This innovative book examines the practicalities of conducting research in a busy accident and emergency department. Brian Dolan candidly describes the methodologies and research tools used in a pilot study looking at nurse practitioners? interactions with patients. The study also explores factors which restrict or restrain some formal research practice, for example the balance to be struck between maintaining good relations with research participants while observing the necessary distance required to produce quality research. Nurse practitioners, undergraduate and postgraduate students, along with those interested in research will find this real-world approach to undertaking research in practice settings both helpful and refreshing.

Pregnancy is a time when women need to be prepared mentally and physically to meet the challenges of childbirth and the transitions to parenthood. However, this needs to be within the realms of safe practice. The study on which this book is based is derived from the author's work as a midwife with a special interest in exercise. The main aims of the study were to investigate the effects of undertaking a regular exercise programme during and following pregnancy on psychological well-being, pregnancy and birth outcomes. Data were collected at three time points during and following pregnancy using a variety of outcome measures and were analysed using appropriate statistical testing. Conclusions were drawn indicating that women who participated in regular physical activity tended to have protection against reduction of psychological well-being as measured by a variety of psychological constructs.

Using findings from one study in particular, but including evidence from a wide range of studies over the past 10 years, Excessive Crying in Infancy addresses potential causes, suggested solutions, and parental response to this common, debilitating problem. Numerous examples and quotations from parents illustrate the book which offers crucial insights into the experience of parents as they struggle to cope with the chaotic disruption that affects every member of the household, desperately seeking a reason for the crying and a cure to end the misery. The positive effects of supportive interventions are highlighted, together with specific messages that may be important to enhance parents' ability to cope. The text will be of particular interest to health visitors and other community health care professionals who offer support and advise to parents in the home or in the clinic.
