This book presents applications to several fluid dynamics problems in both the bounded and unbounded domains in the framework of the discrete velocity models of kinetic theory. The proposition of new models for dense gases, gases with multi-components, and gases with chemical reactions are also included. This is an up-to-date book on the applications of the discrete Boltzmann equation.

Recent developments of discrete methods of fluid dynamics, particularly the two most relevant aspects: the “half” discrete case — discrete Boltzmann equation; and the “totally” discrete one — lattice gas were discussed. Both the conceptual and numerical significance of these discrete models were covered as well as the mathematical problems which arise from them. This Colloquium is the third of a series initiated in Santa Fe (USA 1986) the second having taken place in Torino (Italy 1988).

This book deals with neutral particle flow in a stochastic mixture consisting of two or more immiscible fluids. After giving an introduction to linear kinetic theory and particle transport in a nonstochastic setting, it discusses recent formulations for particle flow through a background material whose properties are only known in a statistical sense. The mixing descriptions considered are both Markovian and renewal statistics. Various models and exact results are presented for the ensemble average of the intensity in such stochastic mixtures. In the Markovian case, the underlying kinetic description is the integro-differential transport equation, whereas for renewal statistics the natural starting point is the purely integral formulation of transport theory.

This book deals with aspects of thermodynamic restrictions in modern continuum mechanics and with particular problems of the kinetic theory and statistical mechanics. It stresses the interplay between statistical and phenomenological modelling of physical phenomena including homogenization techniques for media with microstructure. Diverse approaches to either derivation or justification of macroscopic models by microscopic theories are presented. From the kinetic theory, the problem of existence of solutions to the Boltzmann equation and particular solutions to the discrete velocity models are also considered. The book includes papers concerning viscoelasticity treated within the framework of both rational and extended thermodynamics. Phenomenological theories of hyperbolic heat conduction in solids and fluids are also discussed.

The book presents the theory of latticed shells as continual systems and describes its applications. It analyses the problems of statics, stability and dynamics. Generally, a classical rod deformation theory is applied. However, in some instances, more precise theories which particularly consider geometrical and physical nonlinearity are employed. A new effective method for solving general boundary value problems and its application for numerical and analytical solutions of mathematical physics and reticulated shell theory problems is described. A new method of solving the shell theory's nonlinear problems, substantially simplifying the existing algorithms is given. Questions of optimum design are discussed. Some of the findings are generalized and extended to edged and composite systems. The results of the solutions of a wide range of pressing problems are presented.

The book is devoted to the questions of the long-time behavior of solutions for evolution equations, connected with kinetic models in statistical physics. There is a wide variety of problems where such models are used to obtain reasonable physical as well as numerical results (Fluid Mechanics, Gas Dynamics, Plasma Physics, Nuclear Physics, Turbulence Theory etc.). The classical examples provide the nonlinear Boltzmann equation. Investigation of the long-time behavior of the solutions for the Boltzmann equation gives an approach to the nonlinear fluid dynamic equations. From the viewpoint of dynamical systems, the fluid dynamic equations arise in the theory as a tool to describe an attractor of the kinetic equation.

This book is a simple and concise introduction to the theory of semigroups and evolution equations, both in the linear and in the semilinear case. The subject is presented by a discussion of two standard boundary value problems (from particle transport theory and from population theory), and by showing how such problems can be rewritten as evolution problems in suitable Banach spaces.Each section of the book is completed by some notes, where the relevant notions of functional analysis are explained. Some other definitions and theorems of functional analysis are discussed in the Appendices (so that the only prerequisites to read the book are classical differential and integral calculus).

The subject of this book is time, one of the small number of elusive essences of the world, unsubdued by human will. The three global problems of natural science, those of the origin of the Universe, life and consciousness, cannot be solved without finding out the nature of time. Without a good construction of time it is impossible to describe, to qualify, to forecast and to control various processes in the animate and inanimate nature. Special attention is paid to the ways of adequate inclusion of the properties of time in the derivation of the fundamental equations of motion for natural systems.

The complex processes of state changes can be interpreted by resorting to Statistical Quantum Mechanics. However, it is well known that a phenomenological description of state changes can be obtained by using the classical continuum theory. This book supplies a panoramic picture of known and new mathematical models which are suitable to describe phase changes from a macroscopic view point. All these models are derived from the theory of continuous systems with a nonmaterial interface and allow to describe processes of solidification, melting, and vaporization. The nonlocal continuum theory of systems with a non material interface provides a more complex mathematical model in dealing with crystal growth either in a pure melt or in a mixture. A chapter is devoted to the analysis of phase changes in ferroelectric and ferromagnetic crystals.

