Priests, monks, burghers and peasants - how did they dress in the Nordic countries during the Middle Ages? What materials and colors were used? Which changes of fashion occurred?Knowledge of the medieval manner of dress must be drawn from visual and written records - art, provincial statutes and court findings, supplemented by the all too few examples of surviving textile material. Else Marie Gutarp presents a compilation of the extensive, albeit widely-scattered material - an invaluable guide for workshops, theater groups, organisers of medieval festivals and interested readers in general. The book also contains diagrammed cutting patterns for several simple medieval garments. Else Marie Gutarp is a qualified textile designer, who has specialised in the study of the medieval dress and fashions, mainly in connection with her assignment as head of the dressmaking workroom producing costumes for the Annual GotlandMedieval Week. The Annual Gotland Medieval Week is one of Northern Europe's largest living history events, which takes place in August every year. Activities are arranged all over the island of Gotland and in the World Heritage Town Visby.

Gotland is fascinating in many ways, not least due to its enormous wealth of fossils derived from the time when this part of the world was situated on more southerly latitudes near the Equator, and a tropical coral reef thrived in the area where the island is located today. Sara Eliason, palaeontologist at the County Museum of Gotland, describes and explains the most ancient history of the island and the life of the organisms whose remains form its present-day limestone rock. Drawing on her many years of experience as a leader of fossil rambles, she presents a lucid description of the sea floor environment of that time more than 400 million years ago, and of the places where fossils may now be found. Sunstones and catskulls are popular names for two common fossils found on the island.

Over a thousand years ago, in the period we call the Viking Age, a fourteen year old boy lived on the island of Gotland. His name was Torbjörn. He lived on a farm not far from the harbour at Vi on the west coast of the island. His parents Knut and Sigrid, his two younger sisters, his grandmother Astrid and an uncle called Ulf also lived on the farm. But his father wasnt there now, because one spring when Torbjörn was only nine years old his father had sailed away on his ship and hadnt been seen since then. Torbjörn missed his father, longed to snuggle in his fathers arms, listening to all his stories about the Viking expeditions in the East. Thus begins the exciting story of Torbjörn and his journey far, far away to the distant city of Bolghar to search for his father.
