Mr. Turbulent (1682) is an anonymous city comedy which starred popular comic actors and young actresses of great appeal. The play was produced in the immediate aftermath of the Exclusion Crisis. This first-ever critical edition offers a fully annotated modernized version of the text, together with an introduction that examines the contexts of the play. The editor also discusses at length such topics as the political dimension of the Moorfields setting and the green spaces of Restoration London. He examines as well the rethorical use of madness associated with the Bedlam hospital for the insane, the other pivotal cityscape setting in the comedy.

William Mountfort’s Greenwich Park (1691), produced in the aftermath of the Glorious Revolution, takes comic action to the green spaces east of London where urbane rakes court witty young ladies surrounded by a lively gallery including roistering citizens, an adulterous wife and a charismatic kept mistress. This first-ever critical edition offers a fully annotated modernized text, together with an introduction analysing the processes of evolution and transition articulated by this comedy on several, interrelated levels: from the old hard comedy of the 1670s to the new humane comedy of the early 1690s, from a glamorous view of debauchery and excess to the more sober morals promoted by William and Mary, and from the Town settings of Carolean comedy to the suburbs.

Mamamouchi, or The Citizen Turned Gentleman (1672) was Edward Ravenscroft’s playwriting debut. Its rambunctious comedy and star-studded ensemble earned him spectacular success with the London audiences, quickly turning him into one of the most relevant authors of his time. His unorthodox use of the source material, however, also garnered him the criticism of the literary elites, who accused him of plagiarism because of his adaptation of Molière. In this first-ever critical edition, a fully annotated and modernized version of the text is offered, together with an introduction that examines the social and cultural context in which the play came to exist. This edition looks at how Ravenscroft’s adaptative procedure navigates an environment in which key concepts such as nation-building or copyright law are starting to crystallize, and how this work contributed to further their development.

Feniza, or The Ingenious Maid, a free adaptation of Lope de Vega’s La discreta enamorada (1606), is one of several English plays from the Carolean period heavily influenced by Spanish comedias de capa y espada. Set in Madrid, this comedy follows the witty Feniza, who lives under the watchful eye of her outwardly pious aunt, Beliza. Feniza falls for the young cavalier Luzindo, but her plans take an unexpected turn when his father, Colonel Bernardo, asks for her hand. Long considered anonymous, Feniza is here attributed to George Digby, Second Earl of Bristol, based on new evidence presented by the editor. Preserved in a single manuscript (MS 583) held at the University of Chicago Library, this is the first-ever critical edition of Feniza. The edition offers a fully annotated text and an introduction that examines its Spanish source, its adaptation to the Carolean stage, the distinctive features of the Feniza manuscript, and the evidence supporting its attribution to Digby.

This work features many of the elements of Centlivre’s skillful playwriting that would later establish her as one of the most popular dramatists through to the nineteenth century. This critical edition offers a modernised text with annotations and an introduction that looks at the play in its social, historical, and dramatic context. Before the play begins, Clarinda and Colonel Manly have been courting for some time. Despite initially approving the match, Clarinda’s father Careful has now agreed to give her hand in marriage to the fop Sir William Mode. The play follows the couple’s attempts at outwitting both men as well as overcoming misunderstandings with the aid of Clarinda’s cousin Emilia, Manly’s friends Toper and Captain Bellmein along with the captain’s reformed mistress Mrs Plotwell.
