An integrated approach to environmental data management is necessitated by the complexity of the environmental problems that need to be addressed, coupled with the interdisciplinary approach that needs to be adopted to solve them. Agenda 21 of the Rio Environmental Conference mandated international programmes and organizations to take steps to develop common data and information management plans, and steps have been taken in this direction. The key word that defines the framework of this text is "integration". The book establishes the basics of integrated approaches and covers environmental data management systems within that framework, covering all aspects of data management, from objectives and constraints, design of data collection networks, statistical and physical sampling, remote sensing and GIS, databases, reliability of data, data analysis, and the transformation of data into information.

The risks dealt with in this study are set in the context of current radioactive contamination issues in the Arctic, the operation and infrastructure of the Russian Nuclear fleet, and the world-wide decommissioning of nuclear submarines. The risks involve those of spent nuclear fuel, and low and intermediate level liquid and solid wastes. Risk assessment and monitoring techniques are also dealt with.
Air Pollution in the Ural Mountains
Environmental, Health and Policy Aspects - Proceedings of the NATO Advanced Research Workshop on Air Pollution in the Ural Mountains, Magnitogorsk, Russia, 26-30 May 1997

The metals industry was established in the Ural Mountains over two centuries ago. Seventy years ago, the town of Magnitogorsk was established, with US and Western assistance, to exploit the iron ore there. It became a symbol of USSR industry - and is now a symbol of air pollution. This volume describes the pollution in the region and the steps being taken to combat it.
Conservation of the Biological Diversity as a Prerequisite for Sustainable Development in the Black Sea Region

The countries of the Black Sea region are beset by a great number of problems: there are many large cities along the coast; intensive agriculture is practised in the region; great rivers such as the Danube and the Dnieper carry pollution from a large part of Europe; and the lowlands are threatened by flooding from the rivers, wind-induced surges, and future sea-level rise due to global warming. Any integrated, sustainable development of the region will require an interdisciplinary approach, which the present book reflects. Contributions range from the monitoring of biological diversity through the influence of tourism on marine and coastal ecosystems to environmental economics. The problem also has an international dimension: only by interdisciplinary, international co-operation can the environment of the Black Sea region be conserved for future generations.

The protection of the environment is one of the most important problems facing us today. Reliable and robust strategies for keeping pollution caused by harmful chemicals under safe levels have to be developed and used routinely. Large mathematical models, incorporating all important physical and chemical processes, can solve this task, but the computational burden is huge. The papers presented here describe some of the difficult problems that have to be solved during the development of large scale air pollution models, and different ways to solve them. The work involves combined research by specialists in the fields of environmental modelling, numerical analysis and scientific computing. Further, if models are to run in real time (which may be vital in the case of accidental hazardous releases), then new and efficient methods that harness the potential power of parallel supercomputers must be developed, so that actual computing speed starts to approach the maximum available performance. The articles should be understandable by specialists in the field of air pollution modelling, as well as specialists in the many other related areas.
