This book provides the reader with all the tools necessary to implement modern error-processing schemes. It assumes only a basic knowledge of linear algebra and develops the mathematical theory in parallel with the codes. Central to the text are worked examples which motivate and explain the theory. The book is in four parts. The first introduces the basic ideas of coding theory. The second and third parts cover the theory of finite fields and give a detailed treatment of BCH and Reed-Solomon codes. These parts are linked by their use of Euclid's algorithm as a central technique. The fourth part is devoted to Goppa codes, both classical and geometric, concluding with the Skorobogatov-Vladut error processor. A special feature of this part is a simplified (but rigorous) treatment of the geometry of curves.

Algebraic coding theory is a new and rapidly developing subject, motivated by immediate practical applications, but also rich in mathematical structure. This book provides an elementary yet rigorous introduction to the theory of error-correcting codes.

Formal specification is the name given to the use of discrete mathematics in computer science for describing the function of both hardware and software systems. Poor specification often gives rise to severe problems in software and hardware installation. This textbook is an introduction to both the theory and practice of formal specification, and this new edition includes two new chapters on Z, one giving a number of small examples in Z, the other covering design and Z. Prerequisites in this edition have been kept to a minimum since Professor Ince is at pains to develop the techniques of requirement analysis and discrete mathematics that are needed. Throughout the book are numerous worked examples and exercises which include many real examples of software and computer systems.

Substantially revised, this authoritative study covers the standard finite difference methods of parabolic, hyperbolic, and elliptic equations, and includes the concomitant theoretical work on consistency, stability, and convergence. The new edition includes revised and greatly expanded sections on stability based on the Lax-Richtmeyer definition, the application of Pade approximants to systems of ordinary differential equations for parabolic and hyperbolic equations, and a considerably improved presentation of iterative methods. A fast-paced introduction to numerical methods, this will be a useful volume for students of mathematics and engineering, and for postgraduates and professionals who need a clear, concise grounding in this discipline.

The spirit and aim of this book is to present a compact introduction to the basic combinatorial tools - such as recurrence relations, generating functions, incidence matrices, and the inclusion-exclusion principle - that will give the reader a flavour of the distinctive characteristics of this attractive and increasingly important branch of mathematics.A studly of block designs is followed by a brief mention of applications to coding theory. In this new edition, Steiner triple systems are constructed and S(5,8,24) is obtained via the Golay code of length 24. The final chapter combines together the three combinatorial structures of the Leech lattice, the Golay codes, and Steiner systems. Also in this edition, an application of the marriage theorem to score sequences of tournaments has been included.

The study of the dynamics of fluids is a central theme of modern applied mathematics. It is used to model a vast range of physical phenomena and plays a vital role in science and engineering. This textbook provides a clear introduction to both the theory and application of fluid dynamics, and will be suitable for all undergraduates coming to the subject for the first time. Prerequisites are few: a basic knowledge of vector calculus, complex analysis, and simple methods for solving differential equations are all that is needed. Throughout, numerous exercises (with hints and answers) illustrate the main ideas and serve to consolidate the reader's understanding of the subject. The book's wide scope (including inviscid and viscous flows, waves in fluids, boundary layer flow, and instability in flow) and frequent references to experiments and the history of the subject, ensures that this book provides a comprehensive and absorbing introduction to the mathematical study of fluid behaviour.

Techniques of matrix theory find wide application throughout engineering and the physical, life, and social sciences. Consequently, matrix methods comprise an important component in any 'tool kit' of applied mathematics. This wide-ranging textbook provides a clearly written and up-to-date account of these methods, suitable for both undergraduates and more advanced students. The aim is to provide a down-to-earth approach with results illustrated by many examples drawn from the areas of application. The range of topics covered is large: from basic matrix algebra to advanced concepts such as generalized inverses and Hadamard matrices, and applications to error-correcting codes, control theory, and linear programming. In addition, the book contains numerous exercises, together with answers, making it ideal for students in any field where matrices are used.

Systems that evolve with time occur frequently in nature and modelling the behaviour of such systems provides an important application of mathematics. These systems can be completely deterministic, but it may be possible too to control their behaviour by intervention through 'controls'. The theory of optimal control is concerned with determining such controls which, at minimum cost, either direct the system along a given trajectory or enable it to reach a given point in its state space. This textbook is a straightforward introduction to the theory of optimal control with an emphasis on presenting many different applications. Professor Hocking has taken pains to ensure that the theory is developed to display the main themes of the arguments but without using sophisticated mathematical tools. Problems in this setting can arise across a wide range of subjects and there are illustrative examples of systems from as diverse fields as dynamics, economics, population control, and medicine. Throughout there are many worked examples, and numerous exercises (with solutions) are provided.
