The great number of varied approaches to hydrodynamic stability theory appear as a bulk of results whose classification and discussion are well-known in the literature. Several books deal with one aspect of this theory alone (e.g. the linear case, the influence of temperature and magnetic field, large classes of globally stable fluid motions etc.). The aim of this book is to provide a complete mathe matical treatment of hydrodynamic stability theory by combining the early results of engineers and applied mathematicians with the recent achievements of pure mathematicians. In order to ensure a more operational frame to this theory I have briefly outlined the main results concerning the stability of the simplest types of flow. I have attempted several definitions of the stability of fluid flows with due consideration of the connections between them. On the other hand, as the large number of initial and boundary value problems in hydrodynamic stability theory requires appropriate treat ments, most of this book is devoted to the main concepts and methods used in hydrodynamic stability theory. Open problems are expressed in both mathematical and physical terms.

A. Audience. This treatise (consisting of the present VoU and of VoUI, to be published) is primarily intended to be a textbook for a core course in mathematics at the advanced undergraduate or the beginning graduate level. The treatise should also be useful as a textbook for selected stu dents in honors programs at the sophomore and junior level. Finally, it should be of use to theoretically inclined scientists and engineers who wish to gain a better understanding of those parts of mathemat ics that are most likely to help them gain insight into the conceptual foundations of the scientific discipline of their interest. B. Prerequisites. Before studying this treatise, a student should be familiar with the material summarized in Chapters 0 and 1 of Vol.1. Three one-semester courses in serious mathematics should be sufficient to gain such fa miliarity. The first should be an introduction to contemporary math ematics and should cover sets, families, mappings, relations, number systems, and basic algebraic structures. The second should be an in troduction to rigorous real analysis, dealing with real numbers and real sequences, and with limits, continuity, differentiation, and integration of real functions of one real variable. The third should be an intro duction to linear algebra, with emphasis on concepts rather than on computational procedures. C. Organization.

This publication reports the proceedings of a one-day seminar on The Application and Numerical Solution of Integral Equations held at the Australian National University on Wednesday, November 29, 1978. It was organized by the Computing Research Group, Australian National University and the Division of Mathematics and Statistics, CSIRO. Due to unforeseen circumstances, Dr M.L. Dow was unable to participate. At short notice, Professor D. Elliott reviewed Cauchy singular integral equations, but a paper on same is not included in these proceedings. The interested reader is referred to the recent translation of V.V. Ivanov, The Theory of Approximate Methods and their Application to the Numerical Solution of Singular Integral Equations, Noordhoff International Publishers, Leyden, 1976. An attempt was made to structure the program to the extent that the emphasis was on the numerical solution of integral equations for which known applications exist along with explanations of how and why integral equation formalisms arise. In addition, the programme reflected the broad classification of most integral equations as either singular or non singular, as either Fredholm or Volterra and as either first or second kind.

The present monograph has points in common with two branches of analysis. One of them is the variational-difference method (the finite element method), the other is the constructive theory of functions. The starting point is the construction of special classes of coordinate functions for the variational-difference method. It is based on elementary transformations .of the independent variables of given "primitive" functions. After the construction of the coordinate functions, the next step is to approximate functions of a given class by linear combinations of the coordinate functions, and to derive in some appropriate norm an estimate of the error. Clearly, this is a problem closely connected with the constructive theory of functions. The monograph contains 11 chapters. Chapter I discusses Courant's basic idea which is central to the construction of variational-difference methods. One of Courant's examples, from which the notion of a primitive function follows naturally, is examined in some detail. The general definition of a primitive function and the method of construction for the corresponding coordinate functions are given and discussed. Chapters II-VI are more closely connected with the constructive theory of functions. The completeness of the coordinate systems defined in Chapter I are studied, as well as the order of approximation obtained through the use of linear combinations of these functions. Their completeness in Sobolev spaces are examined in Chapter II, while related orders of approximation are derived in Chapter III.

The investigation of many mathematical problems is significantly simplified if it is possible to reduce them to equations involving continuous or com pletely continuous operators in function spaces. In particular, this is true for non-linear boundary value problems and for integro-differential and integral equations. To effect a transformation to equations with continuous or completely continuous operators, it is usually necessary to reduce the original problem to one involving integral equations. Here, negative and fractional powers of those unbounded differential operators which constitute 'principal parts' of the original problem, are used in an essential way. Next there is chosen or constructed a function space in which the corresponding integral oper ator possesses sufficiently good properties. Once such a space is found, the original problem can often be analyzed by applying general theorems (Fredholm theorems in the study of linear equations, fixed point principles in the study of non-linear equations, methods of the theory of cones in the study of positive solutions, etc.). In other words, the investigation of many problems is effectively divided into three independent parts: transformation to an integral equation, investi gation of the corresponding integral expression as an operator acting in function spaces, and, finally, application of general methods of functional analysis to the investigation of the linear and non-linear equations.
