World Englishes in the 21st Century
New Perspectives and Challenges to the Dynamic Model

Twenty years after Edgar W. Schneider's publication of the Dynamic Model, the field of World Englishes is as vibrant as ever. The further spread and entrenchment of English around the world as a result of globalisation but also localisation tendencies and, in particular, the spread of the language and its multiple varieties through the new media, has led to even further dispersion and contact scenarios, many of which challenge early conceptualisations of the World Englishes paradigm. This volume is dedicated to new perspectives, approaches, and developments in the field, how they fit in with earlier research in the paradigm, how they can be conceptualised, and which challenges they bring along. In addition, the collection showcases some of the methodological diversity in and the transdisciplinary nature of modern World Englishes research.

This book adopts an interdisciplinary approach to the study of cultural and linguistic appropriation. It explores the use of Jamaican Creole phonetic and morphosyntactic features by Jamaican and non-Jamaican reggae and dancehall artists as well as Jamaicans' evaluations of this linguistic behaviour. While positive attitudes prevail, some Jamaicans take a rather negative stance and perceive the use of Jamiacan Creole as inauthentic, misrepresentative and stereotyping. The findings of Jamaican Creole in Global Reggae and Dancehall Performances emphasise the importance of bringing together quantitative data on underlying patterns of language use and qualitative interview data on language perceptions and attitudes. Gerfer demonstrates that in a world of ongoing globalisation, World Englishes may become imitation-worthy codes which artists all across the globe use more or less proficiently and convincingly in their music performances.

Bringing together an interdisciplinary range of leading researchers, this book bridges gaps in urban research by combining methods from linguistics, geography and computational humanities and by exploring different data sets to understand the complexities of language behaviour in urban spaces. The equipment and arrangement of space situates where people live and work. It influences mobility, interactions, networks, identities and connectedness, reflected in and reinforced by language: Communities manifest themselves through the choice of language or linguistic variants in multilingual contexts. On the level of discourse, language reveals attitudes towards others as well as perceptions and evaluations of space. Geography can describe the physical space with remote sensing and GIS data. In computational humanities, language models are developed to perform topic modelling and sentiment analysis. The book demonstrates how established methodologies from across disciplines combined with a broader perspective on established concepts and methodologies from world Englishes will advance and complement linguistic research in this field. Drawing on case studies from various megacities, densely populated city-states and capitals around the world including London, Edinburgh, New York, Tokyo, Singapore, Hong Kong, Davao City, Accra, and Mexico City, it provides important insights into multilingual urban spaces in terms of new methodological approaches and results.
