm. Yet Christmas entered the calendar of feasts relatively late, by 336 C.E., and the reason for its introduction and quick spread remain speculative and based on fragmentary evidence. Towards the Origins of Christmas addresses both the contemporary Western celebration of Christmas, and its deep historical roots in the church of the fourth century. The book presents a thorough investigation of the patristic texts and evidence cited by liturgical scholars in the late 19th and 20th centuries to support two main theories: the Calculation theory and the History of Religions theory. This historical research is set in the framework of the contemporary experience of Christmas; the dynamics of time and the liturgical year; the inculturation of liturgy; and underlying elements of dualism and patriarchal power paradigms which linger beneath the often commercial and sentimental character of Christmas today. Suzan K. Roll was born in Clarence Center, New York (USA) in 1952. She holds degrees in classical languages and pastoral theology, and in 1993 received a Ph. D. from the Faculty of Theology of the Catholic University of Louvain (Leuven), Belgium, summa cum laude with the gratulations of the jury. She has thaught and published in the field of liturgy, sacraments, pastoral theology, and presently teaches at Christ the King Seminary, Buffalo, New York (USA).

La liturgie permet-elle aux chrétiens d’être des acteurs à part entière? La «participation active» a déjà beaucoup apporté pour faciliter l’implication de tous et chacun dans la liturgie, mais il est possible d’aller plus loin en mettant en relief le sacerdoce des baptisés. Ce sacerdoce s’exerce dans le quotidien, mais inclut aussi la liturgie par le simple fait de participer à une célébration. Comment amener les membres de nos communautés à en prendre mieux conscience? Dans cet ouvrage, l’auteur propose de ritualiser davantage le sacerdoce des baptisés dans la liturgie, de façon malléable et flexible, afin que cette dignité de tous les chrétiens devienne plus concrète pour eux. Pour explorer les fondements théologiques d’une telle ritualisation, il prend pour point de départ le concept d’«agent ritualisé» de Catherine Bell, spécialiste en ritual studies, qui veut qu’un sujet qui met en œuvre la ritualité qui le constitue se laisse façonner par son contexte et le façonne à son tour. Une analyse de l’agent ritualisé est mise en interaction avec la pensée de quatre théologiens de la sacramentaire faite en postmodernité, soit Louis-Marie Chauvet – le principal auteur considéré – Andrea Grillo, Kenan B. Osborne et David N. Power, de façon à articuler ce que pourrait être un «agent ritualisé chrétien». Cette démarche permet d’articuler ce qui se passe chez un chrétien qui ritualise le sacerdoce des baptisés dans la liturgie : au sein de mouvements corporels traditionnels ou nouveaux, prévus ou spontanés, il peut saisir les moments d’offrande d’une célébration afin de s’offrir au Père, dans le Christ, sous l’impulsion de l’Esprit, en faveur des autres.

Explorations of an Emerging Ritual Repertoire

People increasingly look to rituals after a disaster. A silent procession and a memorial service are carefully and observantly organised, preparations are begun for a lasting monument in memory of the victims, or people keep up the tradition of an annual commemoration. Remarkably enough, this ritual repertoire has received hardly any attention from researchers. This book is a report on the first exploration of these rituals which emerged particularly in the 1990s. The exploration focuses on the situation in the Netherlands. From the case studies analyzed a strikingly coherent and well-organised repertoire comes to light, which has become established in a rather short time. There appears to be interaction with both Dutch and international contexts (i.e., influence from the memorial rites after the death of Diana, Princess of Wales, the 'Dutroux affair' in Belgium, and the rites after a series of episodes of street violence in the Netherlands), as well as with previous, more divergent ritual traces of a Christian-liturgical, general-religious and profane-secular nature. This study more particularly looks at disaster ritual from the perspective of contemporary ritual dynamics. As such, it makes a contribution to gauging the ritual-liturgical milieu today. To this end, the central concepts of disaster and ritual are first defined. Next follows an assessment, first in general through a survey of disasters in the Netherlands and other countries, then on the basis of five Dutch case studies, each of which illuminates a particular theme in disaster ritual, and two international case studies (the 'Estonia' ferryboat disaster and September 11). Then comes a more broadly conceived contextual and analytic chapter in which the general context of contemporary ritual developments is elaborated. The closing chapter has the nature of the familiar 'synthesis and perspective'.
