The Etude magazine was established in 1883 by Theodore Presser with $250 saved from his income as a music teacher. The subsequent history of the magazine and the Theodore Presser Company is one of the great entrepreneurial success stories of American music. The Etude remains one of the longest-lived music magazines in American history and is still a ubiquitous presence in flea markets and online auctions.In the early years, each issue published roughly five or six musical scores, but by the 1930's there were upwards of twenty compositions published each month. The resulting list of repertoire comprises well over 10,000 musical compositions in an eclectic range of styles and difficulty levels. The major composers of Western art music appear side by side with a broad range of popular composers, including a strong representation of American and female composers.This rich resource has never been indexed and has thus been virtually inaccessible to scholars and performers, who now have access to three quarters of a century of music in this valuable repository of scores.

The University of Louisville's annual Grawemeyer Award for Music Composition is the largest monetary award offered in its field. The international prize is offered for outstanding achievement by a living composer in a large musical genre, such as choral, orchestral, chamber, electronic, song-cycle, dance, opera, musical theater, or extended solo work. Since the award was first offered in 1985, the Dwight Anderson Memorial Music Library—one of the largest new music collections in North America—has housed the competition submissions. Concluding with an index, this catalog increases awareness of this collection and acknowledges the work of these important composers and their consequence to recent music history.

The latest volume in the Music Library Association's Index and Bibliography series, Analyses of Nineteenth- and Twentieth-Century Music, 1940-2000, features over 9,000 references to analyses of works by more than 1,000 composers of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. References that address form, harmony, melody, rhythm, and other structural elements of musical compositions have been compiled into this valuable resource.This update of Arthur Wenk's well-known bibliography, last published in 1987, includes all the original entries from that work, along with additional references to analyses through 2000. International in scope, the bibliography covers writings in English, French, German, Italian, and other European languages, and draws from 167 periodicals as well as important theses, dissertations, books, and Festschriften. References are arranged alphabetically by composer, and include subheadings for specific works and genres.
