This proceedings volume consists of contributed papers which deal with diverse topics ranging from logical questions to geometric methods and covering both integral group rings and group algebras. Some papers are research announcements, or of a descriptive nature, while others are research papers.

This book is concerned with the generalizations of Sylow theorems and the related topics of formations and the fitting of classes to locally finite groups. It also contains details of Sunkov's and Belyaev'ss results on locally finite groups with min-p for all primes p. This is the first time many of these topics have appeared in book form. The body of work here is fairly complete.

Motivated by applications in theoretical computer science, the theory of finite semigroups has emerged in recent years as an autonomous area of mathematics. It fruitfully combines methods, ideas and constructions from algebra, combinatorics, logic and topology. In simple terms, the theory aims at a classification of finite semigroups in certain classes called “pseudovarieties”. The classifying characteristics have both structural and syntactical aspects, the general connection between them being part of universal algebra. Besides providing a foundational study of the theory in the setting of arbitrary abstract finite algebras, this book stresses the syntactical approach to finite semigroups. This involves studying (relatively) free and profinite free semigroups and their presentations. The techniques used are illustrated in a systematic study of various operators on pseudovarieties of semigroups.

The Steinberg relations are the commutator relations which hold between elementary matrices in a special linear group. This book generalizes these sorts of relations. To encode these relations one needs a ring and a so-called linkage graph which specifies exactly which commutator relations hold. The groups obtained here, called linkage groups, have an enormous number of interesting images, finite and infinite. Among these images are, for example, 25 of the 26 finite sporadic simple groups. The book deals with the structure and classification of linkage groups. Part of the work involves theoretical group combinatorics and the other part involves computer calculations to study the linkage structure of various interesting groups. The book will be of value to researchers and graduate students in combinatorial and computational group theory.

This book is concerned with the structure of linear semigroups, that is, subsemigroups of the multiplicative semigroup Mn(K) of n × n matrices over a field K (or, more generally, skew linear semigroups — if K is allowed to be a division ring) and its applications to certain problems on associative algebras, semigroups and linear representations. It is motivated by several recent developments in the area of linear semigroups and their applications. It summarizes the state of knowledge in this area, presenting the results for the first time in a unified form. The book's point of departure is a structure theorem, which allows the use of powerful techniques of linear groups. Certain aspects of a combinatorial nature, connections with the theory of linear representations and applications to various problems on associative algebras are also discussed.

Recently the theory of partially ordered groups has been used by analysts, algebraists, topologists and model theorists. This book presents the most important results and topics in the theory with proofs that rely on (and interplay with) other areas of mathematics. It concludes with a list of some unsolved problems for the reader to tackle. In stressing both the special techniques of the discipline and the overlap with other areas of pure mathematics, the book should be of interest to a wide audience in diverse areas of mathematics.

This book provides an introduction to the algebraic theory of semirings and, in this context, to basic algebraic concepts as e.g. semigroups, lattices and rings. It includes an algebraic theory of infinite sums as well as a detailed treatment of several applications in theoretical computer science. Complete proofs, various examples and exercises (some of them with solutions) make the book suitable for self-study. On the other hand, a more experienced reader who looks for information about the most common concepts and results on semirings will find cross-references throughout the book, a comprehensive bibliography and various hints to it.

This book contains the definitions of several ring constructions used in various applications. The concept of a groupoid-graded ring includes many of these constructions as special cases and makes it possible to unify the exposition. Recent research results on groupoid-graded rings and more specialized constructions are presented. In addition, there is a chapter containing open problems currently considered in the literature.Ring Constructions and Applications can serve as an excellent introduction for graduate students to many ring constructions as well as to essential basic concepts of group, semigroup and ring theories used in proofs.

The influence of different gomomorphic images on the structure of a group is one of the most important and natural problems of group theory. The problem of describing a group with all its gomomorphic images known, i.e. reconstructing the whole thing using its reflections, seems especially natural and promising. This theme has a history that is almost a half-century long. The authors of this book present well-established results as well as newer, contemporary achievements in this area from the common integral point of view. This view is based on the implementation of module theory for solving group problems. Evidently, this approach requires investigation of some specific types of modules: infinite simple modules and just infinite modules (note that every infinite noetherian module has either an infinite simple factor-module or a just infinite factor-module). This book will therefore be useful for group theorists as well as ring and module theorists. Also, the level, style, and presentation make the book easily accessible to graduate students.

The present monograph on matrix partial orders, the first on this topic, makes a unique presentation of many partial orders on matrices that have fascinated mathematicians for their beauty and applied scientists for their wide-ranging application potential. Except for the Löwner order, the partial orders considered are relatively new and came into being in the late 1970s. After a detailed introduction to generalized inverses and decompositions, the three basic partial orders — namely, the minus, the sharp and the star — and the corresponding one-sided orders are presented using various generalized inverses. The authors then give a unified theory of all these partial orders as well as study the parallel sums and shorted matrices, the latter being studied at great length. Partial orders of modified matrices are a new addition. Finally, applications are given in statistics and electrical network theory.∗Deceased
