This edited monograph aims to unpack the discourse surrounding global security from a range of multi-disciplinary perspectives. While various aspects of security such as great power politics, border security, cybersecurity, energy security, and terrorism often absorb the main focus of academic, political, economic and media attention, this book emphasises the significance of a holistic approach and multi-level analysis of security in order to attain a comprehensive insight and understanding. The book explores a range of perspectives, including ontological security, early childhood intervention, migration, cyber peace, the use of autonomous weapons and emerging technologies, as well as critically engaging security from feminist and multicultural perspectives. Overall, the collection intends to raise questions rather than offer answers to the complex and perpetual question of local and global security in all its forms. The contributors are primarily composed of a team of RMIT University researchers within the School of Global, Urban and Social Studies (GUSS), who come from a range of disciplinary backgrounds including, Anthropology, Political Science, Criminology and Social Work and International Studies. Through this collaboration, the researchers will highlight GUSS as leaders in this field. Moreover, the authors also have a wide range of experience, including early and mid-career research as well as senior scholars. This cooperation reinforces the formal and informal mentoring processes at GUSS. Global Security Reimagined: A Multi-Disciplinary Exploration is intended for academics, researchers and policymakers to further expand their thinking around security. It is also particularly aimed at undergraduate and post-graduate students studying security so they can gain a critical and holistic insight into (in)security from a variety of cross-disciplinary perspectives.

This book assesses the oversight regime in Afghanistan to identify and characterize the oversight failures, and then links them to specific negative strategic outcomes. Although there are high-quality analyses available about what went wrong in Afghanistan and why, few of them are grounded in scholarly research that uses empirical methods. This book fills that epistemological gap as well as provides a unique contribution to the body of literature, which does not contain any comprehensive studies of Afghanistan oversight. This type of study is important because certain characterizations of an oversight failure—e.g., Congress knowing that things were going badly in Afghanistan but choosing not to do anything about it—point to several pathologies about political control of the military and the incentive structures contained therein. Understanding and proactively managing these pathologies will be critical to improving strategic outcomes in future complex military interventions of the Afghanistan type.

The 21st century has been marked not simply by the proliferation of technologies that alter how we live and work, but by their increasing entanglement with core questions pertaining to security, conflict, and international governance. Indeed, the advent and maturation of novel technologies—from artificial intelligence (AI) and autonomous weapons to cyber capabilities and next-generation advancements in the context of quantum—are not merely transforming the tools of statecraft and international relations, they are reshaping the very ontologies of power, control, and strategic competition. As this book illustrates, the global security implications of these innovations—when co-opted or weaponized—are generating profound uncertainties in which they blur long-standing distinctions: between combatant and civilian, between precision and mass destruction, and between pre-emption and prevention. What has resulted is a complex, fast-evolving strategic landscape in which traditional international norms and institutions are struggling to comprehend—let alone regulate—threat-multiplying technologies. By critically engaging with both the enabling capacities and the disruptive potentials of technologies covered in chapters on AI, drones, lethal autonomous weapons systems (LAWS), cybersecurity and cyberwarfare, and quantum computing and the quantum internet, this volume aims to unpack the new dilemmas these tools pose to policymakers, strategists, legal and governance scholars, and civil society. It invites a reorientation of how global security communities can understand and engage with emerging technologies, moving beyond reactive measures through to proactive, anticipatory governance.