Although Padé presented his fundamental paper at the end of the last century, the studies on Padé's approximants only became significant in the second part of this century.Padé procedure is related to the theory of continued fractions, and some convergence theorems can be expressed only in terms of continued fractions. Further, Padé approximants have some advantages of practical applicability with respect to the continued-fraction theory. Moreover, as Chisholm notes, a given power series determines a set of approximants which are usually unique, whereas there are many ways of writing an associated continued fraction.The principal advantage of Padé approximants with respect to the generating Taylor series is that they provide an extension beyond the interval of convergence of the series.Padé approximants can be applied in many parts of fluid-dynamics, both in steady and in nonsteady flows, both in incompressible and in compressible regimes.This book is divided into four parts. The first one deals with the properties of the Padé approximants that are useful for the applications and illustrates, with the aid of diagrams and tables, the effectiveness of this technique in the field of applied mathematics. The second part recalls the basic equations of fluid-dynamics (those associated with the names of Navier-Stokes, Euler and Prandtl) and gives a quick derivation of them from the general balance equation. The third shows eight examples of the application of Padé approximants to steady flows, also taking into account the influence of the coupling of heat conduction in the body along which a fluid flows with conduction and convection in the fluid itself. The fourth part considers two examples of the application of Padé approximants to unsteady flows.

This book is devoted to impulsive differential equations with a small parameter. It consists of three chapters. Chapter One serves as an introduction. In Chapter Two, regularly perturbed impulsive differential equations are considered. Modifications of the method of small parameter, the averaging method, and the method of integral manifolds are proposed. In Chapter Three, singularly perturbed differential equations are considered. A modification of the method of boundary functions is proposed, and asymptotic expansions along the powers of the small parameters of the solutions of the initial value problem, the periodic problem, and some boundary value problems are found. Numerous nonstandard applications to the theory of optimal control are made. The application of some other methods to impulsive singularly perturbed equations is illustrated, such as the numerical-analytical method for finding periodic solutions, the method of differential inequalities and the averaging method.The book is written clearly, strictly, and understandably. This book presents a unified treatment of the mechanics of mixtures of several constituents within the context of continuum mechanics. After an introduction to the basic theory in the first few chapters, the book deals with a detailed exposition of the mechanics of a mixture of a fluid and an elastic solid, which is either isotropic or anisotropic and is capable of undergoing large deformations. Issues regarding the specification of boundary conditions for mixtures are discussed in detail and several boundary value and initial-boundary value problems are solved. The status of some special theories like those of Darcy and Biot are discussed. Such a study has relevance to several technologically significant problems in geomechanics, biomechanics, diffusion of contaminants and the swelling and absorption of fluids in polymers and polymer composites, to mention a few.

This book is an exposition of a new approach to the Navier-Stokes equations, using powerful techniques provided by nonstandard analysis, as developed by the authors. The topics studied include the existence and uniqueness of weak solutions, statistical solutions and the solution of general stochastic equations.The authors provide a self-contained introduction to nonstandard analysis, designed with applied mathematicians in mind and concentrated specifically on techniques applicable to the Navier-Stokes equations. The interaction of the environment with a moving body is called “localized” if it has been found or assumed that the force or/and thermal influence of the environment on each body surface point is independent and can be determined by the local geometrical and kinematical characteristics of this point as well as by the parameters of the environment and body—environment interactions which are the same for the whole surface of contact.Such models are widespread in aerodynamics and gas dynamics, covering supersonic and hypersonic flows, and rarefied gas flows. They describe the influence of light on a body, and are used for modelling penetration of solids into metals and soils, etc.Localized Interaction Theory (LIT) studies various theoretical and applied problems using the most general description of the influence of the environment on the body. This makes it possible to integrate results obtained from different models and to create new universal methods that can be used for various conditions, even if the description of the real interaction model is unknown. Such a unified approach to the problems of analysis, calculation and optimization of the integral characteristics of bodies moving in different media is the main content of this book which is the first monograph on this subject. Many applications, chiefly in aerodynamics and space engineering are presented.

This is an analysis of multidimensional nonlinear dissipative Hamiltonian dynamical systems subjected to parametric and external stochastic excitations by the Fokker-Planck equation method.The author answers three types of questions concerning this area. First, what probabilistic tools are necessary for constructing a stochastic model and deriving the FKP equation for nonlinear stochastic dynamical systems? Secondly, what are the main results concerning the existence and uniqueness of an invariant measure and its associated stationary response? Finally, what is the class of multidimensional dynamical systems that have an explicit invariant measure and what are the fundamental examples for applications?

This workshop should interest researchers and others involved with high-precision measurements and the development of mathematical tools for this purpose. Advances in metrology depend on improvements in scientific and technical knowledge, the quality of instruments, a better use of advanced mathematical tools and the development of new ones. A tradition of close co-operation between metrologists and mathematicians, while found elsewhere, is lacking in Italy. This workshop wishes to start such a co-operation by providing a common meeting ground. Several industrial sectors, particularly those of instrumentation and software, are likely to benefit from this process, since metrology has a high impact on the overall quality of industrial products and applied mathematics is becoming increasingly important in industrial processes.

The main purpose of this book is to provide a self-contained, complete and geometrically clear presentation of the recent results on global controllability and stabilization. It contains many pictures and exercises so as to develop a geometrical control intuition and inspire the reader to think independently.
