This book offers an intermedial approach to truthful communication. Bringing together a wide range of media types and interactions from a transmedial perspective, the volume maps out how truth claims are made in different contexts, and how different media promise to create a truthful perception of the social world. The flexible communicative possibilities of digital technology have a significant impact on our perception of truth and truthfulness of communication. Bot accounts, deep fake videos, or AI technology draw attention to how reliable communication is destabilized and questioned. In this unstable climate, binaries such as true/false, authentic/fake and fiction/facts are difficult to apply. Instead, it is crucial to investigate how media products construct truthfulness in different ways. The volume brings together various media types and contexts such as press conferences, documentaries and mockumentaries, images in magazines and on social media, horror movies, biopics, and educational games and explores how truth claims, authenticity discourses, and knowledge communication are established and how they collide, merge, or are confused. This is an open access book.

This book examines truthfulness in transmedia practices, particularly in relation to scientific knowledge and the transmedial mediation of our perception of the world. In light of deepening environmental, political, and humanitarian crises, the role of transmedia storytelling in mainstream and social media is paramount. Harnessing such ideas as “ecomedia literacy”, the book looks at the development of new ecologies, which may be utopian or dystopian depending on our critical approach to texts. As such, it draws attention to how transmedia can be both potentially dangerous, but also instrumental in constructing positive attitudes, educating professionals, offering outlets to alternative sources of information and, by extension, promoting democracy.

This open access book explores the excesses, distortions and perverse effects that emerge when art and popular culture refuse reverence for nostalgic views on nature. Developing Phoebe Wagner's pioneering concept of the environmental grotesque, the book's authors argue that the problem is not ignorance of the crisis but rather poverty in our imaginative responses. Grotesque Anthropocene thus offers a needed rupture of our current ecological sensibilities, attending to the productive ambiguities of works across media, from art and literature to film and television.
